this is a complete rebuild....we forgetting that? Neither the draft nor FA could plug all the holes. I know I know -most Jets fans don't understand what a quality organization looks like...it's been a long time since they had a definable structure of competence. This may just be the first time in 50+ years they have a correct approach to building a roster. They have flushed what won't be here in a couple years - refused to get into contracts that will last a couple years or more- and have been adding through the draft and building draft capital.
Because of the complete incompetence of the prior two GMs - the Jets have no draft classes that have produced contributing players. They are starting at ridiculously low level of roster competitiveness. They plugged in rookies to starting positions - what do you expect? They picked up bargain FAs to prevent future cap years from being compromised when the surrounding cast is better and more expensive. Even last year's draft was done with Adam Gase involved- you think Joe D acted alone? Please. This year we have a defensive HC and there was significant influence on not only how the 2nd/3rd days of draft went, but FA (or the lack thereof).
Here is what i do know -2021 is the first year the GM had control -draft, FA, HC. It should all have his fingerprints on it. I'm sure he can share some of it for 2020, but he wasn't in charge and had to work with Gase and his needs at the time. Would the 2020 look the same with a Saleh in charge? Probably not - so think about just how much blame goes to JD.
Finally I will say time is to blame. There hasn't been enough of it spent together. From the OL to the QB on the field to the experience of the OC as a playcaller. Time is the enemy so far but every week we get more of it. Make no mistake, there are bodies on this roster that will eventually be replaced by better ones - it takes time. Patience gang, patience. Wave the flags -wear the Green - BE LOUD AND PROUD - BETTER DAYS ARE COMING!
