UPDATE: Plan if Fitzpatrick signs elsewhere? - Fitz and Jets are far apart on deal

It looks good for Fitzpatrick returning. Both sides have stated that it is their preference and it certainly makes sense for all sides.

However, until the deal is closed, there is always a possibility of another team swooping in and offering a deal that the Jets just could not match. How many times have some of you were sure of a deal, got through documentation and the closing fell apart because
someone else came along at the last minute with a better deal? (see Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #16) Denying that this is a possibility is naïve. One might have preferences but one also needs to do what is best for the family.

If this happens the team is left with Geno as the starter and Petty still learning. A lot of folks here will be thrilled beyond end.

Obviously, the draft won't help this year so you need to sign someone to compete with Smith. the fact that there is not much out there makes the loss of Fitz a greater possibility.

So what would be your plan?

Ugh, that would be us heading backwards but I would be okay with having Smith start the season and then have Petty come in midway through the season.

I think this is almost too horrible to think about. I also think the Jets have to match any reasonable offer Fitz may get to keep him on the team.

anything is possible but some things are more likely than others.. re signing fitzpatrick for instance.. but if we were to lose him i would let petty & smith compete for the job & draft a QB this april..

Agreed.... with the hope Petty wins that battle

Tag and trade mo to Dallas. Match any offer to Fitz within reason.
Draft best available olb beast worth the 4, pray Ezekiel is available with our own pick, sign a couple fa lbs for depth, grab Evan Mathis, sign Matt forte to compliment Ezekiel and catch 20tds out of the backfield.

Your premise is flawed, Fitzs fate is sealed.

You guys are way too overboard on Fitzy. He is a great backup who had his best year he is ever going to have. I love his moxie but in the end he choked. He ain't the guy.

Not so fast.
Given good health for 16 games and more familiarity between his weapons and hisself, it's not only likely, but more probable than not, that FitzMagic will have a better year in 2016 than he did in 2015.
That expectation is exactly the same for the 31 other starting QBs, if they were in the same position.

Big mistake for the Jets if they guarantee more than 1 year 6-7 mil with escalators. Second year is not guaranteed but same money and escalators. He is worth a gamble but not franchise money, so if someone offers a lot of green; let him walk.

Jets are currently working on a deal and it should be projecting roughly 2 year deal for $15 no more than $18 million... I would expect all the guarantees will be in the first year with maybe some guarantees in year two... Front loaded definitely... The only problem the Jets have right now is clearing the cap space to make this type of deal a reality...

Yes they moved on from Cromartie and the cap has been set to $155 but there are other players also looking to receive new deals so it will be interesting on how they accomplish and who gets what... But there shouldn't be any concern...

Probably not a better situation for Fitz than with the Jets. He 100% will stay.
he's an amazing mentor for his young buddy petty.. he's on record saying last season was his most enjoyable of his NFL career.. & the bills have already made him a wealthy man..

& yes, there probably is not a better situation for fitzpatrick than with the jets.. or vice versa, for that matter..

re-signing fitzpatrick with a deal that works for both sides is essentially a foregone conclusion.. thankfully.....

There is no other option besides resigning Fitz. I can only imagine how f*cked the team would be if he does not resign? Sorry to be so depressing, but it's a QB driven league. This is the first time the Jets have had a talented (not great, but talented) QB since 2008. And even if you do not believe Fitz can win the SB (I don't), at least we have someone who makes the transition into Bryce Petty (someday?) much smoother. That in a nutshell, is what the absolute need to resign Fitz is all about.

And here's the other thing that most are not understanding......

Fitz NEEDS the Jets as much as the Jets need him.

I'm serious. Fitz quite simply played out of his F*cking mind in 2015. It's not a stretch to think he even surprised himself? I am sure he understands (being a very intelligent guy, Harvard graduate) that he needed guys like Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker and an OC in Chan Gailey to be so successful? He understands what he was and what he will be without them.

Throw on top of that the additional byproducts of such great chemistry with guys like Bilal Powell? In fact, I would think Fitz should make his resigning contingent on the Jets resigning Powell as well. May sound ridiculous, but it's true. Fitz very definitely missed Bilal Powell in Buffalo the last game of the season. Fitz is not a long ball artist. He needs to make the most of his short passing options and guys like Bilal Powell fit that bill to a "T".

So before you go overboard thinking about what you should pay Fitz to stay, you need to remember this love affair is likely a two way street.

not re-signing fitzpatrick would be an absolute nightmare for the jets..

unless petty is the diamond in the the rough we hope he is.. but even then, will he be ready to start in '16??

not gonna let myself get worked up over this thread.. fitzpatrick will be our starting QB next season.. LOLz the football gods simply can't be that cruel, can they??

I disagree that he choked, Rex knows his weaknesses, and has historically always had Ryan Fitz number. He was outplayed. Fitz isn't Brady or manning, who can just will a team to victory. But short of those guys, he does a lot to help our team. Not to mention manning had more ints than tds this year I believe, but won a super bowl. He would have been deemed a choke artist without an amazing defense. Not to mention against buffalo, he lost ivory and Powell, and mo Wilkerson.

He was forced into making bad choices against a very good d, when we lost our entire running game.

Is Fitz Brady? Hell no. Is he right guy at right time? Yes.
