Will Mac Pull Off a Big Trade This Summer?

The before and after image for Mac's 2017 and 2018 Jets is fairly dramaticly different.

2017 Offseason
  • The big contracts were cut loose. And it's interesting that none of these big names did anything last season.
  • As a result, he freed up tons of cap space to fill in the many holes he has on the roster.
  • Mac signed the perfect bridge QB in McCown and now he's being looked upon to groom the future.
  • Mac didn't make the same mistakes 3-4 teams in front of him made and drafted Jamal Adams.
  • The second round curse is FINALLY over.
  • He stole a second round pick and a solid receiver in Kearse from the Seahawks for Sheldon. Interesting that the Hawks didn't re-sign him after one season.
2018 Offseason
  • He translated the extra second round pick and his own second round pick to move up three critical slots in the draft.
  • He didn't make the same mistake the Browns and Giants made and nabbed his guy Darnold. It couldn't have worked out any better for Mac.
  • He finally got a #1 corner for Bowles. And he smartly re-signed Claiborne for the #2 role.
  • Crowell and Willianson were solid YOUNG pickups to fill/improve spots on both sides of the ball.
  • Keep on eye on Antonio Garcia as a potential LT of the future without giving up any assets.
Mac improved both sides of the ball from the 2016 end of season roster. Better yet, Mac has left himself significant resources to continue to improve the team in the 2019 offseason. The question is what, if anything, will Mac do THIS YEAR to improve the team. Does Mac have another Sheldon Richardson type of move up his sleeve?
  • Can Mac nab a OLB/DE to drastically improve the pass rush? Seems logical that Mac will call his old neighbor Tom Coughlin, to enquire about 23 year old Dante Fowler from the Jags? We know Blake Bortles is not an elite QB and if Teddy continues to show he's back he would be a drastic improvement over Bortles. A straight up swap is not going to cut it and the fact that Mac doesn't have a second rounder next year doesn't help. What else would Mac need throw in to narrow the gap? 2018 third rounder and 2019 second round picks?
  • Does Mac dip his toe in the supplemental draft pool? Sam Beal would likely be the guy if he does. Claiborne will likely not be on the team in 2019 and Mac might be tempted to find a cheaper alternative than signing another high priced corner to take his place.
  • While help is needed on the OL I don't think there's anyone out there worth giving up assets for. It's more likely this will be Mac's number one area of improvement in 2019.
  • I think the team is high on the young wide receivers and tight end talent currently on the roster so I wouldn't envision any moves here.
What else can Mac be targeting over the next three months?

I saw the speculation the other day that the Jets could inquire about Fowler (Cimini, right?). I don’t think the Jags would trade him to the Jets, and it would take a hell of a lot more than Teddy Bridgewater. Pass rushers are so hard to find, and the Jags used a top 5 pick on him just a few years ago. I’ve seen Shane Ray’s name mentioned as well, and that Denver might be ready to move on after this last draft. Ray has been dealing with an injury, but he’s got big time talent.

Unfortunately though, it’s gonna be some combination of Mauldin, Bass, and Martin opposite Jordan Jenkins. I was impressed with Bass last season in limited action, but I don’t think he’s the long term answer. This team is going to need to address OLB and LT next off season.

Two things...Ray has played 15 games in 3 years. Pass!! Also Fowler is definitely an option. The Jags passed on the 5th year option.

I think your way overvaluing Teddy.
Ray and Fowler will be FAs as will Lawrence from Dallas and we have over $100 million dollars in cap space next off season.

Adonis Alexander would be a more likely candidate if we were to draft anyone in the supplemental draft. He's a much better fit for Bowles Defense.
If Teddy is traded, it will be later. With McCowns injury history, he is a much needed insurance policy.
There are some very good building blocks in place , great back end depth and rotational players in place, if trades are made, they will likely be for draft picks. Next off season should be all about getting a stud pass rusher and putting the pices around Darnold to succeed.

The fact that Fowler (and Ray) will be free agents likely means the Jags would take less now than they otherwise would. I just don't think Teddy is kept as a backup all season or will be very valuable if he's traded a few weeks into the season. If Darnold shows something in the preseason I think Mac tries to send Teddy before week one. That adds an additional $10mm cap space for next season. That said, you're right and it will take a lot more than Teddy to get a guy like Fowler back. Yes, TFL, I'm probably dreaming here but it's fun to think how good this defense can be with a pass rusher.

I'm also wondering if Mac can 'buy' an extra draft pick for 2019 with their cap space war chest, as the Browns did by trading for Brock Osweiler then cutting him.

