When will Geno Smith be cut?

As much as I dislike smith, he won't be out right cut. IMO the Jets will take a 6th for him, and be happy. As soon as some one comes up with a 6th or better he'll be gone. Probably shortly after the draft.

There is a scenario that he returns, but it's to painful to think about.

Yeah, I know that scenario where the Jets are so injury riddled at QB in TC that they are forced to keep Geno. Don't even go there, it's WAY too painful to think about.

Here's how I think this thing plays out...

1) Geno gets cut at the nearest possible time denying Geno of any bonuses and when it is most opportune for the Jets.

2) The Jets negotiate and finalize a deal with Ryan Fitzpatrick, probably two more seasons at the most.

3) Bryce Petty gets bumped up to second string for the 2016 season based entirely on preseason play and classroom learning, practices.

4) The Jets draft a young QB prospect in April. Just another guy to pipeline up the ranks. A young guy that will compete with Bryce Petty and keep him honest, keep him working hard and learning. If this young guy plays better than Petty, then he gets to back up Fitz. In other words, a completely fair competition. Let the chips fall where they may and that competition should also include Fitz. No one is safe unless they prove it day after day after day.

I read a recent article the other day. I think this season has humbled Geno. He is working harder than ever. Not saying he will improve on the field but it's a good sign that he didn't take this benching as a moment to sulk.

Ham posted a miked up video on the Pats game. About the 0:23 mark when Marshall scored a TD, everyone erupts. smith just stands there, then spits on the ground.

Don't think smith has changed one bit. Suspect his agent was calling Macc for a trade about 15 seconds after Bowles announced Fitz was the starter next year.

Agree with most of what your saying. 2 points I'd like to make. 1) it would be foolish to just out right cut smith. As hard as it is to believe as a Jets fan, he does have some trade value. He has two failed years as a starter, but he has started. He'll probably hang around the league a few years as a back up.

Teams who draft QB's in the 5th to 7th rounds aren't looking for day one starters, they are mostly looking for back ups. Smith fills that role. For another team. Jets badly need draft picks.

2) Barring something completely unforeseen, there won't be any competition for the starting QB job, any more then there was last year.

In spite of what he said, Bowles made it clear last year he wants continuity at his QB position from the beginning. Gailey made it clear, IMO, against what he desired, that there was no QB competition. Smith was the starter . Again IMO he went against what Bowls was saying because he wanted people to know it wasn't his decision to start smith after a camp competition.

Bowles had to do some spinning for about two weeks after that.

the relationship between the smith & the jets is completely fractured & will end with any other made for him.. & if no offers are made smith will be cut..

i'm done regurgitating the laundry list of reasons why.. what is, is..

Well you know what? I think that's great. Maybe the asshole will actually start to grow up? But IMO the damage here has already been done. It is my opinion that Geno would have been cut right after the incident with IK if they had known Fitz would have done as well as he did. At that time, the QB spot was rather unsteady/undecided. The best thing for everyone involved in this, players, coaches, Geno, fans, teammates, is to cut Geno and allow him to find another team. He got his chance with the Jets and he was terrible. Then, to top it all off, as if he wasn't already on shaky ground, he gets into an altercation with a teammate over a measly $600. I'm sorry but when something like that happens, people need to pay their penance. Geno has not yet paid his.

I also fully believe that cutting him would literally be therapeutic for the players. In fact, I work for the Dept. of Defense. It's common for me to go on the road for long periods while I work on projects. I was in San Diego in September of 2013 through about March of 2014. While I was out there I used to frequent a place called Henry's in downtown San Diego. It was a Jets bar and I could always go there and see the game, eat breakfast, etc.. There was a woman there that was the Aunt of Brian Winters. She told me a lot about the kid and how he was such a nice kid. She also told me that he liked everyone on the team except for one person and apparently it was common amongst his teammates. They all hated GENO SMITH. Player to player in a private conversation, they spoke endlessly about how incredibly annoying, arrogant, and just an overall punk Geno was. Mind you, that was his rookie year. So the players have known for a long time that they did not like him.

Colon made no secret of the fact that he had no love for smith. Colon wasn't a great player, but he was always known as a leader in the locker room.

