Look at how this past draft went to fill holes on the roster they drafted day 3 safeties to convert to linebackers...
They gave a former first round pick a chance to show that his style can fit in the NFL in Jarrad Davis the possible replacement for CJ Mosley long term, if not they will draft another safety or two to do just that replace both of them...
On offense you don't need first round prospects at skill positions but you can strike get lucky or find first round talent that have slipped in the draft for various reasons... Some players are lifers with a team and some are in revolving door meaning trade chips after second or third year...
By doing all of this, yes the entire starting five of the OL can continue to get paid while key individuals on the DL can also reap the rewards of a fine contract... Some players like Bryce Huff a long shot to make an active 53 as a priority free agent the odds are stacked against him, but there are always players of that talent overlooked and their contracts are ridiculously affordable to a team with top heavy contracts in key positions...
That is why Joe Douglas loves day 3 draft picks it allows him to continue to build the team around what he believes is the core roster...
