I'd say Sean Payton right now has the biggest grievance with the NFL of anyone. The application of a standard was set to him, and not to Belichick.

Anyone want to bet that there will suddenly be a few Garoppolo jerseys in Brady's size in Foxboro? I put NOTHING past Belichick.

Maybe if Tom cuts his hair to look like Jimmy...

Typical night in Patsland. Brady is completely innocent, the league is out on a witch hunt, and everyone else is just jealous.

Nothing like living up here.

Funny I thought the same thing. Fake Garoppojo broken nose and an excuse for a full tinted face shield to conceal who is behind center.

HA!

I'm not saying it would happen. I'm saying the thought has already crossed Belichick's mind.

You live in Patsie Homerville, surrounded by these delusional nitwits?

You have my sympathy.

I love almost everything about living in New England. But these people are just nuts.

What is most disappointing is that they don't even care about the integrity of the game, or anything else. There could be video of Brady himself putting a needle in a ball, while Belichick ties some cheerleader to a railroad track, laughing crazily and stroking his moustache, and Pats fans would deny the evidence.

Dan Shaughnessy has it exactly right, they live in an alternate universe when it comes to their teams.

They are worse than the worst small town jock-sniffers, I'm almost embarrassed for them, shameless homers.

They're like a whole community of the annoying jock-sniffers in the movie, Hoosiers.

The sad part is, most of the media up there enables them and feeds their persecution complex.

Shaughnessy couldn't be more right about the fan base. But you couldn't possibly say that in six states.

What gets me is that the Patriots CONSTANTLY dump on the league. They deny, obfuscate, refuse to cooperate, demand apologies, and cry about how the league has it out for them, and the league CONTINUES to have their backs.

Happened with Spygate, when the league destroyed evidence it found after issuing penalties, but not increasing the penalties.

Happened with the injury report business, when they have never been punished for blatant disregard while other teams are punished for minor violations.

Happened with the tripping incidents, where Belichick got nothing from either the team or the league for trying to trip Marvin Harrison during a play, while the Jets got punished AFTER firing Sal Alosi.

Happened with tampering charges, where the Pats got off while other teams got punished.

And it's happening here, where ignorance was insufficient to keep Sean Payton from getting suspended for a whole year, while Belichick got nothing because he was ignorant of the whole situation.

Even now, the Pats put out a statement that they would accept whatever findings the league had. And here they are, talking about appealing the findings. How many times can one team piss all over the league, only to have the league keep having their backs? I hate using this analogy, but it's like a bad romantic relationship. The Pats keep mistreating the league, and the league keeps enabling them to do so.

Unfortunately, I am worried by the fact that so many media types are saying the punishment was excessive. And not just media types from New England, where it would be expected. So I am starting to wonder if there might be a successful appeal.

It could be. But only if Brady allows access to the records he was hiding, and they exonerate him. If he was innocent, he would have granted access to those records from the start.

As for it being excessive, I think Sean Payton may disagree.

If public disembowelment was off the table, I guess this penalty was fair. But it should be a stepping stone to greater punishments if they violate the rules again.

I have no idea how appeals work. But I'm not sure Brady making his records available would be something that would necessarily be required of him. If it is, he surely will not appeal, because of course there is incriminating evidence in there. But I am worried that so many folks seem to feel the punishment was excessive. I'm sure he'll find some lawyers who will parley that general opinion into some sort of basis for an appeal.

Any idea how long appeals typically take to be decided?

I'm not sure. I would assume he has a limited time to appeal the decision, and that appeal would come fairly quickly.

Now, as far as when one could appeal, I do not know if you need to offer new evidence exonerating you in order to appeal or not. That is usually the standard in courts of law. Without offering new evidence, I don't know how Brady could expect to win any appeal.

How about finding a tech firm that produces a report that says the technical part of the Wells report is flawed? For enough cash, I am sure that can be had. And there was a lab, from the Boston area, that did some shoddy testing shortly after the accusations were launched, and they concluded the deflation was due to natural causes. They'd probably provide their test results gratis.

They may do that. But without cooperating with the investigation, it is hard to expect the Pats to get much league support.

Perhaps they bring in forensic units to do scientific audits and the such, but the league could very easily spin it on Brady and say that the easiest, and only, way to get a reduction would be to fully cooperate. Otherwise, the other evidence is just circumstantial and he's still hiding key pieces.
