what QB do you want & what is the
minimum team you can build with that choice. As an example I want Watson so I must sacrifice picks to get him. What can I get by with that will allow me to get him & build a good team. I also have to build with FA's

We all know a QB is of Paramount importance to a football team. The easy thing to do is keep Darnold & it may also end up being the best. Who knows????

But my point is we have many holes to fill & yet we don't want to end up with a dud QB on an average/good team. We also don't want a QB & no team.

I also know that Rome was not built in a day so we have a couple of years to do this.

So what am I going to ask you all lol.

What is the minimum that we could get through FA & the draft that would give us the freedom to get a QB if we decide to go that direction of buying one (like Watson).

So this is what I say (not in any order). Now I am talking very good to good players only here. The rest could be filled in with lower draft choices or cheaper FA's. These are the must haves! In this case I know I will need to go without some good draft & FA's to get the QB that I want this year if I were the GM.

So I would try to get Watson & trade Darnold only if I could have the five quality players listed next in this years FA class & draft.
Quality
1) Edge Rusher
2) Top WR
3) CB
4) OT or Guard
5) LB

Now make your list & it can be 4 or five or six+ players & build the best team by your QB choice.

Now for those of us that want Watson could we build a team this year that can compete with those five positions showing real improvement & Watson as our QB**

** If we go this way we know that we won't get everything we want this year but with Watson (your QB) will we be better off as a team.

IMO I have seen good teams with middle of the road QB.s or worse sink said team.

Now you all do the same with your QB pick & what you feel you must have this year & for the future.

Now If i knew Darnold was the answer I would keep him & trade down to get the most talent I could. I just don't see Darnold Duck as our answer.

I am seriously convinced that Watson is not available to the Jets. That's my gut feeling about that. I personally don't care if they keep Sam and try to fix him or trade him. The point is you are right we need a good quarterback. If I'm the GM and I am not 100% convinced that I can fix Sam I use that #2 pick and/or try to trade up if TL is my choice, to get a QB that I believe can do the job. Then I manipulate the remaining picks however I need to so that I can build around whoever that is. There will some talent available in free agency this year. We need to build. If we were able to get Watson the high price would cripple the build effort for a long time. If we got Watson cheap that would be a different story. pay big for him and then give him no support he will be asking for a trade next year again.

Keep Darnold

Build all pro lines on both sides of the ball. Add skill positions and an edge rusher and even a mediocre QB with time to throw and someone(s) to throw to and he'll be throwing to them well into January

The get the QB first method hasn't been working well at all

The thing is Watson is proven. Now anything can happen but if we feel six players equal one I can see that. But if only three turn out g ood......one in the hand may best a few in the bush. It will be interesting

then you dont watch college football

Nico Collins has the ability to be a vertical option with speed and his hands
Dazz Newsome has the route running to be a dominate slot receiver
Rashawn Slater can step in day one and be the right tackle
Kylin Hill is all around back can run catch and block
Patrick Jones as defensive end could step in rotation but with his athleticism can become a good two down EDGE DE
Quinn Meinerz should be able to step in our newly power blocking scheme be the starter
Pat Freiermuth will overtake Chris Herndon if Herndon continues his up and down play
Mac Jones is insurance policy if Sam funks it up

but sure tell me why you only see two starters, lmao

I like Slater a lot, but is he better at OG than RT? Either way he projects to be a very solid if not a very good starter in the league. I have been struggling a bit with the idea of replacing Fant right away with a high pick. He will be a decent if not solid starter in the new scheme and actually graded out ok last year. I think IOL is more of a priority, which is why I wouldn't hesitate to pick Slater and use him there with the idea of perhaps moving him outside later. Meinerz is a really intriguing guy who could be a long term answer inside and is a nice developmental pick. I also like the idea of running two-TE sets with both Herndon and Freiermuth. I think Herndon might flourish in LaFleur's system and the pairing with Freiermuth would give defenses problems. Newsome is the type of guy who will also be a great fit in the new scheme and on Teams as well. All in all a nice job GMF, particularly on offense where you drafted an awful lot to build on. The only position and perhaps player I would like is DT Tufele from USC as a nice piece for the IDL. Can't do it all in one year though.

  1. Power Blocking scheme, excludes Fant an athletic tackle...
  2. Becton, Lewis, Meinerz, Elflein & Slater all fit the new scheme...
  3. Freiermuth can catch and block and Herndon shows up part time...To flourish he has to show up on the easy catches as well as he does on the impossible ones...
  4. Tufele is ideal but unless we can get extra picks we have to fill needs and right now we are stacked with potential... Franklin-Meyers projects as interior DL in new scheme, don't forget Foley these two will rotate from 4-3 & nickel...
  5. Do we re-sign Jenkins, Basham? They will be DEs... Huff, Zuniga are under contract... I say we re-sign Basham and draft P Jones II...
  6. Expect JD to find another EDGE guy in priority free agents...
  7. Nico Collins catches with his hands, and has vertical speed...
  8. Dazz Newsome could be compliment to Crowder in the slot or his immediate replacement...
  9. before Elflein got here he played center and right guard for us he played left guard but that is Alex Lewis' spot...

Maybe I'm confusing schemes as I thought LaFleur's scheme was an outside zone blocking scheme which I thought placed a higher priority on athleticism vs. power. Obviously ideal to have both qualities, but Fant may be ok temporarily as a placeholder. If you are correct about Fant then perhaps a guy like Leatherwood at 23 might be the answer. Don't get me wrong I really like Slater and feel he will be very good, but perhaps Leatherwood is just as good but could be had a little later thus saving pick 8 for something else. Just my thoughts.

Rashawn Slater:

Ideal Role: Starting center (teams will be well within rights to let him fail outside and work in if preferred).

Scheme Fit: Inside/outside zone heavy rushing attack to optimize lateral mobility, West Coast passing tendencies (if playing tackle).

Slater can play all 5 positions

Rashawn Slater is a scheme diverse and positional flexible prospect who should offer a little something to everyone depending on what specific needs and traits are prioritized for any given franchise. Slater, who opted out of the 2020 college season and has not played since the end of the 2019 campaign, is well regarded for his fundamentals and functional athleticism along the front. Slater manned the left tackle position for the Wildcats. For teams that don’t prioritize certain measurable thresholds, he appears to be a viable candidate to do the same in the NFL—based specifically on his work against 2020 No. 2 overall pick - draft network

Don't get your bloomers in a bunch . I happen to like a lot of the players you chose . my problem with your draft is it doesn't give us enough immediate help considering we currently hold 3 of the top 34 picks with the potential to add another 2 picks in the top 40 depending on what we do with pick 2 and Sam Darnold .
First off, i expect to come away with 3 immediate starters with our 1st 3 picks . I also won't be surprised if one of them is a CB . If we've made the decision to move forward with Sam Darnold then what is it saying with using the 34th pick on a QB. Either i'm moving forward with Darnold or I'm picking a QB top 5. My trade option at pick 2 is the Bengals, hoping that they're desperate enough to protect their injured QB to want to trade up ahead of Miami for an OT .
By the way, the 3 day 1 starters i was referring too are the OT and The TE . But you should know that i love the Edge and the RB . The RB could be a day 1 starter .
Can't wait for the start of free agency because who we sign will determine who we target .
