What will be the Jets 2016 record?

Jets QB Bryce Petty believes he's made "night-and-day" improvement since being the No. 103 overall pick of last year's draft.
"For me, it's a process," Petty said. "Just watching film, I'm seeing things. I played Madden the other day, and it's not just picking run plays anymore. It's like, 'Oh, they've got an under front (on defense).' You start picking up things differently. That's exciting for me." We wouldn't exactly consider it encouraging that Petty mentioned Madden when talking about his supposed improvement. All signs still point toward Petty being the odd man out if the Jets re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick. GM Mike Maccagnan didn't even mention Petty when discussing his quarterbacks earlier this month.

This is a bit redundant, but I saw this article by Cimini, and thought it was going to be a hatchet job. LOL

It's actually a pretty good take on things with Petty.

The education of a young Jets quarterback ... via Madden video game

NORTH CALDWELL, N.J. -- A young NFL quarterback can improve his understanding of X's and O's by studying his playbook on a computer tablet and by watching his coaches diagram plays on a whiteboard -- the old-fashioned way.

There's another way: Video games.

Bryce Petty, a second-year quarterback for the New York Jets, believes his football aptitude has improved based on the way he plays Madden.

Yes, really.

"I played Madden the other day, and it's not just picking run plays anymore," Petty told NJ.com Monday at teammate David Harris' charity golf outing. "It's like, 'Oh, they've got an under front [on defense].' You start picking up things differently. That's exciting for me."

After playing his college ball in Baylor's no-huddle, spread offense, Petty -- a fourth-round pick in 2015 -- spent his rookie season learning to play quarterback in a pro-style offense. He didn't take a single regular-season snap, so it was essentially a redshirt year.

"He made big strides in one year," offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said.

At 64, Gailey knows John Madden as a former Super Bowl-winning coach, not a name on a video game, but he's OK with anything that will help his players learn the intricacies of the game. This is a critical year for Petty, who has new competition -- rookie Christian Hackenberg, drafted in the second round.

"For me, where I was when they drafted me last year to where I am now, it's night-and-day difference," Petty said. "For me, it's a process. Just watching film, I'm seeing things."

If he can take his Madden knowledge to the field, the Jets might have something.

Petty was drafted as a talented 2 year project. he's only going to have one year to show he's an NFL QB.

This is a monster year for Petty. He has to come in and show that he is a viable alternative to geno smith............Or he might fall into the after thought mode with Hackenberg being the latest addition...........A 2nd rounder.

I'm pulling for the kid

This year's schedule looks tough, but so did last year's until every qb got hurt. The schedule is fluid from week to week. You only know how tough it really is, after the game is played.

I think I remember going there as a kid. It wasn't too far from where I grew up.

Our week 1 opponent will be without Vontaze Burfict (suspended 1st 3 games in 2016) and probably Tyler Eifert (ankle surgery). Those are two key pieces to the Bengals' team and their absence can only help our chances week 1.

Especially since it's a home game . . .

I haven't looked at Schedule . But a tough one with Fitz at QB we will be 8-8. Petty at QB throwing long deep passes 9-7. Hackenberg running around the field like a chicken getting sacked for NFL all time record & claiming INT record also gives Jets record 1-15. So I say Petty at QB & Fitz even with being surrounded by talent at WR's-RB-O-lINE STILL LOST TO REX RYAN.

lucky if they are 500 team with this schedule...

gents, I have thought about this a little more and wanted to amend my above prediction. Couple of thoughts.... 1) better team speed at LB, 2) we may have something in Bishop (pass rusher) form Canadian league, 3) LT needs to stay healthy and RT needs to be supplanted IMO, 4) Amero was playing H-B and TE and making plays so this maybe the year he adds value, 4) Our RB tandem is better IMO, 5) coaching staff and players have two years in the same system where you would expect to get some efficiencies of scale... play faster and hopefully better....

A lot of ifs but I can see us going 9-7 if we stay healthy and play up to our potential.

Now could of things I learned from other forums regarding OTA ...

1) Amero was playing much better (see above comments)
2) Hackenberg played ok nothing spectacular but solid
3) Petty had timing issues and didn't do well according to reports... hopefully he can turn that around or he could be the odd man out of they sign Fitz...
4) New LT was not participating in week 1 but did in week 2 OL drills and according to HC he looked decent.
