Pick #103 - Bryce Petty - QB - Baylor

Manning was a #1 pick same as Winston, and Mariota was the #2 pick. Petty is a 4th round pick and that's a huge difference. Most rookie and young QB's are expected to struggle but it's the top picks that get time to get better. As long as Mariota is healthy, Mettenberger will never see the field in Tenn, same thing in Tampa with Winston if he's healthy and professional. I have no doubt the Jets will be looking for someone they see as franchise QB talent either thru draft or trade.

So if anyone watch the Titans pre-season game, are we thinking maybe the Jets should trade for Mettenburger or just give Petty more time to develop. He looked really good for them titans, I must admit.

Petty looked reasonable good and I will admit I realize it was his very first game action. As Mettenberger is a second year player. I'm good with Petty and think were on to something here. Just wanted to see what everyone else thought.

I really doubt either Mettenberger, or Glennon is available right now unless a team is willing to give up a ransom. If they have interest probably have to wait until next off season. Think they are just going to sign a vet this season and live with the situation.

I'm not surprised. Go watch Eli Manning's fourth career start against the Ravens and I challenge anyone to find footage of more incompetent QB play. This is a guy who won multiple Super Bowls. There doesn't have to be a middle ground. there should be an understanding from fans that QB development can take awhile

You're comparing the first game of preseason to a regular season game against a Ravens defense?

Pretty sure you missed my entire point . . .

So you would've had a different take if it were a regular season game ? Ok , got it.

You can't draw conclusions whether it was regular season or not. No matter how bad they look. People need to understand these Qbs can take years to develop.

..... Next year's rd 1 talent is like the year Eli, Rivers, and Big Ben came out...why would you pass on that for a guy looking at a playbook for the first time since high school? He's never even called plays before...but you pass on a pro style QB for a guy who is learning to take snaps under center? I don't think so. That's how you get a GM fired...

You nailed it on the head. Next year is setting up to be a VERY deep class. There's probably 4-5 QB's that can go in round 1. If you're MacDaddy you go get the one you think can be the Franchise guy. Then you let Petty and him battle it out next year with Geno.

We MUST get the QB situation taken care of. 3 year Revis window is what I'm hoping for so he can sell his Pats cheat stained ring.

No one is "drawing conclusions". A poster simply said he was surprised the top 2 QBs in the draft looked lost in an opening preseason game. You then compared that to how Eli looked against a formidable defense in a game that counted.

Just because we don't know where these QBs will end doesn't mean we can't comment on where they started . . .

Never had an issue with commentary .

Again, why is there surprise ? Don't be surprised. They will look terrible , even the best ones . Doesn't matter where they are drafted . I don't get why this is surprising . They can and will look bad in preseason and regular games

Have to agree on the apparent quality of the 2016 NFL Draft QB prospects

In fact, the depth and quality looks to be shaping up so great that teams don't even have to think about tanking, sucking for Luck or the Duck to get a guy who could develop into a potentially franchise guy. My list is 9 deep at this point so some of these guys will definitely be there on Friday and maybe even Saturday

My top nine in order of future NFL franchise QB potential

1. Connor Cook, MSU

2. Jared Goff, Cal

3. Cardale Jones, The OSU

4. Carson Wentz, NoDakSt

5. Christian Hackenberg, PSU

6. Patrick Towles, Kentucky

7. Jacoby Brissett, NC State

8. Cody Kessler, USC

9. Gunner Kiel, Cincinnati

1 through 4 will probably go in the first 10 picks, 5 through 7 in the late first or early to mid second and 8 and 9 somewhere in the first 4 rounds

The Jets if they wish can easily pick up another guy who can compete with Fitzpatrick and Petty for the starting QB position in 2016 or 17

You know... in the wake of this pathetic locker room fight involving the starting QB, does anyone fear for Bryce Petty? If I were Todd Bowles, I would tell Bryce Petty to go to Ryan Fitzpatrick for anything involving life and QB advice.

I would not want that creep Geno teaching Bryce Petty anything. I would every attempt to keep Geno as far away from Bryce as possible.

Difference is Petty has character. People with character are not usually swayed by people without it.

Pretty much what Tebow said. IMO Fitz, even though his skill is limited, will be a great mentor for Petty. Guys with limited skill that hang around the league for 11 years are usually pretty good teachers, and know their role

HYATT™ went on record early, though apparently not often enough, about his opinion on GeNOT Smith ever becoming an NFL QB, let alone a franchise one.
While HYATT™ doesn't want to come off as a perpetual St. Nancy of a Sissy about the lack of QB talent on the Jets teams of the past 40 years, Bryce Petty is also NOT the long-term answer for this franchise.

2016 will hopefully provide that guy - though if the Jets are half as good as HYATT™ thinks they can be under The Amish Rifle's leadership, it's going to be the worst possible year to NOT suck and end up picking in the 20s with other WC and division winning teams.

I know throwing a season is NOT exactly what anyone wants, but given the QB class of 2016, HYATT™, as a long view RESPONSIBLE GM, would definitely have to raise the issue with my owner and coaches.

Mac saying Jets will add a vet QB by the end of the preseason poinTs to a red shirt year for Petty.

Just feel like Bryce has the tools between the ears that this team has been lacking for years since Chad Pennington to grow and become a stellar QB.

I'am sure he will pick Fitzpatricks brains and also Flynn. He is a student of the game who wants to be on the pitch but he learned at Baylor that being patient is a great thing.

As far as him learning from Geno, he probably is definetly learning on what not to do in the NFL.

Just listening to him you can tell the guy has a high ceiling and he is very mature for his age, something that the last QB under the helm the past two seasons lacked:

I'm with you. I just wish Petty was good enough to start now. I was hoping we had another Russell Wilson situation on our hands. Hard to stomach seeing Fitz or Flynn behind center this year. I don't want to rush the kid and ruin his career, so if he needs a year then give it to him.

I hear you loud and clear and also wished that was the case. Though i feel with a veteran such as Fitz, who knows the system very well, can teach Bryce the nuances and proffesionlism of the game. Something Geno obviously knows nothing about at this point in his career.

I'am more than sure the Jets will draft another young gun in next years draft. It's the only way to continue our perpetual prcess of find "The one".

IMHO, we will find him with the current regime we have running this organization.

Thats what I think happens too. It may not be rd 1, but I thik another young stud prospect is added in next year's draft. Petty likely gets a shot to start next year...but next year's draft class is full or QBs from pro style systems that wont need to learn to take snaps under center, read defenses, formations, alignments, or identify Mike linebackers (something Bowles said he struggled with during the first preseason game)...many QBs will come in at 22 (Petty is 24) starting as a rookie where we hope Petty is next year. It will be interesting. Great post.

Sounds good to me. I think they will also if they haven't already in Petty.
