Quinton Coples played just 15 snaps yesterday

We are getting a bit ahead with Pats discussion before the Skins, but forgive us.

One other thing I would say about scheme against the Pats. I think that historically the most successful pressure against Brady has been up the middle rather than from the edge. To get in his face up the middle. That may mean that the predominant blitz packages will be different for the Pats than for Miami where the edge was good. I'd expect to see more LB interior blitz - creating hard choices for the OL inside. Maybe more safety blitzes and maybe more blitzes from a DB lined up on the slot receiver who instead blitzes - especially if he stunts into the gap between the guard and the tackle.

or some other stuff like that to create big push up the middle into Brady's face.

He gets penetration and he forces the QB into a lot of bad throws.... No he doesn't get the sacks but he makes plays that do not show up in the stat line that help the defense. He is a good player.

I don't know. He may contend that it wasn't his idea to be moved to OLB. That he's a still a great DE. He may want try to get top dollar from another team in FA. Then that teams puts him back at DE and he plays great for them.

That's why I think the CS should end the experiment now. Put him back in the DL rotation and see what he can do? He had 5.5 sacks his rookie season playing at DE as a part time player. I would think it's worth finding out what he can do.

I am not giving up on him yet.... I still think at worst he is a great rotational guy and fantastic depth.... Not everyone can be MO and Sheldon.

I agree, I'm disappointed that he's not a more dominant player because I believe he has the physical talent to make more impact plays in these games, but by no means do I view Coples as a bust. You're right, he does apply pressure to the QB and that indirectly contributes to turnovers, even if he's not directly causing turnovers with big hits and strip sacks on the QB. I think we all believe he should be doing more of the latter (impact plays) and thats a real source of disappointment for Jets fans, but that doesn't mean he's a bust. I would say he's a good player who compliments the defense and occasionally makes a big play, but not an impact player who drives the bus.

So we just won't pay him like one, and if someone else does at least we'll get a comp pick for our troubles . . .

Agreed, if he's not going to play like an impact player then we can't pay him like one. If we can pay him like a good player and keep him I would do it, but if somebody else wants to pay him like an impact player then we have to let him walk and take the comp pick. That said, he still has time to change that perception. There's almost a full season left for him to really rise to his physical potential and make himself a lot of money. Its unlikely that he will, people who are born round don't die square, but he still has time to make a real impact this year.

Yep

Couldn't agree more with the bolded. Coples has the chance to reach up and grab the gold ring this year. A big time pass rusher is the one ingredient this defense needs to be a great one.

If he can be that guy...............They better pay him.

When the New York Jets return to action next Sunday against the Washington Redskins, one of the players to watch is outside linebacker Quinton Coples, whose role appears to be shrinking.

Yes, Coples made the trip last week to London, although it was sometimes hard to tell during the actual game. He played only 15 of 64 defensive snaps in the win over the Miami Dolphins. Fifteen snaps is a career-low for the former first-round pick.

Todd Bowles cautioned not to read anything into that, noting that Coples was used in the base package. "Unfortunately, Miami played a lot of sub-package," the coach said. "[Leger] Douzable went out to play some end and we had some packages for different people, and the package they kept us in just didn’t involve Coples. It had nothing to do with his play or the guys taking his place."

Yes, that's true, the Dolphins played most of the game with three receivers, forcing the Jets to stay in their nickel defense. The question is, why wasn't Coples included in that package? They opted to give more action to rookie Lorenzo Mauldin (20 snaps) than Coples, who's supposed to be a pass-rusher.Coples' playing time is down this season. Through four games, he's at 53 percent of the snaps, down fairly significantly from his 2014 share (68 percent). It's a new coaching staff with a different set of eyes, and they evidently see him more as a first- and second-down base defender than as a pass-rusher. The production hasn't been there; he's still looking for his first sack.

Unfortunately for Coples, the current NFL is played by nickel personnel. Because of wide-open passing attacks, the game is dominated by players who get the quarterback and players who cover receivers. It's why the Jets can justify paying $6.25 million a year to Buster Skrine, their slot corner. This could bite Coples next offseason. The Jets have exercised the fifth-year option for 2016 ($7.8 million), but the salary is guaranteed for injury only as of now. It's not fully guaranteed until next offseason, and that's a lot of money for a pass-rusher who can't get on the field to rush the passer.

Yep

Coples career is riding on the next 12 games. he needs to start getting some sacks, or he will be somewhere else next season.

Coples played even less snaps against the Redskins yesterday. Per NY Post:

4. The Jets are benefitting greatly from all those first-round picks they have used on the defensive line in recent years. Wilkerson (2011), Richardson (2013) and Williams (2015) are all playing well. But they have not all been hits. Quinton Coples (2012) is barely playing these days. On Sunday, he played just nine snaps (14 percent). That is the lowest total of his career, lowering the mark set in their last game against the Dolphins.

Copies needs to understand that Bowles will not tolerate mediocrity. If he asks you to do a specific job, in this case rush the passer, and you are not getting to the QB with regularity, at least generating hurries and hits on the QB if not outright sacks, then your playing time is going to be limited. The days of coasting and just doing enough to get paid and remain relevant are over. Either you are doing something to impact the outcome of these games, or Bowles will put somebody else on the field who at least gives his maximum effort on every play.

So its simple for Coples, if he wants to play more, start hitting the QB ... do that and I'm sure he will get more snaps.

I saw Coples beat in pass coverage on one play and only saw him once after that. If he isn't getting to the QB then he is a liability out there.
