Tentative Thumbs Up for Fitz

Will Ryan Fitzpatrick be ready to play Sunday at Houston after last Friday's surgery? The QB and his head coach are among those with tentative thumbs up on that question.

"Everything went fine," Todd Bowles updated reporters today on the status of Fitzpatrick's left thumb.

Will he be able to participate in Wednesday's practice at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center? "We'll see. I'm hopeful he will be."

And what about Sunday against the Texans? Will he be starting?

"I'm hopeful, yeah," said the coach.

Fitzpatrick had no comment, since he was home still resting from the procedure to repair his left thumb ligament. But he was optimistic from consulting with the team's doctors and trainers beforehand that he would be able to continue to play as he had been since injuring the thumb early in Game 7 at Oakland.

It's all a matter of dealing with any lingering pain Fitzpatrick might have from the surgery, Bowles said, as well as showing no dropoff in taking snaps under center from Nick Mangold or handing the ball off despite the wrapped, braced, gloved left hand that he'd been playing with the past two games.

Of course, the Jets need contingency plans. If Fitzpatrick can't practice any day this week, "he's not playing," Bowles said, adding that he's got confidence in calling on Geno Smith to start or play against the Texans.

"I'm fine with Geno starting," Bowles said. "He's made great progress, he learned a lot under Ryan, he threw the ball well at Oakland for the most part. We'll move forward."

But none of that will even start to be known until Wednesday, when the bearded one is expected to return to the facility and head out for practice.

I know many people are down on Fitz but he has been a warrior for the team. I'm very proud to have him lead this team. I feel like we are never down with him as qb and he will continue to battle and put us into games. Could be a lot worse....

I agree with you but I don't see it going anywhere. There has to be a purpose to him being our QB but I think that might be over. He deserves the next start but if they lose then we need to rethink what the end game is.

much like here, over the last few days i've heard a vocal minority of fitzpatrick doubters on others jets boards..

but more importantly, fitzpatrick clearly the support & respect of teammates & coaching staff..

the only way i see fitzpatrick benched is if we are eliminated from a playoff spot & the coaches want to get an early look at petty..

And I would be okay with that if that is the case. If eliminated , having a look at Petty could make the remaining games worth watching.

Fitz has definitely earned the respect of his team and I don't mind if he's back next year competing for a starter role.

that is just awesome!! fitzpatrick is leading (obviously) & young petty is a receptive understudy..

Every video I've seen of Fitz in practice at NYjets.com Petty seems attached at the hip to him. They enter the field together, stretch together, Pety is always in the back ground when Fitz is throwing, and they leave the field together.

I'm really starting to get some good vibes about Petty. With his natural talent, if some of Fitz's football smarts rub off on him, we just might have something

if nothing else it sounds like the kid "gets it!!"

that, with legitimate talent is promising, especially in the 4th round..

we'll see..

Keep in mind that Petty had a great season in 2013. A lot of the NCAA sites were debating who would be the first pick in the draft, Winston, or Petty.

During the first game of the season Petty broke 2 small bones in his upper back. He missed the next game, then played the rest of the season, unknown to most people, in tremendous pain. One game he would look like the 2013 Petty, and the next would look off. He got the label of inconsistent, and fell to the 4th.

Certainly not saying he is a sure lock, but IMO he has the talent to have been a 1st round pick.

i would think it's more about the wound opening up & the issue of infection..

fitzpatrick has clearly shown he's able to play in pain..
