FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Ask Sheldon Richardson what position he plays for the New York Jets, and this is what he'll tell you:

MPB7.

Sounds very James Bond-ish, right?

"It's multi-purpose box seven," Richardson said. "Any position you need me to play in the box seven, I can play."

i

Richardson usually plays defensive end or tackle, but he has been playing outside linebacker in recent weeks. In fact, he was in the starting lineup last week as an outside 'backer in the 3-4 base defense. You don't often see a 294-pound linebacker, but Richardson doesn't look out of place because of his freakish athleticism.

The idea gained momentum five weeks ago, when Quinton Coples was waived. The Jets had started playing more 4-3 fronts, getting Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson and Leonard Williams on the field at the same time, but Todd Bowles is an old 3-4 coach and he didn't want to junk the scheme entirely. Because rookie Lorenzo Mauldin isn't ready for an every-down role, Bowles decided to give Richardson a shot.

Richardson played 18 snaps at linebacker last week against the Patriots, bringing his total to 125 out of 533 defensive snaps, according to ESPN Stats and Information.

"We try to scheme and do certain things if we see certain things on the other side of the ball that we can take advantage of," Bowles said.

Richardson said he laughed upon learning of the linebacker idea, but he accepted the challenge. It wasn't easy at first because he continued to read plays as a 3-technique tackle, his natural position, not as a linebacker. The coaches backed him off, but he's back on the accelerated program.

"There's nothing to it," he said. "It's not an obstacle. Guys put limits on themselves. I put none on myself. Just give me my reps, and I should be fine by game day."

Richardson doesn't lack confidence. He believes he can play every position on defense except cornerback. Coming out of high school, he was the highest-rated tight end in the country. As a rookie, in 2013, he got a handful of plays as a goal-line running back, scoring two touchdowns. He's always one of the best athletes on the field, no matter what field he's on.
This is one of those situations where the player has to put aside his ego, and Richardson is doing that. Obviously, he'd rather be playing his natural position, but he understands the deal. Bowles wants to get the best 11 players on the field, and Richardson is most definitely among the best 11.

"I don't make as many plays," he said. "It's the dirty job on the defense. It's not flashy, but you get your chance to shine. I got one (sack against New England). We're winning. It is what it is.

"I could've complained about more 3-technique reps, but it's not necessary," Richardson continued. "It's not necessary at all. The team is flourishing right now and I'm a team guy. Anything they ask me to do, I do. It's working out right now."

Richardson said he gets teased by the defensive linemen. They say he's no longer one of them, and that he belongs to the linebacking corps. To counter that, he created the MPB7 label. It's unique, that's for sure.

"Whatever the team needs me to do, I'll do," he said. "If anything, it builds my résumé."

Funny part about this is, it's the exact same thing that Mario is going public criticizing Rex for in Buffalo.

I think more so he is just stating the obvious, he is open to whatever his career here or anywhere can be...

If he has to play linebacker, defensive lineman, even safety he will do it because he is trying to establish himself as a team player...

Maybe even Chan Gailey will take a play out of last years playbook and utilize him as a fullback...

Richardson knows there is a slim chance that Mo is gone, but if he is then what if Damon Harrison goes then his door is open to stay... Unlike Rex, Bowles and Rodgers don't need a 350 lb nose tackle in there defensive line to be successful... Mo, the Rookie, and Sheldon are all DE/DT versatile and they could be the trio moving forward if the Jets front office can not reach an agreement with Snacks...

Too many what ifs, right now to speculate but he is trying to shed the troublemaker persona and be more of a team guy...

if he is being sincere then great, for us for him for the Jets...

but if this is just so he can get his next payday and continue to be an immature prick then it becomes a sorry ass story of another good player that won't have a future in this league that is trying to clean up the trash...

there are so many chances one could have, as a fan I could care less if he stays or goes because the next great talent is waiting to take his job alla Leonard Williams...

I agree...

