Scouting the Opponent: New England Patriots

Pats’ Offense Keeps on Rolling, Defense Is Clamping Down

scouting-the-pats-art.jpg

Last Meeting
The Jets (4-10) and Patriots (12-2) squared off Week 12 at MetLife Stadium as New England emerged victorious 22-17.

Winning Streak
Tom Brady and the Pats are on a five-game winning streak and have won nine of their last ten contests. In Week 15, the Pats clinched the AFC East, taking down the defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos 16-3 at Mile High Stadium. New England currently sits atop the AFC and can clinch home field advantage in the playoffs with a win and an Oakland Raiders loss.

Offensive Efficiency
Since facing the Jets after Thanksgiving, Brady has completed an average of 62.5% of his passes for 287 yards with 4 TDs to three different receivers (one INT).

Pick Your Poison
The Patriots have three talented RBs who possess different skill sets. LaGarrette Blount is the bruiser of the bunch and has received the most work on the ground. Blount ranks No. 7 in the NFL with 1,060 yards on 265 carries and he leads the league with 15 rushing TDs, a Patriots single-season record.

The 5’10”, 205-pound James White lines up in the backfield, but is predominantly used as a pass catcher. White has the second-most receptions on the team with 53 (WR Julian Edelman) and has tallied 498 receiving yards. He’s also tied for second on the team with four receiving touchdowns. The Wisconsin product has only carried the ball 36 times this season for 143 yards and has yet to rush for a TD.

Since returning from an ACL injury Week 11, Dion Lewis has gradually become more involved in New England’s offense. Lewis registered his best output of the season against the Broncos, rushing for 95 yards on 18 carries. Last season, the Pitt product was a dual threat for the Patriots, recording 234 rushing yards and 288 receiving yards in seven games.

Against the Jets in Week 12, the Patriots predominantly used their backs as receivers — they combined for 56 yards on eight catches. On the ground, the three RBs rushed for 91 yards on 17 carries.

Tightening the ScrewsNew England’s defense has been very effective since these teams last met, surrendering an average of 12 points and 46 rushing yards in their last three games. Additionally, opponents have only converted on 21% of their third-down attempts over that same time span.

Replacing Rob
Four-time Pro Bowl TE Rob Gronkowski was placed on IR following the Jets-Patriots Week 12 matchup with a back injury. Martellus Bennett has taken over as New England’s starting tight end, registering 109 yards and a touchdown the past three games. Against the Jets, Bennett had three catches for 22 yards.

OC Says Pats D a Good Test for Petty, ST Coordinator Playing Chess with Injuries

In the beginning of the season, the Achilles heel for the defense was its susceptibility to big passing plays. The secondary tightened up since Week 5, only surrendering two plays of over 40 yards prior to Saturday’s 34-13 loss to the Dolphins. In the late stages of the first half, WR Kenny Stills found separation from rookie CB
Juston Burris for a 52-yard score. Defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers marvels at the opportunity to use this as a teaching point for the 23-year-old, who made his first NFL start against Miami.

“A lot of times we work to what the corner feels more comfortable with,” Rodgers said. “Burris for instance, we were in a cover zero. Usually we like to be off in that situation because we expect the ball to come out quickly, but he’s a better press guy. So he was kind of in between whether to be on or off. It’s a good thing to fix for him.”

One thing about
Bryce Petty is certain: He's one tough cookie physically. This week, his mental toughness will be tested as the second-year QB is gearing up for a Christmas Eve showdown against the Patriots in Foxborough, MA. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey stressed the importance of Petty’s film study, but also anticipates New England to show some new formations. Additionally, Gailey tagged them as the “smartest” defense the Jets will face this season.

“They have a lot of people that can interchange to other places,” he said. “They play a lot of different positions. You might find [Dont'a] Hightower at one spot one play and another spot the next play. That creates a challenge when you can have guys that can move around and come from different spots and move around to different spots.”

The Jets have dealt with a number of injuries on both sides of the ball over the course of the season, but special teams may have been impacted the most. ST coordinator Brant Boyer said 2016 has been his most challenging year in coaching because he’s been plugging new players in his system each week.

“It’s tough,” Boyer said. “I’m not going to lie to you, but that’s part of the profession. Guys that are in the building, on the practice squad, that were here in the spring and came back have been in the system. They’ve practiced the system. Guys that just got here two days ago, you show them what to do and you try to bring them along. You try to do it slowly and at the end of the day you don’t know if they can get it done in the first week or two. You try to do the best you can to prepare them and get them ready."

Oh boy, this should be fun.

For the first time in years, i may actually not watch the Jets game. I'm sure my wife will be thrilled. Now she can find something for me to do around the house.

Why this should be fun? It gives Petty a real chance to see what he has....forget the score look at the growth of some of the young players.

i expect Petty to have a rough game in a hostile environment. If he can somehow impress and walk out of there with a good game that shows growth and improvement, then maybe we can get a little excited...but only a little

16.5 point spread in my pool, I took the Pats to cover. If it was 24, I might've took the Jets.....maybe.

Perhaps the only silver lining. If Petty and some other young guys play well. But other than that, I expect a thrashing at the hands of the team I despise more than any other. I don't think I can bear to watch this potential train derailment.

Say we lose 65-21.

Then lose to Rex next weekend here at Metlife next week. Honestly, Woody may have to really consider.

Brady has all day. They are going to kill us because of our offense is getting three and outs. The defense will be gassed by the end of the first
