You are right, it means little or nothing, but it would be absolutely great to finally climb out of the QB abyss we have been in for decades if you don't count Vinny great 98 season and Favres 3/4 of a season in 2008 before he tore that bicep or pec or whichever muscle it was.

Two small temporary ascensions only to fall back into a bottomless pit

If they draft Mariota that would be great but drafting a QB in the first round at 6 especially, I would expect to be ready to start from draft day and beat out both Fitz and Geno this year. Maybe I'm wrong but I just don't think he can do that. So if he can't then he is a developmental QB like Geno was coming out. As Geno should have sat his rookie year but didn't have that luxury and was forced out there with a garbage team and even worse coaching and management. With that said, this isn't the 60's through the 80's where first round QBs were expected to ride the bench for awhile and its ok. This is a time of first rounders being expected to be ready to go and hold their own and if Mariota cant do that, its a risk pick to me. You never know when he will be ready than.

I feel that has been the popular pick from the beginning. You dont feel 75% of mocks have us getting Mariota?

Yeah your right, we wont get him at 6. We will have to trade up to get him which will make it even worse. If he aint ready go after we traded up to get his ass, I would be pissed but I guess thats just me.

We have the luxury right now with Fitz and Geno to take a QB and let him sit, learn, and develop properly. This regime mentioned that they would be aggressive towards building a team to win now and building a team for the future. I would think a major key to building a team for the future would be having a QB who can lead this franchise years down the road. If we develop Mariota properly and he excels and succeeds in this league then it doesn't matter that he sat for a year. We would now have our QB for the next decade plus. No QB is perfect coming out but you need to take a chance on someone at some point. Why not Mariota?

People mocking him to us are indirectly predicting we go get him. It is probably between us, cleveland, rams, and chargers and I'm guessing most believe T I tans don't want to trade lower than the Jets pick.

Do you really think Mariota will do that? He may but he has to sit a year to learn the ropes. I don't want to repeat he mistakes of Geno's development.

I think he's a hard worker and very smart, scoring 33 on his wonderlic...

Watch the progress he's made in this combine tape. Kurt Warner talks about footwork being more about how a QB shifts his weight during the 3 step drop. First you plant, shift your weight to the front foot, and follow throw on your throwing motion (i.e. shifting weight onto your front foot as you plant and then step and release). Watch Mariota at the combine and see how his feet transition quickly into a 3 step drop, he plants, and releases. He has made a ton of progress:

His throwing motion in college wasn't as short and compact. See below he has a longer throwing motion that isn't as tight and confined as we saw at the combine:

I like that he is refining his game...but as Pointdexter is quick to point out, one thing we haven't seen him do is throw WRs open by seeing the windows before they are open. There is nothing we can do to know if he will make that transition...but if his improved mechanics and high wonderlic score tell us anything, he's a dedicated worker and very smart...and would be coming to a Jets team running a version of the spread offense with 2 great WRs, a good TE and #3 WR, and likely outstanding run game with Ivory, Powell, and Ridley...a lot of tools for him to grow into the man.

I have my doubts about mariota, there is a lot of Geno in his game and weaknesses, but he seems to have a work ethic and the brains to be successful. Does it make me feel any better that we dont have one of next year's NFL ready QBs (I really like next year's QB draft class, especially Cook and Hackenberg) in our top 10 pick's sights? No. But I think he's a kid that is easy to get behind and root for.

All 4 of the cbs.sports guys now has Mariota mocked to the Jets.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/mock-draft

3 of those 4 mocks have us taking mariota at 6, and only 1 has us trading up (but to 4). i don't see anyway mariota slips to 6, and it's highly likely he doesn't make it out of the top 2. now i'll grant pre-draft rumors should all be taken with a giant grain on salt, but we have rumors of teams like san diego and chicago offering veteran QBs (rivers and cutler) plus picks to move up to get him. i just don't see him lasting till 6, or even 4. if we want him, we probably need to move up to 2 to get him.

I'm on board with Mariota for the reasons Sup55 mentioned above. I will only be disappointed if we leave this draft without one of Winston, Mariota, or Petty. The rest of the class is garbage, I think.

Hundley is a long term project in the mold of EJ Manuel. Grayson has some intriguing skills but he's not someone who wows you in any way.

I think JW, MM, and Petty all have potential to be starters in this league and hopefully one of those 3 will be Jets come May.

It's all just conjecture at this point but there are whispers now that Tampa may take Mariota #1 overall.

My serious opinion is this, Elias

There is no comparison between the two. Marcus Mariota has shown at Oregon that he has the consummate skills to be a potentially elite NFL QB. While Mariota led his team to the National Championship game, defeating Winston and FSU in the process, Smith was an embarrassment of major proportion in the thirteenth rate Pinstripe bowl.

I think he and Winston will go.1 and 2 in this draft, making this discussion moot but if Mariota is available at 6, I would do cartwheels because the Jets would finally have a franchise QB.

Ryan Fitzpatrick gives us the chance to let the kid learn and develop for a short time too while improving the play at QB while he holds the fort

This would be a dream pick for this team and might even let us finally forget all our QB stumbles and bumbles since passing on Dan Marino in 1983

Thanks. Fair point and I can understand your rationale. I am a Jets fan first. Don't give a crap about who the coach is, who the players are as long as we win!

If Mariota is the guy then I hope we give him all the tools to succeed. I think we are almost there. He has WRs and TE, RBs. Just need to strengthen that line.

He was? You mean the game he played in the snow and completed 68% for 2 TDs and 0 INTs? That game?

Fans often let their bias get in the way of the facts. He was far superior to Nassib in every way in that game and it was WVU's run defense, with over 370 rushing yards given up, that "was an embarrassment of major proportion."

but again, dont let the facts get in the way of a good "I hate Geno" rant...

In that game it was the run defense fault.

For two seasons of failure it was the OCS fault, the no weapons fault, the people who invented time zones fault, the offensive lines fault.

It's always everybody but poor Geno's fault.

Face the facts, statz 55.

NOT AN NFL QB AND NEVER WILL BE ONE.

Thank God we at least have Fitzpatrick to take over and end our long nightmare of QB ineptitude

Let's hope both QB's go 1-2. If so, one of the blue chips will slip to #6 either giving the Jets a real franchise player or making that pick that much more valuable for a trade

Its not about me facing the facts...its about me not making it up as we go. You said he was horrible in that game...it was Nassib who completed 11-28 130 yards and 2 turnovers...it was Geno 19 for 28, 200 yards, 2 TDs, and 0 turnovers....

Its one thing to say you dont like Geno, but blaming him for the Titanic sinking is a bit stupid, so I just need to point out when your tirades include made-up things.

Geno didnt stink in that bad weather game, he was actually pretty good considering the conditions, and evidence by how his counterpart played (who was used to playing in bad weather since he's from upstate New York)....

Just so you know, Geno didn't lead the Nazis either before you blame him for that too...
