Pick #103 - Bryce Petty - QB - Baylor

So you'd still add a QB till you get one and then keep adding them, right? Would you draft a developmental QB annually?
I would keep drafting until I found the right one. I would not say every year as a rule. I may not have totally evaluated who I have on the team already but if I had I would pull the trigger every year until my franchise QB was here.

Let's get this back on track guys. It's a Bryce Petty thread.
I know it seemed OT 51, but the stats conversation started because reporters like to tweet from camp when a QB (Petty) throws an INT, but they rarely provide context. Not all INT's are the QB's fault and in this instance it appears a dropped pass turned into an INT, so it was really on Shaq Evans. Anyway thats how the stats conversation got started, so while it seemed disconnected, it actually wasn't.

That's fine Ham. I was mainly referring to the insults back and forth and turning yet another thread into a pro/con Geno cluster.

Cool 51, I just wanted to clear that up because I know I can veer off into a million different directions sometimes, and it looks like, what does this have to do with the price of tea in china? :)

Bryce Petty: The First 23 Years

In-depth profile worth watching, its the best video I've seen on Bryce Petty:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbLJ9aTTluk

After they won the BIG 12 Title they lost a 42-41 heartbreaker in the Cotton Bowl to Connor Cook and Michigan State, but they didn't lose because of Bryce Petty, he lit MSU up for 550 Yards in that game. Tremendously exciting game.

I actually have in the past, many times, and of course I was accused of making excuses for Geno by the folks who didn't want to hear anything other than Geno stinks and he needs to be benched, which may or may not have been true, but that doesn't change the fact that not every INT is the QB's fault.

Like I said, Supe, if there is a stat in football and the way it is tabulated that I would overhaul and turn into separate stats, one attributed to the QB and the other attributed to the Receivers, its the INT ... worst kept stat in football in my view, which paints a distorted picture ... stats should make things clear, not blurry, and IMO the INT stat, by the flawed way its designed, creates a blurry image, it does not give you an accurate picture.

If I was running a football team I would tell my scouts, pro and college, don't use the official stats for INT's, don't cite them in your reports, watch the film and cite only the INT's that are the QB's fault, the rest are not relevant.

You would have traded Milliner for Stacy too.

I don't know about that trade, but I love Stacy.

HIs nickname should be Pocket Hercules. Have you seen him in practice? He's 5'9 but 235lbs of ripped muscle. He looks like bowling ball. If you watch his highlights, the kid has burst and cut back ability. Won't be shocked if he makes the team and Ridley doesn't.

Guys, watch that video I posted, its not like every other video, its awesome, you get a feel not only for what kind of football player he is, but also his background, character, and what kind of competitor we drafted.

Just a heads up.

Thanks Ham

Great to see a kid arrive who can potentially be the talented leader we need at QB

No hot dogs on the sideline

No forgotten plays from the playbook or missed meetings due to having trouble with complex concepts like time zones

The perfect guy to take over from Ryan Fitzpatrick when he is ready to roll

Yeah, just a kid who pop shit to coaches the steps on the practice field and throws 2 picks 6s. I'd like him to shut up and learn the playbook.

Be great in the field, not just in his head. He's got some Jay Cutler in him, that's for sure. I'd like to read zero more call outs from Gaily about how cocky he is and zero more interviews where he says the game isn't too big for him. I'd like to see his play start doing the talking. So far, he's the worst QBon the team, which isn't a surprise from where he came from, but he needs to ratchet his mouth down a notch for me. I mean come on, he's a 3rd string QB behind Geno and Fitzpatrick...some humility would be nice.

I know no one wants to believe me Petty won't be ready this year, and the above article is about RG3, but when Mike Shanagan explains Baylors offense, it applies to Petty as well.

Notice how he points out, Baylor doesn't even have a play book or ask their WRs to run a standard WR route tree...you're kidding yourself if you think petty can play this year.

When he calls an out route, it will be the first time in 4 years. It will also be the first time he makes a decision on where to go with the ball on his own...not a called play with an expected outcome.

His offense is a designed pass like a handoff. They call the play that includes who he is to throw to...he's never even had to make a decision on where to go with the ball...

Sheldon Richardson and his 8 sacks and 54 QB pressure can be cocky. Petty and his 4 practices, 3 INTs in those practices, and 2 of them pick 6s cannot be cocky. Make sense, Tim Biakabutuka?

TOJ takes a look at Bryce Petty. Definitely worth the read to measure expectations.

http://turnonthejets.com/2015/05/new-york-jets-film-room-bryce-petty/

Wow, 51. You know I'm not a TOJ fan, as every post is always with green glasses, IMO, especially your boy Joe. But they shred him here. The QB he is compared to - EJ Manuel, Locker, etc (not them specifically, but the scouting reports they chose).

They essentially said if we are lucky, he'll develop into a backup QB you only want to play in spot starts. While they offer some glimpses of hope, what I took out of the article is they don't feel the probability is very high he develops into anything but a backup QB at best.

Also, I love his mechanics and deep ball...but I didn't realize he lacked zip on his ball so poorly and their analysis of QBs that throw the ball as slowly as him is scary.

I think this paints a better picture of why he went rd 4, IMO.

Yeah, it certainly doesn't paint a very pretty picture. I'll hope for the best, but it wouldn't shock me if their assessment came true.