But, do I think there is a chance Damon Harrison could be gone, yes but we actually have football people in the front office that know losing Damon Harrison would be a huge gaff by this organization...

Damon Harrison, stated he grew up a Patriots fan and one never knows if there future they may play for their child hood team... Statement that cringed Jets nation, when he said it... But it is true, no body can determine where they will be just because this is a business with no certainties...

And, as for what move makes sense, it is yet to be determined just because there are no guarantees that the team will franchise Mo, or that Mo could walk in free agency... we will have to wait n see on this one but at the end of the day it is all about the team's locker room and leadership that will either help or hurt us with the near future of Sheldon and his childish ways...

Leonard Williams is at least here for another four years (3 more on rookie deal + team option), that is the only good thing we have going right now... All three of them could be gone this off season, just making that statement because just never know what may happen...

Do I want Sheldon Richardson with the team moving forward, no...
Do I see him turning out to be a great player, yes but not a great person... Too many issues from days at Missouri and these past years for him to all of sudden become a team player it seems odd... That statement wasn't much more than him trying to sell himself, then was it trying to admit his wrong doings...

So when you finish grinding your axe, are you going to swing it at Richardson? What a bunch of crap. Bowles is testing and refining what he can do with this young man, but you want to throw out the garbage by dumping the player. I think you need patience here.

so I can't state my opinion?

Sheldon Richardson from his days at Missouri has had issues, now they were public knowledge if you followed college football, he was added to the league's program for those issues when he entered... This kid has had so many chances to this point and has continued with his poor choices... I get it he is a troubled young man, so maybe we should blame the last regime for not reaching out to this kid and help him... But regardless he did it, not me... He has talent, but is he worth the trouble? I say no...

Shame on him
Shame on Jets
Shame on NFL

To keep allowing him to behave the way he has to this point, is horrible by all three above... He had one suspension this season and is more than likely going to be suspended beginning of next season... Yes he is young but there is a limit that a young man should be given chances to prove he has learned from those mistakes so to speak... Playing in the NFL is a privilege just like driver's license, yet people take advantage of those privileges...

Every player in the NFL has talent, some more than others but doesn't excuse them to break the rules, break the law or break the jaw...

There is so much to be patient about nowadays when were are loaded with talent, a bad apple sometimes is too rotten to keep... If he sticks around is because he is showing he can be better, but he just needs to do it NOT state he will be...

Some people don't realize that this isn't his first f-up, not even his second he has issues back to college days at Missouri... Some weren't global news but even so, how many times do you WestCoastOffensive feel enough is enough... Our team plays and resides in the NY-NJ area with probably the most absurd media market that is already against our team for being the Jets... Circus was here for awhile and now we are finally asserting ourselves as NO JOKE team/franchise with a respectable front office and coaching staff... I loved Rex & Company but there was a time and place for certain statements and most of time Rex didn't know when to shut the eff up...

I was all for the Jets to take Richardson with the 9th pick but was also open to the team taking if he slipped Milliner because the upside was there minus the durability issues... When we still got him at the 13th pick I felt it was a steal then and still do now, but he made a statement to the Jets then front office that his past won't be a problem moving forward, that he learned from his mistakes AND he also made a twitter declaration to the fans that he was going to be a player fans will love and respect, lmao now... Then last season happened, and it wasn't one issue there were a couple of things...

As a fan watching all the talent in the word being degraded by off the field issues is disheartening at the end of the day he isn't the only fish in the sea and if he is gone this off season so be it... If he sticks around then the Jets have a bargain tool to use when he seeks his extension in two years after the Jets pick up his option?

I don't believe Bowles will keep him around. Too much worry. But maybe #91 has successfully turned over a new leaf; he hasn't been in any other altercation since Missouri, isn't that right? So Coach will tell us with his actions; that's the feeling I get. Like you, I am okay with whatever that decision is.

poor judgment or clear stupidity?

