Report: Ryan Fitzpatrick would rather not play than accept current Jets offer

PFT -- The standoff between the Jets and free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has been going on for quite a while now and Fitzpatrick appears to be trying a new tactic to get the Jets to offer him more money.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Fitzpatrick has told people that he would “rather not play football” than play for the Jets under the terms of their current offer. The Jets have reportedly offered Fitzpatrick somewhere in the neighborhood of $8 million while Fitzpatrick is reportedly seeking considerably more to return for a second season with the team.

That gap has been in place for the entire offseason and the Jets have visited with a couple of other quarterbacks — Robert Griffin III and Brian Hoyer — without signing either one. Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan said last week that re-signing Fitzpatrick remains the team’s focus, but there’s been no sign that they’re reversing course on their offer.

Schefter’s report doesn’t specify if Fitzpatrick would play for another team for the money the Jets are offering, but there hasn’t been any sign that anyone else is going to top what the Jets are willing to pay him. Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that Fitzpatrick “wants to play” and is not willing to sit out, although it’s not clear what he’d do if their offer remains the best one on the table.

The draft could bring a change if the Jets have their eye on an incoming quarterback and aren’t able to acquire him, but it’s not clear what else might shift their view of Fitzpatrick’s value at this point.

This is a bit ridiculous. He hit the market, and has found that he has no market outside of the Jets. Since he cannot find another option in an NFL team, he is trying to create a second option, that of not playing at all.

This has been reported by Costello that it's false so don't worry. I predict he signs after the draft

As soon as Fitz signed the big contract in Buffalo, he tanked. I'm hoping the Jets don't give in. I would rather suck with Geno or Petty or Hoyer than to watch Fitz waste our precious cap space.

It's funny sometimes when you read the blogosphere. People fire out tweets and other "breaking news" that's quickly followed by "so and so now denies that initial report". You saw it daily with Kaepernick, Bradford, and now Fitz.

I'm not putting any weight into reports that Fitz is furious and won't play for the Jets under that offer. It's probably some bored sports geek whipping up the rumor mill because the news feed was too slow. IMO.

Fitz will either play for the 7-8M the Jets seem to have offered and be the starter or be the backup for around $3-5M somewhere else or he will retire. Fitz has no leverage and nobody else wants him as a starter.

Best case scenario should be to sweeten the offer, and draft a potential replacement ( Hackenburg) in the 3rd round

The idiot or fool in me wants Fitz to retire or sign somewhere else so the Jets can go with Hack or Petty as starter. Then again, the rational and intelligent person in me knows we need Fitz for atleast one more year to let them both develop more and be ready for battle next year. Hopefully!

I wouldn't mind if he didn't sign. I want to start the rebuild and see what happens.

Me too, glad I'm not the only one. Well me, you and butterscotch.

Now if Fitz wants to sign a 2 year/$15M contract then I wouldn't mind that. Let Petty and Hack sit one year and then all three compete for starting job.

Starting Hackenberg or Petty is like the front office reverting to its foolish ways with Rex/Tanny.

This teams needs Fitz more than Fitzs needs the Jets. His experience in this offense will absoltley help the maturation of both of these young guns. Not only on the field but in the film room and what it takes to acquire the respect in the locker room.

Petty got the gyst of it last year and i'am sure he swallowed every thing Fitz had to offer. Hackenberg has no clue what the NFL is all about. I'am sure he will pick FItz's brains to no end due to the three years of a young kid right out of high school being demanded so much of.

Ryan Fitzpatrick will be a New York Jet. There's no mystery to this. The team is built to win right now. Given the strength of schedule at hand, we need an experience QB who knows this system inside out in order to compete with the best of them.

If Petty or Hack start, we will all be talking about how we now want our 1st overall Draft pick in 2017 to be a QB because these two flopped. Forgetting that these QBs needed time to be groomed.

Let's not forget how detrimental it was for Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith to not sit for a year. These two as far as i can remember have been one of the most savage discussions on topics in recent memory (respectively speaking). UNRIGHTFULLY SO. I'll be the first to raise my hand on Geno, anything he does i can't stand him because i see what he has within his demeanor. It's all about him. Thats my perception of the kid. Though say he sat a year, i think his mindset would have been a little different. Smith, such as Sanchez were rushed so fast unto the field, in a Shark Market where there is no mercy (just look at us fans for instance), that they were just too afraid to make a mistake. They forgot what brought them here. New York ate them up.

Don't wish the same for these two talented QB's. Hack needs a red shirt year. Petty at this point should go all out to be the back up. If Fitz goes down, atleast Petty has had the guidance of a well oiled veteran who taught him the nuances of the game. The kid has something to fall back on when he's going over plays on the sidelines at this level. Hack hasn't.

This report on Fitz not getting paid or retiring is complete BS. I wouldn't even be surprised if Mac put the agent up to this to cause a smoke screen in round one since IMHO they might already have a deal in place (in which the report did in fact come out) so that they would draft Darron Lee all along.

It's been over 40 years we havent won a super bowl folks. 2017 will be the year for the youngins. Give 2016 a chance with a vet who did pretty good for us last year. Atleast we will still be competitive with Ryan at the helm.
