I get what you're saying, and there is nothing worse than being stuck in mediocrity - not good enough to compete, not bad enough to get the picks to rebuild. But in this case, if Petty shows development toward being a solid answer at QB, it is worth it.
now that you mention it, i did read it & agreed almost word for word..
personally, i don't ever see bowles becoming a leader of men..
he finally called out his defense for lack of effort in the colts game & one day later he retracts it..
even yesterday, when the refs didn't call a personal foul when petty got hit late going out of bounds right in front of him.. it almost looked like he had to force himself to barely let his feeling be known to the officials.. like he finds a public display of emotions distasteful..
too many really important things that make him a lousy HC aren't/won't be fixed over time.. my thoughts anyway..
The thing that really stood out to me on the negative side was the run defense. Carlos Hyde is a very good player, but that was stupid. He ripped off about 5-6 huge runs with nobody near him. Gilchrist had to catch up with him numerous times. I'll give Mainejet some credit here: Darron Lee admitted he stunk in that first half. He said it was bad angles and just inexcusable. He shouldered all of the blame for it. At least Lee played better in the 2nd half, and didn't dodge the blame.
Where was Wilkerson? Richardson? The rest of the defense? That was alarming.

I wouldn't say Lee and the defense were exactly "locked in" in the 2nd half? They still allowed Hyde 52 yards on just 10 carries. By any standard, that's a terrible half of defensive football. Were they improved? Yes, but certainly not "locked in".
The point is Darron Lee is not cut out to play inside. He's simply too small to take on a lead guard. In fact, they said those very words on SNY. Westhoff said (and I a agree), Lee is a specific player for the role of OLB in a 4-3. He's too small to be effectve in a 3-4. He's also limited to a part time role because the Jets play a 3-4 hybrid.
This is why the pick has never made any sense to me? Jets fans think it's a good use of all of the equity in the 20th overall pick to select essentially a part time player?? If the Jets had selected him in the 4th or 5th round I would have said good pick. Not so when you use a 1st rounder and in turn waste all of the equity in the pick?
And really what grieves me the most was Mac should have selected an OL because that was necessity. Picking a part time player and an experimental QB does not help this team at all in 2016. That is probably the biggest reason why we are 4-9 today.
Well, you'll probably get your wish in next year's draft. Mangold might retire, Clady will be cut, and Breno could be let go as well. Brian Winters is a FA, and who knows how that'll go. Some team might overpay him, and he won't even look back exiting that door from Florham Park.
This draft has some good OT prospects rated as first rounders. Cam Robinson from Alabama and Mike McGlinchey from Notre Dame might be worth a look if we trade down out of the top ten. The Jets could then go offensive line again with additional picks. Shore up that o-line like the Cowboys have done. Give Petty and/or Hackenberg a chance to really develop the right way.
let's not leave out woody..Of course. If Mac does not utilize FA and the draft, 2017 will be at least as bad, probably worse. It's also a year late. He should have done exactly what we're talking about now last year.
Make no mistake about it. It isn't just Bowles that is at fault for this season. Mac was incredibly irresponsible in the draft. He played his role in this shit show.
Now I agree with most, he should not be fired, but he needs to know he'd better shape up and start being much more responsible with draft picks. It's almost like he has no sense of the bigger picture??
let's not leave out woody..
the HC not reporting to the GM is ass backwards..
why have both bowles & maccagnan report only to you, after essentially conceding you're not a "football guy" by hiring casserly & wolf as consultants, to help hire both of them??
i will check that out.. i admit i'm a bit fuzzy on what was the hiring process was.. i thought i remembered casserly & wolf's candidate was bowles & maccagnan signed off on it after interviewing bowles.. any links would be appreciated..Totally agree about Woody and the structure he set up. I made this point in the "Woody is the problem" thread. Also, it is ass backwards to select the coach *before* you hire the GM. Check out the chronology of the hirings. It has been mentioned several times by the beat writers and football columnists in this past week.
i would guess you're not surprised E..Team is happy for Petty. Seems like they genuinely like him. From Mo running onto the field and celebrating with Petty after Powell's td run, to this. Maybe the locker room isn't lost and they just suck. I'm excited to see more development in the next few games.

You have it right. Manish Mehta had a column about this a few days ago in The News, as did Gary Meyers. Brian Costello or Mark Cannizzaro likewise in the Post. There's a big difference between *selecting* a candidate and signing off on him. The whole thing was that the two finalists were T.B. and Dan Quinn, but Quinn was not available yet because the Seahawks were still in the playoffs. Woody was afraid that if he waited, he might lose out on both, so he chose the "bird in hand."
one coach ascending, the other, well you get it.....last year everyone would have said that Quinn was an awful pick. What a difference a year makes.
