If you look around the NFL you are not seeing every new young QB hitting the ground running. IMO it is looking like it takes a 2solid 2+ seasons to develop these guys....if you go on the belief that Hurts, Tua, Jones are case examples. Not everyone is turning into a Mahomes or Herbert. Josh Allen was raw but got the right coaching that set his development in motion.
Fact is Zach needs to be the starter this season to develop him. Too many getting caught up in the win now mode when it is not warranted. They need to get this kid more consistent and curb the urge to keep too many plays alive. It's clear he was frustrated with having to ditch too many throws to avoid sacks in recent games, including Sunday.
To me there is only one way to get things going right - better protection. easy to say, tougher to fix. It's not just the pocket on throwing downs, what I'm talking about is balance. You bring a balanced offense and that will keep pass rushers from pinning their ears back. Move the sticks and get points. I've seen too much inconsistency in the playcalling to allow THIS OL a fair chance to help the QB. And let's not mince words, the QB needs help at the ripe ol age of 18 games especially when his college career wasn't against fierce competition much.
Why is Elijah not in the slot? Why does a small WR like himself keep getting assigned deep routes where bigger CBs are taking away the target area for the QB? I thought Garret coming in was to utilize his Lynn Swan-esque talent downfield.
Why did we go away from the run game when it wasn't established that NE could actually stop it? I wasn't seeing it stopped for losses like we've seen even with Breece playing. They were getting yards.
Zach has actually looked better this year in a clean pocket........numbers were top 10 before Sunday (no idea now). His big problem from last year to this year is when pressured. That is something needing the big fix....something college did little to prepare against. To my eyes, Zach has made some incremental improvement releasing/connecting on the screens/flats. All the way there? No not yet, but better.
Nobody wants to hear the word 'patience' but that is what is needed. Tell me who else is killing it? There is a lot of mediocre QB play in the NFL right now. Panic is not warranted in week 8.
