Calvin Pryor on being moved to Jets' strong safety: 'Music to my ears'

Asked to assess his 2014 rookie season with the Jets, safety Calvin Pryor didn't bite his tongue.

"A learning curve," Pryor said in an interview that aired on the team's website Monday, the first day of the Jets' offseason program. "I went through a lot of things last year—more bad than good. Which I think helped me."

The Jets drafted Pryor out of Louisville with the 18th overall selection last May. He was known as a big hitter. But because the Jets were weak and depleted at cornerback, Pryor was forced into playing more in coverage than he and the Jets would have wanted. The results weren't always pretty, and Pryor even got benched for a spell in November.

"I was kind of placed in some positions that I wasn't normally placed in that caused me to do some things that I wouldn't normally do," Pryor said.

The Jets did get some reinforcements for this season. In free agency, they signed three cornerbacks—Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine—plus a safety to complement Pryor in Marcus Gilchrist.

Head coach Todd Bowles said Gilchrist, a converted corner, will play free safety to handle a lot of the coverage duties, which will give Pryor the chance to play strong safety and to position himself closer to the line of scrimmage.

"So I'm going to be back to my old self, doing what I do, being down in the box, and just tracking the ball down," Pryor said. "That was music to my ears. That made my day go by better. I'm definitely enjoying it."

Asked to assess the heavy-lifting the Jets did to upgrade their secondary with all of the aforementioned acquisitions, Pryor's eyes widened.

"Wow," he said. "I was excited by all of it. If it can help the team and help the team win, I'm all for it."

On the impact Revis and Cromartie are expected to have on the outside, Pryor said, "It makes [our] job easier as safeties. We don't have to worry about too much; this guy can handle his own, and it's been proven year-in and year-out. It gives me more confidence, that I've got somebody [like that] playing alongside of me."

Nothing really surprising here but thank god that this obvious move is being made. What a wasted rookie year for Calvin

Still amazed that Rex didn't see Pryor for what he is: an inside the box safety who thrived there at Louisville. Why put him in deep coverage? A rookie played out of position. That's a good way to ruin a young player.

I'm excited to see this kid punish people in his wheel house.

'Square peg in a round hole - Ryan'. Anything to fit his father's defense.

Ummm what are you guys talking about. Pryor played out of position because we didn't have the players to play in the secondary. Don't blame Rex he had no choice. Allen being moved to CB should have been a big indicator.

Yes and no. We were clearly undermanned at the CB position, but Ryan compounded the problem by playing Allen and Pryor out of position. Not only did it make the defense weaker, but it also retarded Allen's and Pryor's growth.

It makes me question Rex as a DC. This is two players -two first round picks- in Coples and Pryor, who have tons of potential, that Rex damaged by playing out of position. Just stupid and somewhat unforgiveable. I'm hoping Bowles can salvage both and get them to reach their high ceiling.

To me that highlights the Ryan/Idzik disconnect. I can't blame Ryan for this, but we had a HC who wanted to win now paired with a GM who was trying to patiently build a team. In retrospect, Idzik could not have read the situation any poorer. Ryan would rather trust a familiar, but mediocre safety who was at the end of his career than develop a promising player. Clearly a huge mistake on Woody's part.

If your secondary is weak, but you have guys who can fill roles, why would you move them out of the roles they actually fit? I don't understand the defense of Rex in this case.

We have bad corners, so let's move one safety to corner, and another SS to FS. This way, not only will we have bad corner play, but we'll add to it by having bad safety play. That will help our secondary.

All Rex did was create more holes in an already bad secondary by moving guys out of position. If you have no corners, at least try to compensate by having decent safety play.

He had to squeeze guys into the places and positions needed to copy Pop's out of date 1980s "46" Defense. The next original football thing Rex comes up will.be the FIRST

Something keeps telling me Coples is gonna have a monster year. Calias Campbell was a beast under Bowles in AZ, similar player to Coples. But Coples was seen as having more athleticism and talent coming out of college.

Mark it down Coples will be at least a 10 sack guy this year and havoc to RB's in the backfield.

If Coples has a monster year, the defense has a monster year. Great line, great secondary. Very good at stopping the run, and with the additions, tight coverage. If they can get pressure with Coples, this defense has the potential to be the best in the league.
