FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Chan Gailey sounded like a man who doesn't expect to be back with the New York Jets.

In his final news conference of the season, the Jets' offensive coordinator, who turns 65 next week, said he still enjoys coaching. But he stopped short of saying he wants to coach the Jets in 2017.

"I've always loved to coach, I’ve always loved to do that," he said Thursday. "I think it’s in my blood. I think it’ll be there until I go to the grave."

Asked specifically he wants to return to the Jets' staff, Gailey replied, "I said I love football and that I love to coach. I always love to coach. That’s all I said."

He described this year as "unsettling," the most difficult season in his coaching career. Maybe he already knows he will be fired. Or maybe he's planning to retire.

If Todd Bowles survives the season, which is expected, he will make changes to his staff. Count on it. Fair or not, a team that endures this type of season usually shakes up the staff. Gailey has presided over one of the worst units in the league, so he could be the sacrificial lamb even though the defensive performance has been more egregious than that of the offense.

A year ago, the Jets were 10th (total yards) and 11th (scoring) in the offensive rankings. This season, they're 25th and 30th, respectively. They've been held to six or fewer points in four games, the most in the league.

It's wrong to say it's Gailey's fault. He has started three different quarterbacks (none of whom has played well), he lost wide receiver Eric Decker early in the year and his offensive line is down to only one original starter. It's bleak.

Gailey was lured out of retirement by Bowles in January of 2015, and his first season as the coordinator was fantastic. Reunited, Gailey and Ryan Fitzpatrick formed a smart and seasoned playcaller-quarterback tandem. Fitzpatrick set the franchise record with 31 touchdown passes, but he has bottomed out this year.

"Everybody’s physical skills wane with years once you reach your peak," Gailey said of Fitzpatrick. "He still has lots of skills. Are they what they were the first time I saw him? No, they’re not."

Some might be wondering the same thing about Gailey.

"I probably didn’t get totally dumb in one year," he said. "You have to keep up. You have to change. You have to adjust. I think we’ve done that fairly well through the years. How do you know? You think so, but you don’t know."

He was good last year and awful this year. He is and always has been pretty average as an OC.

his game plan can be effective "IF" he has a QB that isn't a risk taker... Meaning a QB that plays within the system and doesn't always chuck it into triple and quadruple coverage so he can target his buddies instead of spreading it around to the truly open targets...

"IF" he does return, there won't be Fitzpatrick to soil the game plan and allow the offense to feature all the weapons not just WR1 & WR2 whom are both unlikely to return (cap casualties)...

I think Gailey is a good OC, hopefully he will return next season(assumimg TB is back). The offense wasn't as good this season do mainly to poor perfomance by the players, especially the QB.

Latest report from Bleacher Report is that Gailey will not be back.

I have no problem with that move, but what about Kacy Rodgers? You cannot tell me he had a good year with this defense. Other than Leo, this entire defense stunk.

I'm with you. It should be Rodgers being talked about getting the boot.

Kind of saddened by this news. Gailey is a good offensive coordinator and is hardly the blame. I hope this doesn't set back Hackenberg

He has to be part of the blame. Nobody is blameless on this sinking ship of an organization.

Rodgers has to be gone. If he is not fired then I will need a safe space and a coloring book. He is not my DC. He is not my DC . He is not my DC!!

Gailey with all the talent with 3 wr's-& 2 finesse RB's & good O Line did fall short. Gailey calling wrong plays & not knowing the Down is awful. Not using TE's in any part of the Offense except as a Lineman is also awful. Not developing our QB's in any way is Pathetic. Not being on the field to know whats happening with his Players & why it isnt working is awful. Sending Plays for Fitz knowing its waay beyond his skill is awful. Shoot Fitz is Gailey developed QB from Bills...LMFAO. Need I go on? Far more awful Gailey mistakes. Now Jets must get a QB & rehaul the Defense bad attitude by cutting good top players who quit playing having to be on the field all the time from Gaileys awful play calling.

Cant blame Gailey for all! Bowles should have made Gailey be on the field so he could question his play calling. I dont know if Jets can come back from this complete awful GM-HC-OC-DC situation. When Players QUIT & dont care is very bad sign. Richardson in a contract season where rookies playing their best for a contract & he isnt giving any effort! Thats bad folks & time to clean entire staff from GM on down. If Woody doesnt? Jets will fall back to laughing stock of NFL & joke of NFL & teams taking cheap hits on our players. Remember that before Rex?

This is why I'm not spending one penny on Jets in any way. No Direct TV NFL Package, no flying & hotel to east coast to watch Jets,No buying or WEARING Jets gear or buying memorabilia. JETS are an utter mess from GM Drafting like Idzik & HC & OC-DC allowing workers"Players" to not work hard & show up to work. Thats total disrespect of the ENTIRE COACHING STAFF. Only way to fix that? CLEAN HOUSE

Masterful move by Bowles, throw his own guys under the bus and keep your job. Does anyone respect that POS?

Considering Woody wont be in charge and handed everything off to his brother, no wonder the organization is Keeping Bowles. There is absolutley no accountability from the top and it trickles all the way down.

This whole thought process of Bowles getting rid of his coaching staff after realizing Woody wont be there convinces me the only one that will be released is Chan.
Bowles wont only get the '17 campaign...but also the '18, '19 and '20 seasons until Woody finally comes back to football operations.

Bowles has two years remaining on his contract, so basically how he and the team does next season will determine if he is here long term... The final year of a coaches contract means squat...

As for Chris taking over, is so the President N.G. doesn't assume full control, and do the unthinkable and sell Woody's team... Chris will have the final decision on any big moves, especially if there is a disconnect with the front office and the general manager...

But have to think Maccagnan is here for the long term which will be interesting to see how this plays out...

So looks like McCoy has been fired! Do we expect/hope that we will move quickly and oust Gailey and get him in??

I don't think Gailey is a bad OC, we had the #1 red zone offense in 2015. If Bowles wants a new OC thats fine. If he is being pressured by management I have a problem with that. The HC should pick his own staff.

Have to agree with this. But what amazes me is Woody's decision to allow the one guy that was responsible for ALL of he CS appointments to stay? I'm not sure I have any confidence in this ownership?? Do you?

Gailey was bad this year and if Woody tells TB his job is safe but things have to change, well maybe he had no choice.... Personally I am ok with the firinig of Gailey... Why? He wasn't very creative ... Fact is even last year Fitz threw 16 Ints, Marshaall and Decker won the one on one battles all the time, Fitz had something like 20 passes that were grades out as interceptable throws that the D dropped... which was 3 times higher than the next QB's, not creative in the running game, no use of the TE...

Sorry but Gailey's deficiencies were covered up by a lot of luck last year.... Fire him now... and Kacy Rogers too. His defensive scheme is awful... Sign Mike McCoy as OC and Gus Bradley as DC...