If Teddy shows anything in preseason and his knee can actually hold up throughout camp ( still a big if ) his value will rise. Injuries are a sure thing in the league and it's almost a guarantee that some team will lose its starting QB. That's likely when Bridgewater will be traded.
I Know Cimini recently had a story about Teddy for Fowler but it's very unlikely. Bortles played with a serious wrist injury to his throwing arm and Should have a much improved season. I don't think that the Jags are going to have interest in Teddy barring an injury to Bortles or a major setback in his recovery. In that case, Teddy's value would be higher than Fowler straight up.
As it stands, I think Mac will ride out the preseason and watch how Darnold Develops, how Teddy's knee holds up and what injuries occour around the league.
One thing that Mac has proven is that he makes good trades , even if his drafting is questionable.

All true TFL. Perhaps a guy to keep an eye on is Alex Okafor of the Saints. Like Teddy, he's relatively young and is coming off an injury (albeit nowhere near as bad as Teddy's). And also like Teddy, he is on a one year $10mm prove it deal. The Saints drafted his replacement in Marcus Davenport and have a solid backup in Hau'oli Kikaha who is only 25. It seems to me that IF HEALTHY, Teddy might not only be a much better backup for Brees, he may eventually be his replacement. Okafor played for Bowles one year and had his best season of his career. He is not as good as Fowler but he could be a much better alternative than what we currently have. Also, he would cost much less.

I don't think Okafor has the ability to play OLB in a 3-4 especially not coming off the Achelies tear. I know we need an edge rusher but don't think we will be getting one before next off-season.

I'm not sure if he played DE or OLB but he had his best year by far while playing for Bowles. He racked up 8 sacks.

No he won't. I think he'll let this team compete and then worry about next year after the season. This year will be about getting guys playing time and chemistry to evaluate them.

If teddy and Pryor flash in camp, I could see them packaged to a team that loses their starting QB to injury. Both positions are full of talent, and vets are blocking kids from getting playing time.

I think he was used as a situational pass rusher in AZ. Had a good second year but then had the arrest and injuries every season since. Never came close to his second year production.

Don't see a big trade happening this year. Next year's draft at this point seems loaded with edge rushers. Would be a bit short sighted to trade for damaged goods.
If Bridgewater is moved I think it will be for draft capital.

I agree. I don’t think we’re making a big trade for an edge rusher, either. As much as fans don’t want to hear it, I think they want to make a final determination on Mauldin to see if he can recapture some of his rookie season production, as well as evaluating guys like Josh Martin, David Bass, and even the Donahue kid.

I believe the team is mildly optimistic it can compete this season, but I think they know it’s more about Darnold growing and getting some FA help next off season. We need more talent. On both sides of the ball.

doubt mauldin has anything to do with trying, or not to somehow land a edge rusher a month before training camp..

Mac (and Bowles) have a balancing act to do in 2018. On the one hand, it's about growth, especially with a new QB. On the other hand, another five win season might mean their jobs. It's unlikely the offense will be able to carry this team, relying heavily on the defense. I'm not suggesting Mac is about to go all-in but I think he won't hesitate to pull off a trade to help the defense. Even a decent pass rusher could mean an additional one or two critical wins this year.

I personally think this is team is going to win more than 5 games and may surprise some folks. Obviously a lot of that is dependent on the QB. But this defense has the potential to be in the top half of the league. The offense can also be a top 15-18 offense if things break right for them. I see this as an 7-9, 8-8 type of team. They still have some pieces to add, but they are definitely on the right track if their key players can remain healthy this year. There's also some depth at key positions which helps.

Unless Sam Darnold takes the starting job and plays like he did at USC, I see a 7-9 type of season, too. The schedule isn’t too bad this year. We should be a little bit better because of the upgrades on both sides of the ball, especially Trumaine Johnson. I’m fine with that kind of record as long as Darnold gets into some games by the end of the season to prepare him for 2019.

Looks like one of the biggest storylines of training camp will be the health of Bridgewater. His signing may be Mac's second best offseason move. Add Tampa to the teams who may be in play for a QB. The interesting thing about the Bucs is a trade for Teddy not only means he starts the first few games but he could be a long term answer given Jameis's status.

If the Jets can trade for Fowler, then this would be the absolute best off-season of all-time.

We have not had a Pass rusher since John Abraham (2005). If Bridgewater is the focal point f the trade and thats what JAX wants plus a third rounder...You do IT!

This Jets squad is built in a certain fashion that we have play makers that allow other players to play at a higher level. The only one we're missing is a legit pass rusher. How long will this Jets defense depend on their secondary to make plays while there is no push on the DLine??

We have our franchise QB. We have Wrs that can burn any defense and getting Q is a huge plus. Our O_line is vastly improved. Our Secondary is absolutley lethal with the addition of Trumaine Johnson. Our Line backing core became more agressive with the signing of Johnson.

We Need a pass rusher. Make this happen.
