IMO if your a projected top 10 you should go there. That being said, maybe he feels he may slip and doesn't want the embarrassment of all eyes on him for every pick while he waits.

He probably fears that his rape accuser will show-up now that she's gone public, or maybe the league fears it and quietly asked his representatives to keep him away, because its the last thing Goodell needs after the Ray Rice debacle.

If she shows up and starts giving tearful interviews like she recently did with one of the networks, it could really blow-up in Goodell's face, and what does he do when he has to hug and take a picture on that stage with the #1 overall pick?

When you think about it, its better for everybody if he stays away.

I don't see any value in seeing the player hug Goodell. I'm happy that he will be home with family to celebrate without a camera in his face. It's his day.

2007 #3 overall pick, LT Joe Thomas, wisely decided to spend draft day on Lake Michigan, salmon fishing with his dad and brother.
Smart Sonofagun, HYATT™ says.
Only cameras on that boat were their own.

I think its quite selfish on his part, specifically if he is the overall number 1 pick, he has to be made to realize that the Draft(as it is today) is a event put on for the fan base.

True True, but 3 things are different here:

1) Thomas was an Tackle not QB, and OL does not get the love or attention of a franchise QB.
2) Back then, the draft was not as big a deal as it is now.
3) Plus Winston is probably going to be the #1 pick, not 3rd.

If I was the owner of the Buc's, I would be pissed off if Winston was a no show @ the draft. This is a huge day for both Winston & the Buc's, and I think he should be there. Winston is already starting his NFL career on the wrong foot.

Don't blame him a bit. If I had a son who was considered for a top 10 pick, would definitely advise him to stay home. Really last chance to spend quality time with his family and friends for quite awhile

Would be for me.

Much rather celebrate with my Dad and brother, then with a bunch of phony media types who will be rooting for failure so they have juicy stories to write about

Oh, gimme a break. Let the kid enjoy this moment with his family. My goodness. He's going to be in every camera lens for the next 15 years. Do we really need him to be there? Again, what value does this bring to you and other fans? His team isn't going to be "pissed". Why is this so important?

It isn't.

Have you ever attended the NFL Draft live ? It is a big deal for the players & team. Why not fly his family to Chicago for the draft. Plus us "average Joe's" get 2-4 weeks vacation a year, players get several months to be with their friends & family. For all the millions the Glazier family is getting ready to pony-up for Winston, I would want him there.

Yeah the Glazier's are going to pay him several million dollars over this contract. If he is any good he'll earn them 10's of millions of dollars.

He owes his family a lot more then he'll ever owe the Glazier's. They are the ones who got him here.

Also don't discount the NY factor here. For a lot of these kids the draft was their first chance to visit NYC and for one weekend be the toast of the town at the famed Radio City. Thats not a big deal to us native NYers, but a lot of these kids are from small towns and that was a BIG DEAL for them, something they really got excited about.

Who the hell gets excited about visiting Chicago?

I hope he doesn't show up, and the NFL deserves this for moving the draft out of NYC.

OK homebodies, name the last time the #1 draft choice was not there when the Commissioner called his name ? Crickets ! That's right, because it's never happened. I still think Winston will be there in Chicago with the rest of his peers.

Cy,
that's fine that you feel that way and if you're ever the #1 pick you can choose to fly to Chicago and be there. But to criticize Jameis because he now wants to AVOID the bright lights and just humbly stay home with his family and friends is beyond ridiculous. This kid can't win with some of you. You would rather him put on a ridiculous Sean John suit and parade around for the cameras? The Bucs could give a rat's ass about all that and I guarantee you that they are happy that Jameis has no interest in doing that. It just reinforces that they are NOT getting Johnny Football 2.0.

To me this is just finding a reason to be critical when one isn't there. I applaud Jameis for wanting no part of the spotlight and instead having his priorities in the right place. Good Lord, people.

If it were me I would want to be there but as the 1st pick or a top 10 pick Im getting an apperance fee the same way they make me pay if I dont show up to media events once the contract is signed
