If Lawrence is available you take him. It's a no brainers. Hes already what it was hoped Darnold could eventually become. On his rookie contract you build around him and have the opportunity this off season to add quality FAs at a discount.
As for Sam, he's an off season trade. Hope he brings a second round pick to add to the mix but that's a little high for him.
From a clean pocket this year, Darnold has produced the third-worst passing grade in the league (60.3). And when filtering that to just his true clean dropbacks — that is, passes from a clean pocket with no play action, screen, RPO or quick throw — it gets even worse. He has thrown a quarterback-fault incompletion on 30.6% of those throws in 2020, the worst rate in the NFL and more than double the NFL average (13.5%). Sadly his unwillingness to change his footwork and mechanics have made him at best a reclamation project. Gase and Douglas may have made him worse, a bust.

Wouldn’t you if the Jets had the #1 pick? I sure as hell would.
Hard to blame him if he did, but I doubt he will. He just got engaged and will be looking for a payday and not the chance that he gets injured. The Jets need to put their best foot forward and pay whatever it takes to get the best HC available. No more screwing around with the Gase's of the coaching world.

Gotta resist the temptation to fall in love with Sam again if he starts to show something with an intact WR corp in the coming weeks. I saw the difference Perriman made just in creating space and stretching the field.

Look at it like this we are invested to Sam for now, there will always be that next great QB like Arch Manning who is arguably right now on par to be better than both uncles Eli & Peyton... We are in a rebuilding mode, seems like almost a decade of the same rebuild but reality is we are not ready for a new young gun slinger to come in and be destroyed because this team has so many needs... Most could be short term rentals from free agency but we keep saying that and we never develop the replacements maybe we focus on the draft to fill the holes then worry then the next great possible QB to draft...
Jury still out on rookie RB La'Mical Perine and what type of role he will have in the backfield... But we also found possibly that change of pace back in claiming Ty Johnson a second year speed back... Who knows these two may be the tag team moving forward which both are 22 years old...
Chris Herndon, most would of said he is a true No. 1 tight end but he has been worse then sub par so far this season... Ryan Griffin is no better, and Daniel Brown is a free agent... Trevon Wesco is more a blocking fullback that on occasion can run a route in zone coverage to catch maybe a pass a game... Kyle Pitts is arguably the best tight end in this draft and possibly over the past three...
The main issue on offense is the offensive line... Jury still out on what role or where Cameron Clark will play... Mekhi Becton is a hit, we struck gold for the left tackle position for years to come but the rest of the line is a mystery... Only way a QB will survive is if we continue the rebuild of the line and this year the interior is stacked in the early rounds with quality pieces... Tennessee OG Trey Smith is the comparison to OT Mekhi Becton would sew up the left side for years...
Fix the line, get a max security option for Darnold like Pitts add another RB to those two above and stack the line with talent and find another one or two receiving options, then the Trevor Lawrence will be an after thought because now Darnold will have protection, a running game and receivers to catch the ball...

McAfee said we are tanking for Trevor. If so, I expect Darnold to never take another snap for this team. He will be out this week and traded next week . Gotta think Gase is aware, so this puts the fear of God in me that he will be back next year . Mark it..... if Darnold sits this week, he will be gone next week and maybe we get a look at the rookie sometime late in the season. They wont risk Darnold getting hurt and ruining a possible trade

Running game starting to click but no protection in the passing game and QB is blind to find the open target, oh wait no one is getting open... Main reason two receivers are always in the same vicinity of where the QB is throwing, go figure how can they get open...
So our Jets finally since 1965 gets a good QB,Trevor Lawrence, Clemson . Then with Seattles pick take a WR and then with first pick in 2nd round take best Center,O Lineman, TE,or RB! Jets can be flexible having lots of money. I would like to get a ranked top 5 Center and O Linemen thats a good Leader. Usually Center is best for this. Jets needs to make sure to build the O Line/ D Line like Titans playing smash mouth Football. SADLY JETS are right back into the weak pathetic Team that Rex Ryan had to change. Rex made it clear to all teams that Jets will take 2 shots right back on a cheap shot. Darnold getting hurt is just what I mean by that. Even though its Darnolds fault not passing, there was NO REASON TO SLAM DARNOLD! Ticks me off that everything Rex did is gone! Jets gets the big bad O Line and D Line and beast RB. Get rid of Arena League uniforms or just wear the Black Jets uniform and White alternate. So what's the plan if we manage a win somewhere or if Lawrence gets injured or decides to finish his degree? Or perhaps Lawrence's stock drops when Clemson play tougher opposition. According to some we should have already traded Darnold at this point. Are you going to take a QB not called Lawrence?

Lets say they are sitting in the 6th to 10th spot - could the Jets say - we would like Chase Young and your first round and second round picks. Would Washington do it? Would we roll with Darnold if we could add a prime edge rusher, a top OL (with the Wash pick) and an offensive weapon with the Seattle first round pick? If Lawrence is a generational talent, would Wash do that?

As much as I like the idea that Darnold is salvageable, and the bounty of picks and stud pass rusher you suggest it could be a generational mistake to pass on the Clemson QB.
it not just Washington, Atlanta possibly the Jaguars not to mention opening the door for the Cowboys because seriously think they are comfortable that Dak will be back to 100% and willing to pay him all that cash...
Just saying Jets get the #1, with Atlanta #2, Jaguars #3, Washington being #4 or #5 the Jets could set themselves up for years with not one bounty but possible double dipping... Atlanta would pay a hefty bounty to move up to #1 then the Jets can get a second bounty from Washington to move up to 2...
Jets have an affordable option with the team's 5th year for Sam especially what QBs are being paid and the cap possibly dropping after this year gives us flexibility...
Trevor Lawrence is just the next big name, there always going to be another... Doesn't mean he is the savior...
I agree if we draft him we would have a 2% chance of having a great QB between the two of them
