Plenty? How many the last 20 years were not won by Wilson, Rodgers, Brady (cheats), Eli (luck and defense), Manning, Brees, flacco, and Big Ben (refs gave him big breaks)?

and all those QB's you mentioned had good teams backing them up on defense and offense. I would say Brees was the only one that carried his team.

...seriously? They're all top QBs in the NFL.

You're talking about spending all day building a team/car and never getting your driver. So you have a beautiful car in the shed with no driver that gets old and falls apart. Without a driver, you got nothing...and we don't have a drivers

Petty may be that guy, but like Mettenberger last year, that should t stop us from bringing in another young stud next year and seeing who beats out who.

Mariota is crushing Mettenberger and will start week 1. I have a feeling of we come or of rd1 with a QB, we will have a similar story here with our rd 1 QB crushing petty and starting week 1 and becoming an organization on the rise, not an 8-8 target annually like you're proposing.

I'll believe it when I see it. This guy was supposed to be all the rave and instead he was terrible. There has to be a reason for that and the article doesn't say what that might be. Ron Pawlus was supposed to be all that, instead he never even got a whiff from the NFL, did he? There are a million other stories just like his.

You are what you become. Heaps was great in high school and horrible in college. If he couldn't play in college, odds are he's nothing in the pros as well.

well fine if you want to use a car analogy you have drivers that can drive a car no matter the set-up like earnhart, jimmie johnson, and tim richmond. Then you have drivers like matt kenseth, earnhart jr, and rusty wallace who can really drive a good car. Then you have guys like mike waltrip, derrick cope, and sterling marlin who all were good enough to win the daytona 500 as long as they had the right car the right set-up and got some breaks during the race.

point is we don't need to mortgage our future to win in this league.

Yes everyone wants a franchise QB but I trust mac, gailey, and bowles in that regards.

oh in that analogy fitzpatrick would be in the second group just needing a little help from the rest of the teams units, while geno may need a 00' ravens type team backing him up.

Can we see how this season goes before deciding whether or not we need a QB. I am not a believer in Geno, but I am willing to see what he can do this season - as long as he is on a short leash. We still have 16 games to play, 20 including preseason, to figure out what we have.

I have no problem seeing how things play out this season but to be honest in my mind I always have QB on the table until I have a top 5 QB in my huddle.

I don't disagree. But all this talk of ransoming the future to move up for a QB in the draft when we have no idea how our season is going to play out, where we will be picking in the draft, how all of these college QBs will look just seems kind of silly right now. And I am as big a draft nut as anyone.

Then again, it is the dead time of the offseason between TC and minicamp, so I guess any topic is fair game.

I dont disagree with that. I think there may still be a 25% chance gaily can turn Geno around with these weapons...maybe make him a 12-25 rated QB, hovering around average. That may be good enough with this D but something that gives me heartburn every Sunday. Fitzpatrick may even come in and be able to not crash the Porsche. I do think the team has a 10 win ceiling and may hit that mark with how crazy good this defense will be (and so much depth on dline and DBs there's no reason to rush players back at 80% when you can give them a week off to get to 95% and still have a McDougle or Milliner step in at CB one week or Williams or Douzable on the dline and give Wilkerson/Richardson/Harrison extra time to heal).

I think it is in our best interest to get one of next year's QBs, but if we didn't send the farm and grabbed one of the best olineman rd 1 next year, and another rd 2-4 QB to eventually be in the mix for QB with Petty, I'd understand that direction too.

This administration is not trading 2 first rounders and a 2nd for anything less than the real deal can't miss. I think next year we go o line, cb, or wr. Depends on how this year goes. With Revis and cro on short term contracts (guaranteed money) and not knowing how Marshall performs at wr,is way too early to know.

And that's just common sense. An NFL organization cannot pick a QB, then invest the next 5 seasons trying to develop that one guy. It's important to add youth along the way to challenge the incumbent. NFL front offices do not last very long unless they can find that QB that will instantly make their team a contender.

This might be my biggest criticism of Rex. WHY did he never challenge Mark Sanchez with a good veteran? Why didn't Tanny or Rex ever draft another young QB to keep Mark Sanchez working?

I hope the team of Mac and Bowles realizes that QB on this team is totally unsettled. They need young talent on the roster at QB. I hope that until they find THEIR guy, they just keep running completely open QB competitions.

You keep adding talent and young guys and eventually one might be the next kurt warner.

personally i think all the numbers and scouting has some effect but in the end you never know how a player will respond.

Some NFL QB's have actually been better in pro's than they were in college.

Do you guys realize that the number of QBs the Jets have actually brought in over the last 5 years. However, for the most part we have been unable to develop anyone -- its been just one bad decision after another. Since 2011, we have drafted:

McElroy
Smith
Boyd
Petty

Brought in UDFAs Simms & now Heaps.

And acquired veterans Tebow, Vick, Garrard & Fitz.

That is 10 guys in 5 years and I may have missed 1 or 2. And I am not going to count Drew Stanton who spent 7 more days on the Jets roster than I did.

Hopefully the new guys will finally get it right, but for those saying you need to draft a new guy every year, we have been pretty much doing that. Gotta keep trying until they get it right, though.

Which is also why you don't put all your eggs in the Petty basket. There is a bigger chance he's a bust than pro bowler based On Where he went in the draft and where he's coming from...so rd 1-3 next year we should grab another QB to push for PT with Petty. Let Petty and another young QB push eachother towards greatness; and if neither show greatness next year, grab another one the following year. But we shouldnt operate under the assumption if Geno doesn't work petty will, because petty is traveling down the same path as Geno with the same obstacles. Maybe he overcomes them maybe not...

I agree -- although I think we will bring Petty along slowly whereas Geno was thrown into the fire before he was ready. There is no way we go into next season knowing if Petty can be a long term solution. On the other hand, we should know for sure about Geno -- probably by October. And if it is time to move on, then we absolutely should consider QB in the upcoming draft.

Its too early to draw conclusions, but there are quite a few QBs that could generate interest next spring -- beyond just Hackenberg and Cook. You have guys like Cardale Jones, Jared Goff, Cody Kessler, Dak Prescott, Gunner Kiel & Jeremy Johnson to name a few.

The difference is we had idiot rex who wouldn't know what a QB competition or what one even looks like if the perfect QB walked up and tapped him on the shoulder.

The Jets probably should draft a new guy every year. You're forgetting that the Jets already knew they weren't getting the answer for their QB spot when they traded/drafted for the above QB's.

The Jets have been developing TWO guys over the last 5 seasons - Sanchez and Smith.

They also never drafted or brought in any real competition for them. They just BELIEVED that their guy could get it done. They were so confident that in fact they brought in broken down slugs that were long shots to even so much as make the roster. That's not competition by a long shot.

What's great about this new regime is that they are all about letting the chips fall where they may and supporting the best guy. They also followed through in their beliefs about competition by signing that crafty veteran and the highly coveted young QB with good upside. They officially put Geno on notice that stupid, lackluster play will not be tolerated. He'd better start playing well or he'll be out the door and Mac and Bowles will not lose a seconds sleep about it.

They're here for the Jets team and to make them winners. PERIOD.

What about if the "Baylor guy" turns into the real thing, an elite QB when he competes with Fitzpatrick for the starting job in 16?
