Tough times are ahead

Some years ago, the Jets started 1-3. The first part of their schedule was fairly brutal. They lost a game they should have won at home against Cincinnati and were outright spanked by two good teams in the other two losses. The QB, a veteran of over 50 starts was never very good, prone to turnovers and if you were a foreigner at your first football game, you would have thought his name was "Boo". The coach seemed clueless and did not inspire much hope for change.

The season was over, or so it seemed.

Then they started winning. The QB, for the first time in his career, looked like a quality NFL starter. The coach had them prepared for every game, both mentally and with the game plan. It was like watching a completely different team with a completely different QB.

All of a sudden, we were going to Shea late in the year to host the division powerhouse that would tell what kind of team they had. With time running out, the QB led them down towards the closed end and hit his TE for the winning TD. That moment defined the team, not the early embarrassing losses.

That was 1981. Several weeks later, we all enjoyed a classic playoff game.

Now I'm not saying that this is what will happen this year, but I am saying that perhaps it is not yet time to give it up. Oh, and BTW, the current division powerhouse comes to New Jersey about the same time on the schedule.

I'm not giving up, but after watching the last two games, there's a lot to be concerned about. We look very average. We'll probably beat the Browns and Dolphins. But we're not in the same league as the Steelers and Patriots with Brady.

This season is done as far as I know.

Sorry for for such a gloomy post.

Steelers will beat the Jets by 4 TD's.
But the line is only +6 1/2

I think my ass is still frozen from the metal bleacher seats.

Remember the Panthers are also 1-3 and we have the harder schedule. Arizona is better than their record and is going to punish us? Couldn't you use that logic for the Jets?
We will learn a lot about Bowles and gameplan the next 2 weeks.

I really think after being a fan of this team for a lifetime they have given me some type of bipolar disorder.

To summarize :
A)The Steelers defense is great, they shut down the Chiefs
The Jets struggled last two weeks but I think they can play better. Jets 49 Steelers 0

Then the next day:

B) Well, I woke up alive this morning, so thats nice. I remember loving football. Pittsburg 60 Jets -3

I had long thought that this season would be determined by the first seven games. If the Jets somehow managed to get to 4-3, they were a legit contender. If they got to 3-4, then they probably would have been right where I thought, and with an easier schedule the second half, would likely have finished between 8-8 and 10-6.

Right now, 1-5 absolutely looks possible, and 2-4 likely.

I just don't want some meaningless run in the second half of the season to:

1. Keep Fitz from letting a Petty or someone get action, and
2. Ruin a perfectly good draft slot.

My guess, though, is the Jets get to about 2-5, which takes them out of contention, and then gets on a roll and finishes 8-8, just enough to keep from drafting high or from getting Petty or Hack some game time experience as they futilely chase a wild card that never materializes.

Steelers will beat the Jets by 4 TD's.

Will be much worse with Geno at the helm.
Lets not forget that Geno has had 42 turnovers in 31 games.

Not justifying Fitz at all. Just that both of our top QB's are pure 'Basura' at this junctior. Best Option for this season so that it doesnt turn into a complete waste is playing Bryce once he's 100% to see what he has leading into the '17 campaign.

Why even come across playing Smith? The guy wil use the platform as an open audition for clubs around the league to pick him up next season, even as a back up when he bolts after this year.
Worst thing other than playing Fitz is playing Geno this year.

You, of course, are painting the worst picture you can possibly paint, which would be quintessential Jets.

A lot of people; fans, media, players, coaches, owners, even GM's who should know better, believe the worst thing you can be is awful, like 1-15 awful, but its not true, the truth is, the worst thing you can be in professional football is mediocre. Awful gives you a better chance to build a legit SB contender, and faster, because it gives you the advantage of high draft picks, not only in the first round which increases your odds at landing a franchise QB or getting an impact player at another premium position like left-tackle or edge rusher, but it also has you picking at the top of the second round and every other round, which should not be discounted ... and it also frees you up to trade aging vets for more picks, the way Jimmy Johnson did when he took over an aging Cowboys roster.

Thats how the Cowboys went from 1-15 to Dynasty in a relatively short time-span.

Thats very hard to duplicate when you are 8-8

I wholeheartedly agree with this. The teams that have been on top a lot have also bottomed out. If you are middling, it's tough to move up or down. You're always stuck in that 6-10 win range, never being awful, never being great.

The Cowboys bottomed out between being on top. The 49ers. Steelers, Packers, etc.

Exactly right, the system is setup so its easier to go from the out-house to the penthouse, then it is to go from a third floor apartment to the penthouse. The system is almost designed to help the poor get rich, and to make it more difficult for the working to middle class to breakout of their current situation, they need a lot more luck and have less margin for error.

Well Fitz has had 27 TO's in 20 games here which is basically the exact same per game. Geno at least has some arm talent and can run.

The problem for us has been that our coaches, usually being in the hot seat after throwing playoff chances away in the first half, start fighting and clawing for keeping their jobs, and what do you know, we win some meaningless games at the end JUST ENOUGH to ruin a strong draft position. I absolutely HATE that, and it just takes the life out of any realistic hopes for a meaningful turnaround the following season. My fear is that this will happen AGAIN this year, especially after we likely go to 1-7 or 2-6, and we put together a few masking-the-problems wins that will take us out of contention for the best talent coming out of college.

Perhaps we should follow the model of teams like the Steelers, who have success in large part because of their tremendous stability.

Jets fans are always looking for an excuse to fire everyone.

The only way thats not a bad thing is if Petty is the reason we start winning games after a disastrous start. If he is the reason we botched a high draft pick, you can live with it because the upside means we probably found our long-term answer at the most important position on the field.

However, if that happens because Sucky Fitzsuckin gets past the tough part of the schedule and starts getting fat on weaker teams, knowing full well he is not even going to be here next year, then there is no silver lining to botching the high draft pick, its just typical same old Jets.

Thats another reason why we should yank Fitz and make the move to Petty sooner rather than later, especially if we get thru the toughest part of the schedule and our season is toast. Don't give Fitz an opportunity to wreck our draft position too, after he wrecked our season. If we're going to lose the high draft pick, let it be because we found the answer at QB.

I am in agreement. I definitely wanna see Petty show what he's got in regular-season competitive environment, and if he starts winning, we all will be loving it. I am just hoping we get to that point much sooner than later during season, so we can adequately plan the QB situation next year.

It's Petty if he shows he can play like I think he can... If he doesn't then it's Hackenbergs shot... I don't think we will be in a position to get any of the QBs that might be in the draft next year.. I Say might cause Chad Kelley is the only senior QB looking like a late Rd1 pick most likely Rd 2 pick.... The other guys Bray Kaaya, DeSean Kizer and DeShaun Watson are all underclassmen

I dont know man. C'mon brother, we're talking about Geno here. I guess we will have to see what transpires.

Personally, i'd rather see what Petty has when he's healthy.
