Philip Rivers - QB - Chargers
The Chargers reportedly know the Philip Rivers is serious about not wanting to play in Los Angeles.
We're still fuzzy on exactly why Rivers is so against playing 120 miles up the freeway, but this isn't some narrative penned by the media. Rivers has told the team he'll be playing out the final year of his contract and his confidant at the Union-Tribune, Kevin Acee, believes the veteran quarterback won't be back if the team moves to L.A. The Chargers rumored interest in trading up for Oregon QB Marcus Mariota continues to gain steam.

Marcus Mariota - QB - Player
The Chargers are conducting a private workout in Eugene with Oregon QB Marcus Mariota Tuesday.
Perhaps HC Mike McCoy, OC Rich Reich, QBs coach Nick Sirianni and a bunch of front office members are just doing their due diligence. Or maybe the trade rumors flying around Philip Rivers and the Chargers have some legs. The narrative states that Rivers doesn't want to move to Los Angeles and the Titans, holding the No. 2 overall pick, want a proven veteran to stabilize their quarterback situation. "Many close to the situation believe the Chargers head to Oregon while considering the notion of a draft-day trade," says the Union-Tribune San Diego. Any potential deal hinges on Mariota falling to No. 2, as San Diego is reportedly not interested in Florida State QB Jameis Winston.

Phillip Rivers who is from northern Alabama which is about 1.5 hours away from the Titans home stadium. Rivers currently has 7 children (by 1 wife) and does not want them living in L.A.. He will not re-ink a new deal with the Chargers hoping they will trade him to the Titans so he can be close to home.

There might be, but I'm not sure he wants to be in a giant market. Just speculating at this point.

With the reference to his kids, I thought he might be trying to shield them from the big city. Certainly can do that in several of the 'burbs in the tri-state area. Need some big bucks to live in some of them, but that would not be a problem for him.

I think this is his goal, but who knows if it will happen. If it does happen, I send #70 to the Titans for Mettenberger and maybe future considerations. if they say no, but Chan Gaily says get him, I send #37 for Mettenberger. I think the kid has the goods. I didnt last year at this time, but loved what I saw from him vs the Steelers and eagles last year. the kid looked awesome. I wish I saw his game against Houston, who had a top 10 D, when he went for 300 in his first start throwing to...Nate Washington and Wright...yuck. The kid looked amazing playing with bums as a rookie...I'd love to get him with marshall and Decker...he's their type of QB who pushes the ball down the field.

couldn't the same be said about LA? i'm sure there are some very nice places a guy with his means could live and raise a family.

i tend to agree with the feeling that if he's so against living in LA, that i don't see him easily embracing the NYC market.

Seems like Tennessee is in play for Rivers if they want him. Maybe Rivers and the Chargers 1st for the 2nd overall pick?

San Diego would be crazy to do this deal. They can franchise Rivers after his contract is up, and franchise him again if necessary. The 2nd franchise tag will make his price prohibitive, but then the Bolts will have had Rivers for 2 more years and can deal him then if necessary.

Unless they really love Mariota, and are willing to suffer growing pains with the kid for a couple of years, Rivers isn't leaving San Diego.

Perhaps. But I'm familiar with the towns near NYC, but not at all with LA.

ESPn Insider:

Rivers firm about not going to L.A.?

There has been plenty of buzz lately about the possibility of the Tennessee Titans trading the No. 2 overall pick to the San Diego Chargers for Philip Rivers, so the Chargers could then take Marcus Mariota. The fact that Mariota reportedly is working out for the Chargers on Tuesday only fuels that fire.

The reasoning behind the move is a belief by some that Rivers, who is in the final year of his contract, would not want to move to Los Angeles if the Chargers move there, though he would be willing to move to Tennessee. We can count Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune amongst those who believe that buzz is legit.

"Despite some inside Chargers Park pressing the narrative that the Los Angeles factor is overblown, the team knows it is not," Acee wrote.

"There are numerous people in the organization dreading a move to L.A. as much as Rivers is. Everyone knows it is possible – some even believe likely – the team will move in 2016 or ’17."

Acee added: "Can we say for sure that Rivers won’t play in L.A.? Not any more than we can say it won’t snow in Carson or Inglewood next Christmas.

"So, yeah, take from that what you will."

Stay tuned, as the Rivers-Mariota rumors are sure to intensify in the coming days and weeks leading up to the draft.

Sure you can. We franchised and traded John Abraham in 2006.

Remember last year the Eagles tagged DJax and tried to trade him for anything they could get, they didnt get ny offers, removed the tag, and released him. Reportedly, they were asking for a 3rd rd pick for the franchised WR. here's the article:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d827568b5/printable/franchise-season-making-sense-of-tags-and-tenders

"The franchise tag allows teams to protect their investment -- which is a significant value. Even if a team does not particularly want to keep a player, or feels a long-term deal is hopeless, it can tag the player and put him on the trading block, knowing the value of the player is greater than the compensatory third-round pick the team could receive for losing a high-caliber player to free agency.

For example, let's examine the Eagles' situation. Philadelphia has enough salary-cap room to tag Jackson, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be donning midnight green in 2012. At the NFL Scouting Combine, Eagles brass broadcasted a clear message around the league that they would listen to trade offers for Jackson. This wasn't something that slipped out from a rogue source; Philadelphia basically took out a full-page ad in the paper announcing Jackson's availability. Teams don't make intentions this public if they are not truly interested in moving a player.

Now that Jackson's franchised, the Eagles are hoping a team will offer them more than a third-rounder -- the probable compensation if Jackson were to leave in free agency and Philly didn't go on another free-agency binge. (Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lost more free agents than they gained.) Philadelphia initially will claim it wants a first-rounder, but privately will take a little less. Long story short: By franchising Jackson, the Eagles put themselves in position to possibly gain a better draft pick if the speedy receiver departs.

However, the Eagles will play hard ball with any potential Jackson trade. With cap room available, they can bring Jackson back for the franchise number if no enticing trade options materialize. This would force the mercurial receiver to prove his worth in a potential walk year. And if he does, Jackson could earn the long-term contract he desires. By tagging Jackson, the Eagles are in full control and don't have to make a deal they don't want to make."
