HYATT™ diagrees.
What do these 3 things all have in common?
1996 New England Patriots (went from [6-10] to [11-5] & in the Super Bowl against the Packers)
1997-1999 Jets (went from [1-15] to [9-7],[12-4 & an AFCC game], then [8-8] when Vinny got hurt)
2000-2014 Cheatriots (only losing season was 2000's [5-11])

It's Belicheat.
It's ALWAYS been Belicheat, and will continue to be Belicheat long after Tommy Two-toner is camping under a Costa Rican moon full-time.

You and your Tom Brady bias are amazing!

Belichick was 5-14 as the Patriots coach and on the verge of being fired until Brady stepped in, saved his career and chance of ever being a head coach again. He was on the verge of being canned until Mo Lewis saved his job...

they went from 5-14 under Belicheat to 11-2 that year with Brady at QB...silly HYATT.

I just find it interesting how Petty responds to the signing of Matt Flynn. I'am sure he will pick his brain but will fight his tail off to regain the reps he will have to relinquish to the evntual back up.

Also will be intriguing how the coaches handle the maturation process of Bryce. Do they allow him the opportunity to remain the back up if does show improvement or is it completely irrelevant to the point where the decision has been made that he will not see the field this year and place him as the 3rd stringer regardless.

Personally, i feel Petty will get ALOT of reps tonight and the last game of the preseason. Flynn will get the last 1/2 vs the Giants. I dont think Bryce sees much action next Saturday.

Flynn isnt playing tonight...safe to say Petty will play a lot.

Flynn can't play a half against the Giants...it is mathematically impossible since Fitzpatrick will play 2 quarter and the first drive of the 3rd. Flynn will have about 1 week of practice under his belt heading into the Gaints game and will be coming off an injury. I'd bet he only gets a couple drives since he wont know the playbook. I think Petty will play 3-4 drives vs the Giants.

Flynn may start the last preseason game, play 1-3 drives, Petty 2 full quarters, then Heaps gets the 4th quarter. That would be my guess. I dont think Flynn will learn the playbook fast enough to play 2 full quarter next week...but we shall see...plus he's fragile...and damaged goods...so I dont think they risk further injury.

Dan, I think your boy gets lot of reps this preseason. Every pass is fun to watch though, right? Im sure we agree on that 100%.

Maybe the Jets get this right with Petty. I think it's pretty clear that he's a guy with a high ceiling if you just have patience with him. Hopefully, he gets a lot of work in the preseason, and learns a lot the rest of the way studying film and shadowing Fitz all season.

Just be a sponge, kid.

And be patient Jets fans and organization...

I agree.

This time last season Petty was rated as one of the top QB's in NCAA. Some people were saying he might be the first pick in the draft if he had the same kind of season he had in 2013.

In the first game against SMU Petty suffered 2 cracks in the transverse process in his back, and missed the next game. The injury isn't a long term debilitating injury, but is lingering, and very painful. He still put up some excellent numbers, just didn't perform as well as he did in 2013. That coupled with the fact that he was out of Baylor's spread, had him fall in the draft. Some people, not all, still had him as a late first, early second. IMO he was a steal in the 4th.

From the reports, he is very intelligent, patient, and takes coaching well. Bowles recognizes he needs a year to acclimate to the NFL. Bowles is wisely not allowing him to be put in the position of back up once the season starts.

The extra reps he is now getting due to the Smith situation is invaluable to him. IMO he is going to get a less vanilla offense to deal with tonight, and struggle a bit. It won't mean he is a bust. Just that he is a student right now.

Personally I think he is in the best situation he could be. Fitz who has survived 11 years in the league, with out NFL type physical tools, and seems to be a nice person, is the perfect mentor for him.

I really have high hopes for Petty in 2016. We'll see how it plays out.

One of the positive things that Petty displays is what is called a "quick release" No wind up. ball is drawn to his ear, and bang it explodes out with good velocity. It is a trait that many HOF QB's have like Namath and Marino. Not saying he's going to be either, but it's good company to share a trait with.

100% agree. And yes, i get gitty when he drops back. Fun seeing another young gun out there with potential , especially between the ears.

Totally up'ed his game tonight. Very conservative but he is a gamer. Does exactly what his coaches tell him to do.

I know he is not ready yet . I had a good feeling about his long term future here when we drafted him and he has shown me nothing yet to make me doubt my opinion.

show'd great growth from week 1 to week 2...still think we have to be patient and give him time. Definitely gave fans something to be excited about.

Well after that game I almost want to start Petty and see what happens. His growth from week one was fairly astounding and he has the quick decision/release that elite QBs have. Fitz will dink and dunk his way to semi decent stats but won't win us anything. Fitz really only made plays to Brandon and none that Petty would not have himself.

Go Bryce! But if started this year and sucked , the same Geno headhunters would be after him. Caution : he may struggle next year, if he starts

What did you think of Petty going through his progressions?

That TD pass showed that the kid is working, studying and playing his butt off. He went through his progressions as a veteran.

I feel he will have his ups and downs, but as indicated by last week to this one, the kid is a fast learner.

Like i stated in the game thread, if Bryce plays like tonight next week and week 4 of the preseason, Bowles has to pencil him in as the number 2.

Rookie quarterback Bryce Petty played much better in his second outing. Petty went 12-for-19 for 168 yards and a touchdown after looking shaky in his debut against the Lions.
“He was a little more poised,” Bowles said. “That’s the progress we’re trying to get with him, get better every week, a little bit better every week. He got better from last week to this week. Hopefully, he’ll keep moving forward.”
Petty said he was not as nervous this time out.
“I think last week I had no idea what to expect as far as the game goes, as far as myself emotionally how it would roll,” Petty said. “I felt like coming into this week I would have a better understanding of how things went down and how things work. I felt a lot more comfortable out there.”

Here is Petty's post game presser. This kid IMHO is the real deal. He handles adversity very well and learns from it.

Very promising to know that this time next year, the QB competition will be an excellent one with Petty and another young gun. I'am sure he will prepare at a high level come next off season to become the unquestioned starter of the 2016 NYJ.

BINGO

That's exactly what I am seeing. He has the arm talent, and he's doing what he's told. That's what some of the draft profiles I had read said about him. He takes coaching well.

That's a good combination for a young QB. Think Flynn is going to cut into his reps next week, but he still got a lot of very valuable reps over the last 2 weeks.

Sounds like a great plan. If he's allowed to develop could happen.

I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves with Petty. Look, I'm just as optimistic as the next fan regarding Petty's prospects as our eventual starter. But let's keep this in perspective. He still needs a lot of work, and is still not a sure thing. He did a decent job against backups. That's progress, but he's still got a ways to go.

Just as I'm critical of the doomsday crowd overreacting to early exhibition football, I'm also very cautious to start reading too much into the positives, too. This talk of Petty perhaps challenging for a starting job as early as this season is nuts.
