You have your opinion, I have mine, neither affects mac.

I would say from rumblings I've heard since this new management team arrived, is that they are reluctant with geno. Even in the pre season town hall, the Jets featured Fitz firing up his team prominently in their video to start the event.

If they aren't confident he's their future, trading him now may get a pick in a draft where we only have 6. Releasing him next year would be a waste of an opportunity to get something for him.

We will see soon enough what the team does.

Well, if another teams calls the Jets and offers a draft pick for Geno, then of course they would and should listen. I just don't believe all the stuff about the coaching staff and the players wanting to get rid of Geno. Remember that he was the assigned starter in TC. Yes they brought in Fitz as insurance just in case (and good thing they did), but it was Geno's job to lose. Who knows if Geno would've played as well as Fitz, but he would've finally been throwing to 2 legit stud NFL receivers.

Honestly I feel very good about the Jets QB situation and have faith in all 3 of them.

agreed..

what could possibly make anyone believe jets management & smith's teammates want to get rid of him..

hopefully bowles comes to his senses & gives smith back his starting job & re-signs fitzpatrick as insurance..

smith would have eventually lost the job to fitz anyway............just because your headcoach says your the starter in tc because the other guy had a major injury he was coming back from and the other QB was just drafted did not mean they believed he was good. It's called lack of options.

One should never use the two words "smith" and "good" in the same paragraph. They are antonyms

Agree.

Right up until the final cuts the Jets weren't sure Fitz would be able to play. That's why they brought both Matt Flynn, and Josh Jonhson in a few weeks before the season started. Both played fairly well the final pre-season game, and then they were both released. At that point I think the FO/CS decided Petty had come along far enough to back up for a few weeks.

As far as Smith being named the starter goes, in the beginning of camp Bowles was playing the faux QB competition game. He didn't want it to be released that they had signed a QB to replace Smith, who probably wasn't going to be ready opening day. Gailey, who knew Fitz very well, and knew he was a better QB then Smith wasn't having any part of it. He didn't want to look like the idiot who choose Smith over Fitz, so he blew the whistle that it was a rigged competition.

Bowles had to do some spinning at the time

All camp reports at the time were stating how Smith looked better than Fitz all training camp. Honestly, i think Smith may have started to play better butit was way too early. Fitz was injured and didnt have any chemistry at the time.

Meh

Early camp, Fitz was still injured, Smith opened up not throwing an interception in like 10 days. Every one was making a big deal about it. Fitz had only thrown one pick at the time.

Practice, when no body can hit you was never the problem for smith. It's when the red jerseys come off and people are trying to hit him that he totally panics.

You're absolutely right. It took us only a few minutes to realize that Geno was the same old Geno when he came in for Fitz in Oakland. The entire team looked bad that day but he was reverting to his old tricks. Moving backwards when pressured, losing valuable yard by not throwing the ball away. It's his awareness that is the problem.

Regardless, I have moved on from Smith. It doesn't matter to me if he's on the team or not. I am all in with Fitz for 2016. If Smith is better than Petty as the back-up, so be it. I am not losing sleep over Petty's development. I want him to succeed but it can be a long shot. How many fourth rounders in this league have been franchise qbs? The majority of those guys are found in Round 1.

100% agree FL.. smith is not without talent, so he can/does shine when he knows he won't get hit..

sadly (for him at least) he believed the same applied to dealing with enemkpali..

no doubt about it E..

still, there were some extenuating circumstances that dropped petty from potentially being a 1st round pick.. hell, if he entered the draft as a junior from what i read he probably would have been a 1st rounder.. plus, front offices/head coaches tend to be attached at the hip to QB's they picked in round 1..

I believe petty just might be the exception to the rule.. fitzpatrick certainly seems to believe so.. at least from what we have read/heard..

I know this doesn't fit the preferred Geno narrative for you guys, but this is what Woody Johnson had to say the other day. Please note what he says the coaches have told him about Geno and how he handled the situation this year:

As for the punching incident itself, Johnson said, "It's one of those things that you never like to have that kind of violence happen in the locker room. I think we dealt with it. I think Todd's instincts were correct, and everything that Todd said about it to you guys [reporters], I thought pretty much left me no reason to say anything.

"[Bowles] got rid of the player immediately. Geno had a pretty good year. We'll see in the summer how he's developed, but I think the coaches are pretty optimistic about what he's learned, his maturity. We know he can throw a ball. I think he's taken it to a new level, and we'll see how that plays out."

Can Smith still be the Jets' franchise quarterback? Johnson dodged the question.

"That's up to the eye of the beholder, but he has all the skills," Johnson said. "It's a question of what his desire is, and from what the coaches told me and what I've seen myself, I think he's matured a lot. He knows he's a professional. He has the ability to do it, if he sticks with it."

OK, from a guy who would trade smith for a bag of rocks, what about johnson's comments should make me think smith isn't a dead jet walking??

Woody's just trying to get smith's value up to your lofty expectations

"We feel ability-wise, he can definitely be a quality No. 2 backup and the rest is kind of up to him. He has the physical ability to potentially be a starting-caliber quarterback, but he still has to go out there and do it on the field in preseason and kind of see where he’s at. But we're very excited about working with him"

These guys are doing some spinning - they're virtually in sync. Backup QBs status message 1.0: DEPLOYED.

"He has the physical ability..." "He has all the skills..."

"The rest is kind of up to him..." "It's a question of what his desire is"

I guess you can look at it from both sides: a) Geno has a chance to be ok and since he is cheap, experienced and has some ability coupled with Fitz's durability issues, we'll hold on to him until something better comes along; or b) he sucks, is a selfish brat and is not a leader, but has shown enough that we might be able to get that bag of rocks for him if we sing his praises in unison.
I'm inclined to think it is not so cut and dried, and more like a combination of the two. In other words, Geno is available if someone will part with a draft pick, but does provide some insurance that Petty is not ready to be a #2 next year. All bets are off if MM spends a premium pick on a QB.
