I think, wait I know, that attitude will fail in NY. Give me a top OT over Mayfield. Give me Darnold or Rosen over a top OT. And we both know stats in college don't mean much in the NFL. I don't want the Jets desperation for a QB to take this guy with what will be a top 10 pick. One thing I do know is one of us will be right about Mayfield.
It's not about being right or wrong, Tebow? It's about making this team better. You're preaching to the choir about OL needs. How many times have I shit on Mac for taking Darron Lee and not consummating the trade to get Laremy Tunsil?
I know OL is a dire need. I know whatever this OL has managed to do this season is 100% smoke and mirrors.
However, Mac is the kind of guy that takes whatever he sees for BPA when he picks. He also stays away from picking an OL when he feels the crop is weak? That's why he didn't take an OL in the last draft. There wasn't much talent there.
The 2018 has a wealth of talent at QB. Much more so than last years draft, at least that's what I think Mac feels? He's going to strike while the iron is hot. I doubt the iron will get much hotter than it is right now? You could make a case for MANY QB's to take in this draft.
In regards to Mayfield specifically, I could be wrong of course? I'm not trying to be some arrogant twit with the Mayfield talk? I just know Mac has wasted mid round picks on QB's in the past and none of them have worked. I believe in this draft if he wants a top notch QB he'll probably have to take one in the 1st round. I believe Mayfield is a great pick for us for many reasons:
1) I think he's top 10 in talent, but because of his size he's going to slip. That automatically makes him a bit of a good value if he goes after the first 10 picks in the draft.
2) I think he WILL slide in the draft? I'm not sure how much? Like I said, my bet has him winning the Heisman. He could even still possibly win a national championship?
3) Rosen is another guy I really believe in, but for Mac to get him he's going to have to trade multiple picks and that means no decent additions to the OL after that trade is done? No blue chippers in the 2nd round?
4) I do NOT believe there's any decent solutions through FA. I've seen Cousins play and I like him but not enough to pay big bucks for him and hang all of the Jets SB hopes on? I like Brees, but I think he's over the hill. Same with Smith.
5) Mac has TONS of money available to be used. Mac does not need to take the chance on an OL in the draft if he doesn't want to. He can sign PROVEN players in FA. That's what I would want for OL. Sign a proven veteran that can act as a leader among the offense and lead by example. I've never forgotten the positive impact a guy like Alan Faneca had on the entire Jets OL back in 2009? In the 2009 playoffs, that OL entered the "zone" and played out of their fucking minds. I believe Faneca was the guy that made the rest of the OL think that they could do that? So I would rather go FA to get a 6true leader along the OL.
We then get to stay where we are and take Mayfield? Like I said, I don't think the Jets will be picking in the top 10? If they are I suppose that's great and leaves Mac with even more options. But if we do pick somewhere in the range of 10 to 15? Mayfield would be excellent value there.
I really don't think Mayfield will go top 10? His height will scare a lot of GM's...............
