Sheldon Richardson Suspended 4 games

I think of anything this just makes it more likely the jets get the deal done with Wilkerson and they will wait till the last second to make a decision of Richardson. They will need to determine if they want to have air tight contract to get out of the deal with another failed drug test or just dump him and not take the risk. Next year we will be in a similar place Cleveland was when they shopped Gordon and turned down a 1 for him (the same year they traded Richardson)...then got burned for it. I think jets will wait and see how williams develops, gets the deal done with Wilkerson, and holds its breath with Richardson. They have 2 more years to deal with Richardson. It's the least of our worries now.

Williams needs to learn quick, Wilkerson needs to get over this toe thing, and we need to stay healthy.

I agree that worrying about Richardson's deal now is a little premature. And, the Jets could if they really wanted to, sign all three players if Williams turns out to be a Pro Bowl player. It's absolutely possible. But that is neither here nor there.

As far as Richardson's suspension, clearly he has made some bad choices off the field. Regardless of where you stand on the legalization issue, it's an NFL rule. The players know the rules and have to abide by them or they get suspended. Period. Richardson hurt the team and if the Jets start off poorly, particularly on defense, he is partly to blame. Richardson doesn't get a pass for this unless the Jets win and he cleans up his act. If he can't do that, then his future here is very much in doubt in my opinion. I don't think Bowles or Maccagnan will tolerate this kind of stuff for very long. And frankly I don't blame them.

Richardson came out with some post about how he pledged that this would never happen again. Well, he needs to prove it. I'll believe it when I see it.

He made some bad decisions - let's just hope it doesn't cost this team a game or two early in the season.

Interesting comments from Schefter on ESPN Radio in Albany yesterday:

http://1045theteam.com/adam-schefte...n-to-the-sheldon-richardson-suspension-audio/

With Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy and missing the first four games of this season, how much should the team have doubts on trusting Richardson going forward?
“The bigger concern if you’re Sheldon Richardson or the New York Jets at this point is that another violation can cost you a year,” said Adam Schefter, to Armen and Levack on 104.5 The Team in Albany, New York.
“[That’s] a loss of salary, loss for the team, the whole thing like that. That’s something that the whole team wants to avoid and you don’t want that to happen.”
Behind the scenes, Gang Green had been questioning the mindset of Richardson for quite some time.
“When you speak to people in that organization and go back to last year, they say that he had demonstrated some erratic behavior, he was late to some meetings. There were some people in that organization that were concerned with some of the signs that he was exhibiting and showing.”

Richardson is still under contract for another two years and Schefter says that despite the recent suspension, his current deal will not be affected. Now, what happens at the end of the 2016 season? That heavily depends on what Richardson does, on and off the field, between now and then.

Sheldon Richardson’s a superstar if he’s not an immature pothead

Sheldon Richardson’s a superstar if he’s not an immature pothead

As the Jets get close to training camp, I am going to examine the roster and give you my top 25 players. Each weekday, we will reveal another person on the list, leading right into camp. I am not including rookies on this list because I do not feel it is possible to fully evaluate them before they play a game.

No. 3: Sheldon Richardson

Last year’s ranking: 2

Position: Defensive end/defensive tackle

Age: 24

How acquired: Selected in the first round of the 2013 Draft

Years left on contract: 2

2015 Salary Cap figure: $2.7 million

Looking back at 2014: The toughest call I had to make in this year’s rankings was whether Richardson or Muhammad Wilkerson deserved to be higher. I gave the edge to Wilkerson because I felt when both players were healthy, Wilkerson was more dominant. But many people I spoke to who cover the team and follow the team closely disagreed with me, and I can see why.

Richardson had a monster sophomore season. When Wilkerson went down with a toe injury late in the season, he was the team’s best player. Richardson finished with 66 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He continued to be a force against the run, but where he took a big leap forward was in his pass rushing. He had eight sacks in 2014, up from 3 ½ in 2013, when he was Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Pro Football Focus ranked him as the second best 3-4 defensive end out of 47 graded. He trailed only superstar J.J. Watt. Richardson and Wilkerson were tied for the No. 1 grade against the run, quite a statement about the Jets’ defensive line. Wilkerson had 32 stops, defined as solo tackles that led to an offensive failure, which was sixth most among defensive ends.