Fits in with what I observed in the 8 home games I saw

Offense comes off the field
Fitzpatrick takes seat on bench with QB coach. At his other side is Bryce Petty in street clothes

25 yards away from any of this stands Geno, pouting, looking angry and staring at his empty clipboard

Not a big deal really since he wouldn't be able to remember any suggested play calls anyhow

Is that Petty? I wasn't sure if inactive players could be on the sidelines for home games.

In one of the games I was watching on TV, Fitz had just missed a pass on 3rd down, the camera panned to him just as he was sitting down next to smith on the bench. Patullo came up to them with an ipad, and shooed smith to move down the bench so he could sit down, and show Fitz something on the ipad. smith got up and walked away. It struck me as odd smith wouldn't be interested in what Patullo had to show Fitz. Just then some one in street clothes literally came running up behind them, and clearly was observing what they were talking about. I was wondering if it was Petty because the camera was showing Patullo and Fitz sitting. I couldn't see the face of who ran up.

Like I said, I don't know the rule for in actives on the field, but thought if that's Petty that bodes well for the Jets future.

OK, just got done posting the relationship is fractured.. well what you described is dysfunction.. the guy one hit away from going into a game can't be bothered with communicating with his QB coach & fitzpatrick??

see, this is just another reason why i don't think we can get a bag of rocks for the guy..

how can this be something we as jet fans can see & share with other jets fans but the other 31 GM's have no clue??

not giving bowles a pass on this either, BTW.. smith doesn't want to be in the loop during the game?? fine, he should have been deactivated & next man should have been up!! petty or someone off the street!!

i'm stunned bowles let that horse spit fly?!?!

un freakin believable!!

I understand what your saying, but when your in a play off fight you just can't do that. Not that smith is any good, but there just isn't anyone else available in the middle of a season.

Believe it or not, IMO I think some one will step up and offer a 5th or 6th for him. Of course it will be a crazy person, but it only takes one.

If no one does, it is my nightmare that he could still be on the team next year.

fair enough.. but at what point does it become insubordination??

i find hard to believe patullo & bowles were OK with this??

no fines for not being in speaking distance of your position coaching games??

no recourse??

Of course I'm guessing now, I doubt smith is being insubordinate. He is being what it appears he also is. Aloof. Superior.

I think he wants out of here as bad as we want him out of here. In his mind he's working hard. He's doing what he's told.

He's just not winning any friends. He notices that his team mates were hugging and shaking hands with IK after both Bills game. if he's here next year it will be only because he has to be. Think Bowles will be happy when he's gone.

yeah, it can't be insubordination..

it would be completely over the top even for smith!!

i wonder how common or uncommon it is for 2nd string QB not to be attached at the hip of his QB coach during a game??

especially with less established QB's.. like smith for instance..

VERY good point. How can any GM be so dumb as to not see that the guy is a prick beyond imagination? Furthermore, how could any GM be so dumb as to be blind of what the players think in so many words. Man to man after or before games if any GM wants to know what Geno Smith is all about they could get the skinny from any Jets player. You know these people talk.

Now, I don't necessarily believe there is absolute ZERO trade value for the guy. Very nearly zero, but I do they could possibly get a 6th or 7th for the guy.

But what I really think everyone here is missing (not you), is the fact that cutting Geno Smith would truly be a team moment for the players. Posters are underestimating how much of a happy moment and confirmation that the front office has the players back when they cut him. He's a locker room cancer. He's an asshole. He's a fucking creep. He also SUCKS as a player. At this point, what more is there to find out? Cutting the guy would be a therapeutic and very happy moment for the rest of the team and probably the front office as well.

Suffice it to say, the Jets will not be opening any full page newspaper ads for Geno's new team like they did for Thomas Jones.

I'm assuming by the tone of this that you don't want Geno Smith starting next year. :33:

at this point, it's obvious to all parties involved, (including smith & his agent) he shouldn't be on our roster next season..

& if he is on the 2016 roster i guess there's no point in drafting a QB in april, right??

not if smith has a "grandfather clause" to be on the team next year..

i'm speculating but this is a message board, so.....