His response after first incident
"I apologize for letting down my family, teammates, this organization and the fans," Richardson said in a statement after the suspension, per NFL.com 's Dan Hanzus. "However, words aren't enough. This is something that can only be addressed by how I handle myself from this point on. I don't want this to take away from what the team is trying to accomplish. While I won 't be there at the start of the regular season, I will do whatever I can to support my teammates until I 'm able to return to the field."

He also took to Twitter to apologize for the suspension:

Then this happened not too long after:

New York Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, already suspended four games to begin the 2015 season for failing a drug test because of marijuana use, made a promise to reporters at Jets training camp Thursday: He wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. An hour later, a police report alleged that the star defensive lineman had made a much bigger one. Charges officially were filed against Richardson in Missouri relating to a July 14 arrest, according to a police report obtained by the New York Post. Richardson allegedly was engaged in a street race, and was clocked at 143 mph by police, according to the Post. When police attempted to pull Richardson over, he allegedly accelerated and tried to avoid police, shutting his lights off and blowing several traffic lights in the process. Richardson eventually pulled into a driveway and allegedly reached for something between his feet, at which point officers ordered him — at gunpoint — to exit the vehicle, according to the report. Police later found a loaded gun under his seat. The vehicle also allegedly smelled of marijuana. Two adult male passengers and a 12-year-old boy were in the vehicle, but none of the other passengers were charged. Richardson was charged with a class A misdemeanor for resisting arrest, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail, according to the Post. He is scheduled to appear in court in Missouri on Oct. 27, two days following New York’s game against the New England Patriots. “I’m not a dope fiend, man,” Richardson told reporters earlier Thursday. “I can say no (to marijuana). I just chose not to. It was a depressing time in my offseason and that’s just that. It’s just that simple, bro.”

[TWEET]626885258655350784[/TWEET]
His response to this was:

Friday July 31st
"That was just one bad night," Richardson said, per Costello. "I thought it would be fun to show my family members something. They'd never been in a car like that before."

This is the case that has been delayed a few times this past month or so...

It's this shit that makes me sick, one dumb thing after another after he entered the league in was already in the NFL substance abuse program from testing positive during combine among incidents at Missouri for violating team rules...

These players have no mentors coming in the league and are given everything and these youngins just go hog wild like Richardson, but at some point enough is enough...

At the end of the day I am a Jets fan and will support all players on this team, but like when we had Mike Vick on the team I supported the football player but didn't have to like the person... I'm almost feeling the same for Sheldon...

I still remember my youth. I was a drunken loser through college. I should have died more then once driving drunk. Thank God I never hurt anyone else. I took 3 semesters off to calm down, then I went back, found my wife and totally changed my ways.

Sometimes I look at these young kids given millions of dollars and I wonder if I would have been just as dumb as them if I was given all that money and fame and that age. I would like to say I wouldn't have been like them but then I also wish I never acted like I did back then yet I still did. and I come from a middle class family where I never really wanted for anything. What if I was poor my whole life?

Richardson did some stupid crap, but , heck so did most of us. When I was 16, I had a 69 Firebird with a 350/300hp Vette engine. I drove too fast sometimes but other kids drove faster and more often. I ended up hitting some black ice with that Firebird one winter and took down a telephone pole that took my trunk into the middle of my backseat. Should have died they said.

So based on my stupidities in my youth I'm more inclined to give Richardson a little more slack. I think these guys really need someone to follow them around and teach them what not to do. Maybe something the NFL could supply, I don't know? after all they are still just dumb kids like we, or at least I, used to be. And I think I turned out ok after all is said and done. I have this uncontrolled hatred for teams that cheat but other then that I'm fairly normal:)

That said , if he screws up again, I'm off the bandwagon. unless of course he's caught taping signals or deflating balls. Those kind of bad things are perfectly legal in the eyes of the NFL and get you nothing but superbowl wins.

I'm not saying I condone any of this crap, just that I can understand these kids coming from nothing screwing up when they suddenly become rich and have no real guidance to keep them straight.
