The Back-up Quarterback battle: Bryce Petty vs Geno Smith

Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson reports Geno Smith is clearly ahead of Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty.


It makes sense that a 29-game starter is ahead of a raw second-round rookie and a sophomore with zero NFL snaps, but it is important to note considering the Jets' quarterback situation. If Hack or Petty could show enough in camp to earn the No. 2 job, the Jets would be able to move on from Smith instead of potentially cutting one of their young projects. With neither making up any ground right now, however, the Jets will either have to keep four quarterbacks or cut Petty at the end of camp.

Probably all a moot point. In order for there to be a QB controversy at back up, petty had to make a step up this season. If anything, 4 practices in, he seems to have regressed which will get him unemployed if he doesn't pick it up very soon.

Another 2-5th round QB next season?

Jets should draft a QB in first 3 rounds of the Draft until they get it right. I hope they take the best Player on the board in first & second round & if its a QB take him & if not Draft a QB in 3rd round. 1965 is a very long time to miss drafting a great QB. We seem to pass on them...83 Dolphins took Dan M. who would have won us at least 2 Super Bowls with our Defense & talented WR-RB-O Line. Made me sick still. Oh well we still got Namath & if he wasnt busted up from College he would have won us a few SB's also. Namath was incredible passer in Ala when he could step into his passes & then Knee injury. Go back and watch his passing then & imagine no knee injury on Jets.

If Petty doesn't make a dramatic turn around from what he's doing right now, they won't waste a roster spot on him. Probably take another QB 2-5th round in next year's draft.

He's missing his window. smith had a very bad practice Saturday, and Meh yesterday. Petty could have closed the gap between them, and didn't.

He's got to give them a reason to tie up a roster spot.

They will take the guy they see on an upswing and not even reaching his ceiling yet to the guy they think may have peaked.... Based on your statement that's how I see them going...

I agree that anything close to tie, definitely goes to their draft pick. I really like Petty. He make some major improvements in camp last year. To the point that they trusted him enough to be back up in the first 3 regular season games.

I really believe that they hoped he would have made some gains in the off season so they could anoint him the back up, and move smith for a bag of rocks. Petty had rough OTA's, and mini camp. I really hoped the month between mini camp would give him the opportunity to settle down. Four days into camp his play is being compared to Hack's, who is playing like an inaccurate rookie. Which is to be expected.

What I don't understand is petty is having accuracy problems in camp. Accuracy has never really been his problem. As a matter of fact in some of the draft guides he was described as Naturally accurate on the plus side.

I don't know if he has changed his mechanics, and affected his accuracy, or he is choking under pressure. What ever it is, he better fix it now, or he will miss a sensational opportunity.

I think so. Cutting Petty after only one season n and a tc, coming out of a single read offense would be pure stupidity. You have to give the guy time to develop.

IMO, there's only two options open to Mac. Fitz and Hack's roster spots are guaranteed. From there you either carry 4 OR cut Geno. I'm hoping like hell for the latter, but it not be feasible?

i don't think this regime will cut smith unless petty starts playing like this is his second training camp, not his first.. IMO, it would be ass backwards to do so..

it was mentioned yesterday that Petty is getting considerably more snaps then Hack. Think they are giving Petty every chance to sink or swim early before deciding what to do with the 4QB situation.

Right now Petty looks like he is swimming with a cinder block around his neck

Petty is gonna get that long hard look but I don't think he is in danger of getting cut unless they feel he has digressed.... Everyone has said he could be a 3-4 year project... So I don't see them cutting bait with him after year 2

Because for all of Geno's faults, he MAY be the best on the roster besides Fitz. As sad as that is to say, and trust me I am just as disgusted b by that as you, he could be our best option for a backup. But really this is about winning, the cs has to maximize the teams hances to win every game possible. Geno, for all of his faults, might give the Jets their best chance to win football games in the event Fitz cannot start.

i really hope petty allows himself a deep breath & starts playing up to his ability.. if he can put together a strong preseason, the brutal start to this training camp will become a distant memory..

i don't have much reason to believe this is going to happen (at this point anyway) but you never know..
