Don't see that. His body is perpendicular to the field and his face is looking straight out into the field when he sticks his leg out.

Did we see the same video? Once he squares up to the field, he looks over his right shoulder, then sticks his leg out and gives a hip check into Harrison's path.

I'm looking at the video posted by nick. I see Belichick's face looking into the field, not back at the player. After the trip he glances sideways in the direction of the player. But as the foot goes out, I see him looking into the field. Of course the action is pretty fast. I could possibly be convinced if there were a series of stills showing otherwise. But in the full-speed video, I see him looking into the field just before sticking his foot out.

He doesn't fully turn his head 90 degrees, but he definitely looks in that direction. And he sure knew where to throw out his leg.

I'm sorry, but he absolutely knew what he was doing. How else would he know where to stick his leg, and throw his hip check?

Oh, believe me, I am not questioning he knew what he was doing. He was facing straight back at the player, then quickly swings his body back forward, away from the player, undoubtedly having a pretty good idea what the right moment would be to stick out his leg. That's why he also knew the right moment when to be looking into the field. But I think if there were a series of stills just at the moment before he sticks his foot out, then 2-3 shots showing his leg going out, they would show he was looking into the field at those moments. Much different than Alosi who is watching the play unfold and just waiting to stick his leg out. A series of stills of that event would be very different, I think.

You may be right. It looks like his head turns some, at least.

That said, Belichick moves his body, and his leg, a lot more than Alosi did. Alosi's seemed planned, like he knew where to position himself. Belichick's was more spur-of-the-moment.

It makes you wonder if one day, Belichick's career ends in shame the way Woody Hayes' did, with him punching at a Jet on the field.

I very well may be mis-remembering the Alosi incident. But when I saw the Belichick video, I thought his tripping move was pretty subtle. First several times I didn't see it at all. Then when I did see it, I thought the leg extension was not all that far out. But I agree, it was unquestionably intentional. I guess all I am objecting to is calling it exactly the same as the Alosi incident. And also important is that I saw the Alosi thing on a 68-inch high-def TV at close range. Much better views than the you-tube video.

It would be nice if Belichick goes down in flames at some point. But I don't know. With Goodell in his hip pocket, he has no reason to lose his cool. Of course, if by some miracle the league comes down on him hard for deflategate, things could be different.

Really? Belichick's was subtle? Then watch the Sal Alosi hit. If you think Belichick's was subtle, then Alosi was statuesque.

Alosi had his foot extended, but he left it there. He didn't throw his body into Carroll the way Belichick did with Harrison.

Yes, you're right. I was mis-remembering the Alsosi trip. Definitely more subtle than the Belichick move.

Yet a HUGE deal was made of Alosi, even after the Jets did the right thing and fired him. The media blew it up, and the league fined the Jets.

Belichick? Kraft did nothing to punish him, the league did nothing to punish the Pats, and the media storm wasn't half what it was for Alosi.

Yes, I wasn't even aware of the Belichick event. Of course, I was watching the Jet game when the Alosi trip went down, and I recall the announcers making a lot of it during the broadcast, probably because the guy Alosi tripped wound up on the ground, whereas in the Belichick case the player simply glanced back as if thinking "WTF did you just do?". But I don't recall the Belichick event at all. Did the announcers make a big deal about it during the broadcast?

I don't recall the announcers making a big deal of the Belichick hip check, but I may be wrong.

Trying to look at things objectively, that might go a long way toward explaining why the cases were handled differently by the league. Now, if the team of the guy who Belichick tripped asked the league to look into it and nothing was done, that's good evidence of preferential treatment.

It sounds from these links that the 2004 Belichick incident wasn't even mentioned until after Alosi's 2010 incident.

It all sounds like this incident was "unearthed" after the outrage over the Alosi incident, which suggests NOBODY made a big deal at the time of Belichick's cheap shot.

And you may be right. Harrison knew what Belichick did, and looked back at him incredulously.

But he didn't make as big a deal out of it at the time. And the media ignored it, even though the evidence was right there on tape. To me, it sounds like the media decided to make a big deal out of one incident and ignore the other, and that had implications on the league's punishment.

Well, again trying to be objective, with a guy lying on the ground in the Alosi case, it makes sense there would be a replay shown. And once the announcers noticed what happened, it makes sense that they would make a big deal out of it. In the Belichick case, you really have to know where to look to even realize something had happened. Now if an announcer had noticed, I'd be willing to bet they would have made a big thing about it too. That's the kind of thing announcers do. In short, I don't think the lack of attention to this case was due to bias.

Too bad the team didn't file a complaint. History might have been a lot different, especially when coupled with spygate.

Even if it doesn't suggest bias, it is yet another instance of cheating on Belichick's resume. When people talk about deflategate being the second instance of cheating for Belichick, it's humorous. The guy has a long list of incidents, some for which he was caught, and some for which, like this, he wasn't. But his track record speaks for itself.
