So why the Jets?

Been a jet fan since '79... Came to this country at the age of 6-1/2, March of 77, on a very condensed and populated block in queens with Lots of sport fans - Mostly giant, cowboy, dolphin, raider and steeler fans ( don't remember any jet fans) though there were a lot of met, Yankee and reds fans.
So i took a liking to the steelers and the reds before I could even speak a word of English.

First memory of a football game was at a relatives house on TV watching a huge pile of monstrous people on top of each other fighting for something - I was confused.

At nine years old I went to my first Mets game and met rusty staub, lee mazzilli and richard Todd.
From that day forward I joined the ranks of half the people on my block and became a mets fan and as far as I remember the only JETS fan.
Always hated the dolphins and cowboys and had mixed feelings on the giants (secretly liked the 80s giants) but despised there fans.

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the steelers and reds for they were the first teams that were introduced to me as football and baseball but that was before I understood the sports or English for that matter.

I am a NY JETS Fanatic through the good the bad and the ugly.
I blame Richard Todd for the bad, kotite for the ugly, Sanchez for the buttfumble but then I think of meeting joe klecko and Curtis and I think of the good. I would like to add Bowles and Mac to the good... So far so good! Either way I will always be a loyal jets fan and proud of the jets fan united forum.

i got the yankees & the knicks from my dad.. he loves baseball & likes basketball but only had a passing interest in football..

night yankee games meant me, mom, dad & my brothers were having dinner on the TV tables in the family room..

my poor mother who had no interest in baseball or sports finally decided because she was in a house with nothing but sports hungry males she might as well try to get with the program & did!! mom learned baseball strategy & situational stuff big time & loves the yankees to this day!! she was the first to let me know Yogi had passed..

as far as the jets it was completely my buddy up the street back in early 80's.. much like my mom, mrs. karis was stuck in her house with her husband & 3 sons that absolutely loved another NY team.. in this case it was the jets..

great memories..

Thanks for correcting me.

It was before I was born.

My mother came over from Ireland 1956, and they met in NY in the late 50's. Not sure exactly what year my father came here, must have been '51, and I can't ask him because he's dead. He shared some stories about it and told me that's how he gained citizenship, but I never bothered to pin him down on the dates. The U.S. Army thought enough of his service to give him a Veteran tomb stone with "Korea" on it. I'll take a photo of it next time I'm up there and post it.

My friend, not challenging your word. I actually thought when you made your post you had typo-ed the late 50's and meant the late 40's.

Was just messing with ya. You don't have to post anything to prove your story, Thought it was a great story.

If you want to post some thing because your proud of your Dad. Love to see it

I inherited the "strain".

My father was a great guy. When you look in the dictionary under "Family Man" his picture is there.

Not sure I'll ever forgive him for passing this disease along to me. :)

I have cursed my god father for infecting me with the green and white as well on many Sunday afternoons. Still there is no other. Jets till the coffin.

I have no good excuse why I've followed this team, I doubt if there are sane reasons.
Head coaches rule the NFL and I think the Jets finally got a good one since the last good one, Weeb Eubank.
I'm also holding on for Petty, although he was not my first choice.

my dad was a baseball Giants fan

when they abandoned NY, he waited and became a Mets fan. Taught me the same. Jets were a natural extension.

Other key was Joe Willie. As a little kid, the first football game I recall watching on tv was Namath in the Orange Bowl. I was specially allowed to stay up late. He was something special. He came to the Jets. That was it.

You don't think Parcells was a good one?

And I, on the other hand, have apologized to my son many times for infecting him. Just about every Sunday last year I texted him that I was sorry. He had so many options to choose from. He was born in Georgia, lived in Connecticut and now we are in Illinois. He could have chosen the Falcons, Giants, Patriots, Bears or even the Packers. But thanks to me, he is stuck with the Jets.

Although he knows that he would have been on his own for college had he chosen the Pats.

LOL, now that's a good one. I think if my son would have ever become a Pats fan I would have disowned him all together.

I always tell people that my Dad got the ultimate revenge on me for everything bad I did as a kid...he made me a Jets and a Mets fan, and that's a cross I've had to bear ever since. (Actually included that in his eulogy.)

My son was born in '99 and I wanted so bad for my son not to have to endure the hardship I went through, so when he was really young I shielded him from the Mets/Jets and he naturally latched on to the teams his friends here in CT liked - the Pats and Yankees (Little front-running bastards!). I was actually OK with it.

But, he gradually matured and came to his senses and by the time he was 10 or so, he came around. He's 16 now and bleeds green and white (and blue and orange).

Glad I didn't force him - but also glad he came to his senses!

LOL, I hear you man and glad he did also. Guess I handled it wrong but I couldn't take that case, LOL. My dumbass became a Jets fan on my own in 82 so I couldn't allow my son to go the Pats route, just couldn't do it. Any team except the Pats, Giants and Dolphins and I'm cool with it. He actually became a Colts fan with the Manning and Faulk connection way back. Pissed me off but I dealt with it. He is still a Colts fan to this day so I gotta give him props for no being a bandwagon rider. He clams he's a die-hard and I'm leary on that and tease him quite often but he stays true to them so I guess he is.

Well, at east he has stayed true - I respect that.

My friends and I have what we call the "Rule of 10". Whatever team you root for when you are ten years old, you are stuck with for the rest of your life.

LOL

I just realized, after I liked your post, that your father came here in the late 50's, then fought in the Korean War? Hmmmmmm. What's wrong with this picture?
Perhaps his father was like mine and SERVED in Korea, (1946 Panama, post WW II, in my case), but AFTER the shooting war was over. There was still a lot of DMZ violations and bullets flying for a decade after the actual UN "Conflict" ended and his father could well have been involved in any of them.
