Todd Bowles: Sam Darnold 'did everything he was asked to do'

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Rookie Sam Darnold is the apparent front-runner in the New York Jets' quarterback competition, but coach Todd Bowles isn't tipping his hand.

"I have a good feeling for where we want to go and what we need to do," Bowles said Friday night after a 22-16 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. "We'll sit down and discuss it as a coaching staff and move forward from there."

Darnold was solid in his second consecutive start, receiving a positive review from Bowles. Playing with the starters into the third quarter, the first-round pick completed 8 of 16 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

He orchestrated a 75-yard touchdown drive on his first possession, but the Darnold-led offense went three-and-out on five of its next six series, not counting a kneel-down at the end of the half. His only glaring mistake was an intentional grounding penalty.

"He didn't turn the ball over, and he did everything he was asked to do," Bowles said.

Teddy Bridgewater (11-for-15, 104 yards) came off the bench in the third quarter, played one series with the starting offensive line and finished up with the backups.

"I thought Teddy did a good job, as well," Bowles said. "We've got three good quarterbacks. I've been saying that."

Incumbent Josh McCown didn't play for the second straight week.

The Jets close out the preseason on Thursday night at the Philadelphia Eagles. Bowles hinted he could play his starters for a short time, but he was noncommittal.

Bowles said he won't announce his quarterback decision until after the final preseason game. From all indications, Darnold, drafted third overall, is the favorite. He hasn't put up big numbers -- only 244 passing yards in roughly six quarters -- but he has just one interception.

"Consistency is the biggest thing for me and, so far, I've been really consistent," said Darnold, who threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Terrelle Pryor on Friday.

"I'm not here to say that I've won the job or lost the job," Darnold added. "I'm just going to play consistent football, continue to put my best foot forward for the team, continue to be a good leader and really just be myself. At the end of the day, it's a coach's decision."

Darnold's biggest thrill occurred before the game, when he met Jets legend Joe Namath for the first time. The Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback spoke to all three quarterbacks on the field, later saying in a halftime interview that Darnold's first-half performance was the best he had seen from a rookie in a long time.

"He's just a great guy," Darnold said of Namath. "He's very charismatic. Obviously, there's a lot of personality there, and it was awesome to be able to talk to him a little bit.

"It was cool to meet Broadway Joe, knowing his history with this franchise."

When I watch Darnold, I see the “IT” people often refer to.

We’re not going to be duped like we were with Sanchez. Darnold is the real deal.

I will say it again...Thank you Cleveland Browns for being the Browns and taking Mayfield. And thank you New York Jets for not being the New York Jets and taking Sam Darnold.

Seriously. When the Jets were on the clock, I had visions of the Commissioner saying “Kyle Brady... Jeff Lageman...Blair Thomas”.

Not this time. The Jets nailed it. And it looks like they nailed it with Adams and Leo, too. The tide is turning my friends.

williams is a good player.. tries hard.. seems like a nice young man.. but none of those things make him an impact player or have hiim living up to draft position.. certainly not to this point..

the adams thing is interesting to me.. we NYers have always been known to have excellent bull shit meters.. by far the most impressive thing the kid has done since being drafted is self promote himself.. constantly..

does he even have an interception yet?? hell, he didn't even outplay maye last season.. absolutely don't get it..

adams told any & every football fan listening last year, he was going to essentially "revolutionize" the position.. not a great start for a guy that is not even a special athlete.. certainly not on the level of the guys he declared he will inevitably be better than..

I feel the same way about both of these players. So far both are overrated based on their production and draft position. Neither are very impactful so far.

Leo was ranked as the 10th best 3-4 defensive end by Pro Football Focus, grading out “well above average” in both run support and pass rushing. 12 sacks in 3 seasons for a DE who doesn’t play the 4-3.

Jamal Adams started 16 games and had 83 total tackles, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and 6 pass defenses for a safety. Didn’t record an INT.

Sounds like two ascending young players to me.

maye had 79 total tackles (without playing in the box) & 2 interceptions & we got him in the 2nd..

if adams is ascending, what is maye doing??

Adams had a good rookie year. I realize that for some, unless his stats are off the charts from the get-go, he’s considered a disappointment. But he’s in charge of that secondary and his leadership is unquestionable.

That doesn’t show up on a stat sheet.

he did.. it's just maye had a better one..

you use stats as the backbone of what williams & adams are, yet i point to the 2nd rounders numbers (not the top 10 pick guys) & crickets..

I wasn’t arguing against Maye. He was taken near the top of the 2nd round. The expectation is that a player taken that high should be good. He lived up to the expectations as much as Adams. I don’t think it’s an either/or argument.

Adams gets scrutinized more because of where he was drafted, but both are good players. I think Adams leadership and ability to call out secondary assignments during a game makes him a more important player to this team. Contrary to what some fans are saying around here, it’s not just a bunch of bark. He’s respected as a young leader of this defense.

I agree JG....we need to see more this is the year they should leap ahead.

i agree if a player is picked at the top of the 2nd round, the expectations are you drafted a good player..

but if
you're picked at the top of the 1st round, the expectations are you drafted an elite player.. or at least a very good one who may develop into an elite player.. no??

BTW, the internet is a big place.. you might be surprised with what many jet fans that don't post here think about what adams is, or isn't as a top 10 pick..

i think williams, for the most part, is what he is.. maybe the light turns on in year 4?? honestly, my belief is he just not explosive enough to become an elite player..

at least with adams only going into his 2nd year, there's more reason for optimism of growth.. but i'm not sure if he's explosive enough either to be an elite player either..

Again, I agree. I did see CC leave AZ & become an elite pass rusher under a new system.....but i do agree

Correct, the expectation is that you may eventually have an elite player. But calling him a disappointment after a good rookie season seems a little harsh...no???

The internet is a big place? You don’t say.

Here’s what so crazy about all of this, as good as Darnold has played, Bridgewater has played better. Don’t know if I should say significantly better but noticiably better would be a better word for it. Bridgewater has pretty much been perfect this preseason and I don’t think anyone can argue that. Only difference is Darnold has been right on his heels and that’s very impressive for a 21 year old rookie. With that being the case, you can’t argue with them starting the rookie. Especially with this being a non playoff team this year. Now if this was a potential or guaranteed playoff team then you have to go with Bridgewater but it’s not, so Darnold it is I guess. You gotta love this because the Jets have never been in a position like this. A 39 year old decent QB, a 25 year old franchise caliber QB and a 21 year old franchise caliber QB. When the fuck did something like this ever happen to the Jets, am I dreaming or what here???
