Scouting the Opponent: Cleveland Browns

browns-art.jpg

The Buzz:
The Browns enter Week 8 in search of their first win. Cleveland, led by first-year head coach Hue Jackson, has been bitten by the injury bug in 2016, playing six different quarterbacks and losing starting rookie receiver Corey Coleman. Sunday’s matchup will mark only the third game the Browns have played at FirstEnergy Stadium this season.

Offense:

The Staples: RB Isaiah Crowell ranks No. 9 in the league in rushing yards this season with 495 and is tied for third amongst starting RBs, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Crowell has been effective without a high volume of touches — the most carries he’s had this season is 18. The third-year player has four rushing touchdowns this season, tying his total from 2015.

Former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor is having a breakout year — as a receiver. He leads the team in receptions (35), yards (431) and receiving touchdowns (4). With the injuries under center for the Browns, Pryor played QB and WR against the Dolphins Week 3. He lined up 14 times at quarterback, rushing for 21 yards and a touchdown as well as completing three of his five passes. As receiver, he hauled in eight catches for 144 yards and even lined up as safety on a Hail Mary to end the first half.

QB Carousel: Entering the season, Robert Griffin III was named the starting QB for the Browns. In Cleveland’s Week 1 matchup against the Eagles, Griffin went down with a shoulder injury that placed him on IR. A week later, Josh McCown suffered a shoulder injury and would be replaced by rookie Cody Kessler. Kessler was taken out of the game against the Patriots Week 5 due to a minor injury, allowing Charlie Whitehurst to fill in as a reliever. This past week against the Bengals, Kessler was back in his starting role and suffered a concussion, allowing rookie counterpart Kevin Hogan to complete the game. Hogan, who was activated from the practice squad earlier that week, may become the fourth quarterback to start for the Browns in eight games if he starts against the Jets on Sunday.

Defense

The Anchors: Two-time Pro Bowl CB Joe Haden is the leader of the Browns secondary as he tops the team in both INT (2) and PD (5). Last season Haden only played five games due to a concussion, but in 2014, he was extremely productive, recording 20 PDs, 3 INT and a trip to the Pro Bowl.

Third-year ILB Christian Kirksey may not be a renowned name in the NFL, but he is a jack of all trades for the Brown defense. Mostly a special teams player last year, Kirksey leads the team with 58 total tackles, four shy of his total from last season. The Iowa product is also tied for the team lead in TFL (4) and QB hits (5) to go along with his 1.5 sacks and one INT.

Hit The Ground Running: Rookie OLB Emmanuel Ogbah has been a spark for the Browns defense. The Oklahoma State product leads the team with 3.0 sacks and is tied with Kirksey for the team’s best in TFL (4) and QB hits (5). Ogbah has also recorded two PDs and 23 combined tackles.

Obviously the Jets should win this game but will they? Cleveland may be winless but they are a fiesty team that will fight you till the end. This is just the kind of Jets game that they will lose just because their supposed to win. Besides the fact that, they aren't as good as advertised at the beginning of the year. I won't be watching the game simply because Fitz is the QB but I will be routing hard for BM and Powell. They are on my FF team. Those who will watch have fun and I will check the highlights out from time to time.

anyone who things this is a gimmy should remember this form jet history: there is reason to think this is no sure thing. Four times the Jets have been a team’s only win. The 1968 Bills, 1972 Oilers, 1980 Saints and 1991 Colts all won one game — against the Jets.

This game doesn't scare me. The Jets, coming off a win, will probably run away with it. I'm feeling good vibes on this one.

Lets roll man.

Root for Fitz at the helm. Its the Jets when its all said and done. Get this team back to .500. Never know how the season will pan out especially when an unknown finally steps onto the field. #Bryce

I don't get the mind set of some fans wanting Fitz to fail. He's part of the team, isn't he? Come on fellas

Josh McCown is the starter I believe. We should win either way.

I don't get it, either. If the line of reasoning is that Fitzpatrick playing better will bring him back, I wouldn't be so sure of that. He's been up and down throughout his career. Maccagnan was correct in not giving him the big contract, and I don't see that changing. If Fitz finishes strong, I predict a modest one year deal to return, as a backup plan in case Petty and Hackenberg fail.

And there's no guarantee Fitz would want another one year deal for less. So there's a high likelihood that he won't return regardless. In the meantime, why root against him? I'm not rooting for high draft picks just yet.

Man, watching fantasy football show on NFL network and one of the guys just said he'd sit Phillip Rivers this week playing against the Broncos for any other QB playing, well except Ryan Fitzpatrick. Ouch.

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!!

That's my message to all Jets fans this weekend. As has been well documented, Todd Bowles has shown great ability to bully and beat up on losing, flawed teams.....

Well, the Cleveland Browns are EXACTLY what could give Jets fans a clouded view of toilet Bowles. After Sunday, make sure to be objective about your opinions on Bowles. Remember, he just got his clock cleaned 5 times by 5 pretty good teams. That, while everyone knows this team does have some talent and yet they looked lost?

My question for you is... Do you want a coach that only beat teams with a losing record? I say NO. I want a HC that can beat the very best that the league has to offer. Bowles has shown that he is nowhere near that type of HC in his second year.

Do not pay as much attention to a win over a winless Browns team. Pay attention to games against the Patsies and Buffalo as this season concludes. THOSE are games which will let us know if our HC is up to the task..

I think you may have just bought into this weeks hype

Cleveland's offense can actually score points, its their defense that stinks...

Unfortunately our offense led by Fizzlemagic worries me because he can force the issue too much that he will make the Browns' defense look like a pro bowl defense... By chance Gailey has either finally learned or Bowles has whispered in CG's ear and told him we need to be a run first offense then Fitztragic won't be a problem...

Our defense should be able to shut down their offense which I am not worried about...

Then it comes down to special teams and as we saw last week it is still a special something...

Great point man.

Can't start wishing for high draft picks now. It's not that time yet. If we're 2-8, then sure.
Though i just have this belief that Fitz hopefully can get us to 5-5. It gives Bryce and Hack 4 more weeks to get some more film study and preparations down pact before actually being called upon.

Also, who knows, if we're right in the thick of things that when we do acually give one of these guys a shot, they'd be the exact spark we need to get over the hump and into the playoffs?

As you stated, too early to root against them.

But we gotta beat up on these teams first and foremost before leading up to the Pats and Bills.
I know you dislike Bowles and i repect your opinion. Though at the same token, lets enjoy the wins as they come. Primary goal before the bye is 5-5.

Yeah , I would love to get to 5-5 . But then Fitz will be cemented back in trying to squeeze out a wild card spot.

Wow , I can't believe I just typed that with optimism

So far this year, the Jets have beaten the teams they were favored over, and last to the teams favored over us. Basically the Jets wins and losses match what they were supposed to do.
I'd like to have beaten 1 or 2 teams that are better than us, but this team was built to be a powerhouse when healthy, and they are anything but healthy. It's been ugly a lot, but we pretty much ended up where we should have.

If we can beat up the trans we are supposed to win against, that leaves us needing to build momentum for the pats.
