Today is is the anniversary of one of the main reasons Bryce Petty was still available in the 4th round.
People forget that at the end of the 2013 NCAA season the big conversation was, who was going to be the first pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
Jameis Winston, Bryce Petty, or Marcus Mariota. Petty had a sensational 2013 season. 4200 yards, 32 TD's and 3 interceptions, for a 184.5 rate. Plus he had 14 rushing TD's. Baylor won it's first big 12 Championship. Not to shabby.
Petty looked like a lock 1st round pick, if not the first pick in the draft.
2014 wasn't so kind to Petty. In the opening game, a 45-0 thumping of SMU Petty injured his back. An MRI showed he had 2 cracks in the Tranverse Process of his Spine. It wasn't a long term debilitating injury, but it lingered all season, and caused a lot of pain in his throwing motion. Petty later described it as "Every time I went to throw, it would jolt. It was like somebody was punching me in the side." He missed one game, and played all year with it.
Petty still had a good season, 3855 yards, 29 TD's and 7 interceptions for a 157.8 rate. Good numbers, but he just didn't make the step up every one was expecting. When you watched him play, at certain points in the game it was just clear he was in pain, and not the same player he was in 2013.
When Senior Bowl week came, most people had him as a late 1st, or 2nd round pick. Petty had never played in a Pro style offense, or taken a snap from under center.
During the week he was very awkward. Over thinking what his responsibilities were, he was getting very mixed reviews from scouts. They were complimenting his big arm, and super fast quick release, but ripping him on his ability to play in a pro system in the near future. On game day he put up pedestrian numbers, and just didn't look natural out there.
The general consensus was he had a big arm, Could be a starter in the NFL, but needed a lot of time on the bench. He fell to the 4th round. Rough Senior Bowl for Bryce. He came into the season as perhaps a top 5 pick, came out of the Senior Bowl as a 4th round pick.
In the first preseason game against the Lions, he looked like what he was. A QB who was playing under center for the first time. He didn't embarrass himself, but he looked tentative, and unsure. Second game against the Falcons, he looked like a new guy. Got most of the reps in the game Seemed very confident. Very little signs that he was very new to the Pro Set. Showed off his big arm, and quick release. Nice accuracy. A LOT of hope for the future. He looked like an NFL QB. Can't wait to see where he has progressed to this summer. No he is not going to beat Fitz out for starter. There will be no QB competition this summer. It will be real nice if Petty can show that he can play in the league if Fitz goes down. I feel very confident he will. (I hope
If it wasn't for a bad Senior Bowl week, Petty would have been long gone before the 4th. Perhaps things broke right for the Jets for once and they got an early 1st round talent in the 4th.
