Yes, Jameis Winston is in shape, and is prepared to throw at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Whether he will or not remains to be seen.
Via Jim Corbett of USA Today, the Florida State quarterback isn’t sure whether he’s going to go through the full array of passing drills this week in Indianapolis,
“It’s a game-time decision,” quarterback coach George Whitfield Jr. said. “He’s a very big believer in himself, so it’ll be interesting. He’s prepared to do it. Whether he goes in and does it will probably be determined a couple of days from now.
“At this time, he hasn’t made a decision.”
It has become a bit of a rarity for a top prospect to throw at the Combine, with most leaning on the scripted workouts at Pro Day, in familiar settings, with receivers they’ve known for more than five minutes.
But whether he throws or not, Whitfield insisted that Winston was in shape, after some less-than-flattering photos hit the internet last week.
“He’s lost about 12-15 pounds,” Whitfield said. “When you hear stuff about Jameis, the weight and he’s getting fat — What do people think that I’ve been golfing while he’s been playing Call of Duty?
“He’s always had a thing about pushing his stomach out. I hadn’t seen the pic until Saturday. You smile about it because people got it and they jumped on it. When I saw him later, Jameis laughed and said, ‘I’m going to be out in front of the world in a couple of days anyway.’
“He’s been working his butt off the last five weeks to make sure he’s going to make a tough decision for somebody. He looks good. I like where he is, focused, driven. He’s enjoying the process.”
Of course, the bigger part of the process for Winston will be off the field in Indy, as teams begin to use their time with him to determine if his extracurricular activities are enough of a concern to change his draft status.
