The Back-up Quarterback battle: Bryce Petty vs Geno Smith

It's all about progress.... Rodgers was a backup for years with No exp.... Brady was a backup year 2 with no experience...... If mac and Bowles are comfortable with Petty as the backup than so am I... But like I said earlier we will know how the FO and coaching staff feel in 40 days....
Why wouldn't they just send Hack to PS?? According to many on this board, nobody wanted him anyway.
Because many expert Front Office guys had him marked as a late 2nd rd pick and he would be picked up immediately

Little bit of a difference between a 2nd round pick, and picking him up as a FA
He did it last year on opening day. With the final cuts he chopped off Josh Johnson and Matt FLynn in favor of a then Rookie Bryce Petty.
Bowles is very ballsy to say the least. If he feels comfortable with Petty at number two and he's earned it, why take that opportunity away from the kid?
In saying so, if Geno plays exceptional, then the job remains his. Nothing from now until week one is by default.
Also, if so many are convinced that Petty is a goner (PURE SPECULATION), then why is he still on the roster.
I honestly expect Bryce to step up his game as Geno Smith (i know i might sound crazy) will bring his and heres why on #7:
*Never has he ever had to fight for his job. He's climbing up hill. He's auditioning for a job in '17 and also wants to prove to this current Jets organization that the previous regime had it right.
*He knows the cards are stacked against him. The locker room is ecstatic that Fitz is back and that also means that they're ecstatic that Geno isn't starting. His actions has to earn the respect of his peers god forbid (I MEAN REALLY GOD FORBID) Fitz goes down.
Also,
It's easy to say day one of training camp that Petty is a goner, but he's on the team for a reason. This organization drafted him and they see potential in him. Of course he's going to throw picks in-camp and pre-season. All QB's do. Should we penalize him for it? No way, Mac stated it two aprils ago: hes a developmental player. The Jets are doing the right thing in grooming him. Nice and slow.
The Drafting of Christian Hackenberg isn't a detriment to Bryce at all as some are suggesting. Why would Mike place all his eggs in one basket? Isn't it better for two young studs battling it out in 2017. Hell what if one gets injured, atleast we have a young back up to step right in that knows the scheme.
I just dont get the notion of "YIKES!, how can we keep 4 QBs?!". Its simple. History has taught us Jets fanatics that you can never have enough of them, especially learning the system fresh from the start rather than scrambling to get one off the street.
*1999-Vinny went down and Parcells traded for Rick Mirer who had no clue what the NFL was all about.
*2003-Chad Pennington goes down in pre-season and so did our hopes for that campaign.
*2005, Both Chad Pennington and Jay Fielder go down in the same game / placed on I.R.
So yea, if Geno shines this pre season, he remains number two, while we're still grooming Bryce and Hack. I'll be more than fine carrying 4QBs my friends.

I'm pretty pissed about Geno being pissed about the Fitz signing. He's had the chance to channel his negative energy into his play, and has not done the job.

in all fairness, smith just isn't good in front of microphones.. could he have chosen his words more diplomatically, yes.. but i'm not going to beat the hell out of him on that.. from all reports, he practiced well today & fitzpatrick is re-signed..
I hope so. I hope Geno plays very well, either as insurance for Fitz or to drive up his value. The better he plays, the better for the Jets.
if we can get a bag of rocks for him, i would be thrilled..
that said, if smith has truly matured, good for him & i mean that sincerely..
I was just wondering because it seems like everyone said Hack sucked and shouldn't have been picked until late rounds. By that logic, nobody would go after a late round PS player.
It was a harmless interview. He should be pissed off and try to prove the Jets wrong.

Bowles did it last year on opening day as well, he could have kept on veteran to back up Fitz on either Josh Johnson or Matt Flynn but he chose to stay with Bryce. So this whole notion of giving up and waving a white flag if Petty indeed beats out Geno is not true at all.
Let this competition bring out the best in both players and let the one who EARNED IT (something Geno hasn't done as all his professional career-all has been by default) back up Ryan.
Everyone? Kiper had him going one pick after the Jets, at 52, right after the Jets took Connor Cook. Draft Countdown had him as second or third round. NFL.com had a mock with Chad Reuter which had him going to Houston in the first.
I really don't get this idea where "everyone" said he sucked.
I liked the pick, but many here hated it and other people said he was too early.

i think it had much more to do with, some liked hackenberg a lot & some literally didn't believe he should be drafted..
i can't ever remember the draft "experts" opinions being so wildly opposite of each others on a prospect.. can you??
all that said, there's not much more to do now then hope what maccagnan sees in him eventually translates to the field..