If you wanted to take issue with Richardson, it is over his decision-making. We’ll deal with his off-field issues in the next section. On the field, he had eight penalties last year, the most among 3-4 defensive ends. Not all of those were mental mistakes, but quite a few were. Richardson’s biggest gaffe came in Green Bay when he called for a timeout from the sideline, wiping out a game-tying touchdown pass by Geno Smith. The Packers won the game and the Jets’ season went downhill from that moment.

Outlook for 2015: Richardson’s off-field decision making has become a huge storyline this summer. Richardson is suspended for the first four games of this season after violating the league’s substance abuse policy. A source said he failed for marijuana use. In order to get a suspension, Richardson must have failed multiple tests. This has to be troubling to the Jets. Richardson will be suspended for an entire season if he fails another test.

On a more minor scale, Richardson has created firestorms by what he has said on Twitter and to the media. His behavior wore on the previous coaching staff. It will be interesting to see if Todd Bowles can get him under control.
Once Richardson returns in Week 5, the Jets will be counting on him to be a huge part of what figures to be one of the best defenses in football.

As he enters his third season, no one questions Richardson’s ability. But he needs to mature now and stop damaging himself off the field.

Are Mo and Sheldon that close in ranking? For some reason in my head I have Sheldon as the way more effective player.

Most fans do, but I'm not so sure HC's do. Wilkerson is really an excellent all around player.

I've no idea of the validity of this story. This is the only place I've seen it, so take it for what it's worth.

Jets’ Brandon Marshall Hints He May Have Indulged in Marijuana While in Jamaica

By Michael Terrill @MichaelTerrill on July 26, 2015
Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports
Brandon Marshall
Over the weekend, New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall took part in festivities that involved marijuana in Jamaica. To be more specific, he smelled and witnessed plenty of marijuana being smoke while in attendance at his sister’s wedding. Despite Marshall not stating he took part in the marijuana-smoking experience, the fact that he tweeted about it to the NFL certainly is suspicious.

Machine Marshall ✔@BMarshall
What ull doing? I'm in Jamaica at my sisters wedding and It smells like Denver over here!!! I better not fell my drug test.

For those who may be unaware, being around other people who are in the process of smoking marijuana will not lead to a failed drug test. What will lead to a failed drug test is participating in the act of smoking marijuana. Marshall is either completely unaware of this fact or he is massively paranoid about testing positive for the drug and being suspended by the league.

Since Marshall told the world on Twitter about his Jamaica experience, one can only assume the NFL already has a drug test ready for him. There is a good chance he assumed the same, which explains why he tweeted the following:

Machine Marshall ✔@BMarshall
Dear @NFL there's smoke everywhere in Jamaica. I'm a occasional drinker (wine) red to be exact, but I do not smoke. Please help!!!

Clearly, if Marshall does indeed fail his urine test, the NFL will not feel sorry for him. They will explain that he should have removed himself from the situation, regardless of it being his sister’s wedding.

It is no secret that NFL players smoke marijuana. Not long ago while on Jim Rome on Showtime, former linebacker Scott Fujita estimated that 30 to 50 percent of current players indulge in the drug. Still, rules are rules, which means Marshall is in for what could potentially be a wild experience in the ensuing days.

Thanks for the article. I think it's a load of crap.

He was talking about second hand smoke and how he is smelling weed anywhere. They left off his important tweet that pointed towards that.

Yes, but we know the league doesn't have much of a sense of humor. With the Richarson suspension, we don't need this

Sheldon is supposed to address the media for the first time this Saturday since they announced his suspension. Curious to see what he has to say. He said the right things in statements but now he will be asked questions directly.

Exactly why I don't believe for one second that this will be his last failed drug test.

Arrogance and stupidity are a deadly combination. I hope I'm wrong, I'll be crossing my fingers that I am, all of us will, but this guy has train-wreck written all over him.
Didn't take dumbass very long to make me a prophet, two weeks (after his suspension) to be exact.
