If Darnold hadn't missed those games we could have finished 9-7 or 10-6 and frustratingly just missed the playoffs.
A couple really bad losses cost the team a decent season.
I was just thinking this after today's win....I predicted 10-6..... if Darnold & Mosley stayed healthy what could've been this season?.
This is a actually a pretty good roster.....the HC is still very questionable.
Plus the whole kicker screw up didn't help matters any, and also not having a veteran QB back up are both huge Front office screw ups that cost us wins. Next year....everyone needs to be more prepared.
I thought 9-7 if they remained healthy would have been possible. I also thought they would navigate that rough early part of the schedule and go 2-4, and then go on a run. The run came, but it was after a 1-5 start and it included bad losses to teams like Miami and the Bengals. They go 2-4 and handle business against the bad teams, we are talking about a team looking at 8 or 9 wins.
Losing to the fish and Bengals were completely unacceptable losses for Gase....especially the Bengals who still have only 1 win. The Bills loss was because the Jets started the season unprepared with a JV kicker....not cool in my book.
Had the Jets hired a qualified and experienced HC....9 wins looking at 10.
Jets had a great opportunity to take advantage of a pretty soft schedule this year too....with the NFC east the way it is....next year might not be so soft.
Missing those games was a blessing for Darnold, we would have still lost all 3 and Darnold would have been the one injured instead of Siemian. The Defensive collapse vs Buffalo / missed kicks too,and failure to appear vs Miami and The Bengals are what cost us a shot at the playoffs.
Look, this was a solid win against a good football team. I want to give credit where it's due - the o-line played their best game of the year against a great defensive front. Other than TJ Watt sack (he's a fantastic player so you can't help that), they ran the ball pretty well, protected Darnold well, didn't get penalized. And the game plan was a good one. Be conservative and make enough plays to win. Darnold played well against a top notch secondary too. Defense was excellent except for one blown coverage. What I liked there, is they benched the kid after that - teach him a lesson. Austin has played well overall, but you can't make those kinds of mistakes, so let him sit and think about it.
Gase has a good game plan, the team played hard and physical the entire game. Very good win. A step in the right direction.

It's a win. But still not enough scoring from the "offensive guru" Gase and supposed wunderkind Darnold. Lots of plays and scores left on the field for no points.
I agree with the general statement that Gase has not displayed "offensive guru" status. No idea why Darnold is getting bashed in your post.
I will say this - here's the thing about scoring enough points - you need to score enough points to win. It's that simple. If that's 3 points or 45 points, it doesn't matter. They won, they scored more points than the Steelers - they scored enough points.

With this line? Yes, I'm happy. It is some of the worst line play in the past 30 years.
Watching the Chiefs vs Chicago, it was striking how large a pocket Mahomes had to work from compared to that afforded to Darnold.
Dilemma for the Chiefs next week, with Wildcard weekend looming do they go full strength to keep their chances of a bye or accept that New England will beat Miami and rest their starters.
And in a nutshell, this is what has bothered me about the performances of Gase and Darnold. Okay, our O line sucks. Why hasn't the "genius" Gase designed an offense to compensate for this? Come up with imaginative approaches to offset this deficiency? Revolutionized the NFL's philosophy on offense with his stunning ways to offset a bad O line? But that's not what we see. We get the same trite game plans with handoffs to Bell and Darnold sitting back in shotgun for deep attempts or dump offs.
And for his part, Darnold has not elevated his play at the QB position to also help offset the O line deficiency. A supposed can't miss franchise QB would have generated more wins, mono or not. Against top flight NFL competition he has not shown very much other than to fumble a lot and throw idiotic picks. Geez, even against the Steelers this weekend (who were clearly not playing that great and deserved to lose because of our defense) he had a bunch of overthrows and did not generate enough scores to put the game out of reach. If not for a great play by Maye (can't believe I'm actually typing that) we lose that game too with that last minute TD.

The really sad part is that some of us know that we'll most likely see a carbon copy of this season next year. Maybe, if everything goes our way (which I doubt with Gase's track record) a win or two more but still no playoffs. Then the voices to fire Gase will become overwhelming and he's gone. And if Darnold does not elevate his game in year three? The way the "win right now" NFL has become, we'll be looking to draft or sign another QB. No one waits four or five years for a franchise QB to emerge any more.

I've seen competition in my lifetime. I don't care. I really don't care about spending on a bunch of older free agents so the team can compete for a wild card and the fans can stop their constant whining.
