not sure what you are getting at here in bashing petty. should we only pick QBs in the 1st round? should we have drafted a QB at 6? if so, who? do you think it's a waste of a pick to take a non-1st round QB? should the jets not even have drafted a QB and just go with geno, fitz and simms?

very few here are calling petty the savior. but it seems you are writing him off before he even enters his 1st training camp. yes, the odds aren't great that a 4th round pick turns into a franchise QB. maybe if we took petty in the 2nd instead of the 4th he would have a better chance to succeed...

Not to speak for him, but when I read it, I took this quote "recent history shows Petty future is pretty much determined" to be speaking of how well spread QB have succeeded in the NFL...and as far I as I recall, only 1 is in the top 10-15 QBs in the NFL (I may be forgetting someone)...Aaron Rodgers. Beyond that, the next most successful may be Alex Smith. That doesn't bode well for Petty, IMO, when we can only think of 1, maybe 2, guys who have made the transition and made it work. If I am forgetting some names, Im all ears. I'd like a better comparison because I dont think his game is like theirs at all...he's less mobile, IMO.

BTW, didnt include RG3 or Kaepernick because I dont think we know what they are in the NFL yet...we do know what Rodgers and Smith are, IMO.

Yes we should only pick QB's in round 1...that is exactly what I'm saying....unless you can give me a circumstance where drafting one later helps. I'm not holding out hope for the next Tom Brady anymore than I'm holding out hope to hit the powerball

you may not remember but we had this sort of discussion last year when Boyd was drafted and I called that a wasted pick as well...

Clemens was picked in round 2, and Geno has this year to prove himself, another 2nd rounder

I'm not calling for Petty to be cut, he won't be cut being a 4th round pick even he doesn't play better than Simms he will be on the team.

When they can tell me the last time the Jets made the playoffs without a 1st round QB talent I'll be willing to listen...

Which is why Geno is the KNOWN quantity (worst QB in NFL last two years) and Petty is the UNKNOWN quantity (future to be determined).

If Geno can turn it around, great -- but IMO he has more going against him than Petty does, simply because Petty hasn't been given a chance yet . . .

Brooks Bollinger, Glen Foley, Kellen Clemens, Taj Boyd, Greg Mcelroy...will get it right one day...playoff QB's for Jets..Ken Obrien, Vinnie, Chad, and Sanhez...get the 1st round guy.

Warner wasn't drafted at all, Montana and Moon were before the rounds got cut to 7 and Russell and Favre are 2nd and 3rd rounders respectively, wich history shows to be more succesful...that leaves the Brady

Since you asked, no -- I don't consider Petty or Simms legitimate competition for Geno AT THIS POINT.

However, I do not feel Geno has shown anywhere near enough to be the clear-cut favorite over a mediocre, injured veteran.

Yes, it hurt to type that, but it doesn't change the reality of the situation . . .

I do realize that...but at least Geno has had 2 years experience....and has faced actual defenses..unlike Petty who has never....and I know a lot of Genos stats were skewed..thats why he fell to second round in some part...he threw a lot of 2 yard screens to Tavon Austin who took it 70 yards more....but at least he has 2 years experience...and has had some decent moments,..Im not saying he is Canton bound..just saying..he is best option for Jets at this point in time.....
