New York Jets Select Sam Darnold, USC

His build reminds me so much of Jim Kelly. The dude can truck people if he scrambles.

This is true, as long as he maintains possession of the ball while he does that I'll be happy. He needs to get better at reading defenses as well but I'm quite happy with the pick. I can visualize him as our franchise QB.

Please spare me the “USC quarterbacks” thing. What Mark Sanchez or Matt Leinart did has nothing to do with Darnold. Did the careers of Michigan quarterbacks Brian Griese and Todd Collins mean anything for Tom Brady?

Not sure yet until I see him play in cold weather. I had read he has never played in a game with the temperature below 54 degrees!!!
And I want to see how well he can not just throw, but hold onto the ball, in cold weather.
Is the (butt) fumble part of the USC playbook? We'll find out.

So for now, I'm not overwhelmed and i'm not underwhelmed.
Put me down as whelmed.

Later

I'm with you. Sounds like a good kid from the interview though

Look I hate the Giants but they have a chance to win a SB now with Manning. That great donkey of a WR & Barkley A couple of picks on the ol & they have maybe a three years good window to win the SB.

For those that say but how about the next 15?????? Look at a perfect world ...in that world you would win a Sb every 32 years.....one that is.........So the Giants have the best chance to win that in the next 3 years because of Barkley....................A SB qb, all world Wr & a good chance of an all world RB. Beef up that OL & a couple on D & they are good to go right now..

Plus the next 15 years after Manning......... Winning teams win & losing teams lose.......winning teams find ways to bring in QB.s

I think the Giants made the right pick for them this year & next.

I agree 100%. but I don't hate the Giants

Don't get me wrong , I like Rosen also, but Darnold is probably just as accurate a passer as Rosen , but he is extremely accurate on the run , and has that added dimension of being able to pick up yardage with his mobility, which we all saw last season , many times , when McCown tucked the ball away and ran for first downs. You can't teach that , and Rosen does not possess that ability. Darold reminds me of a bigger , taller Russell Wilson except an even better passer.

I hope your right and I believe you are. I just s sorta had my mind set on Rosen because I never thought Darnold would be there. Then I convinced myself he wouldn’t be there so I guess my heart then got set on Rosen.

In my case I wasn't referring to his school connection to Sanchez. I was referring to his similar ball security issues. I don't believe it's uncorrectable but it is an issue with him.

This is what I liked about him and why I wanted him more than any other prospect especially over Rosen or Baker. I just think he is smart, big, strong and GENUINE. A QB that as a fan we can be proud of on and off the field. All the other 3 had red flags. Darnold as a person does not have red flags. His mouth isn't going to get himself in trouble. I don't like the turnovers, but I really believe coaching can fix that. I've never been had this much hope as a Jets fan.

Never have i ever thought Darnold would be there. WOW! WHat a gift from Cleveland.

If anyone never saw the game that placed Sam on the map, it was the 2016 Rose Bowl shootout vs Penn State. The throw he made to win the game just demonstrates that this kid has what it takes.

His stoic attitude is perfect for the NY media. As much as i liked Mayfields , me against the world out look, Darnold is one focused individual who wont let the spotlight deter him from what he's striving for, a Super bowl.

The turnovers are the only problem concerning Darnold. Every QB is going to throw a few INT’s. But the fumbles are the bigger problem, IMO. That’s correctable though. Just being better at tucking the ball away sooner.

I remember being cautiously optimistic when we took Sanchez. I was happy, but something told me that I shouldn’t get too high over him. This time is different. I feel very confident about Darnold.

Cowherd nailed it

Yeah he definitely is giving all props to the Jets and Cardinals for what they pulled off. Don’t want to get to ahead of myself but is it possible that sometime in the near future, we may see a Jets-Cardinals SB? That would be epic. I mean that comment Rosen made of the nine teams making a mistake was mainly towards the Jets. I don’t think he figured Cleveland was going to draft him but I’m guess he was banking on the Jets getting him.

I’m with you on that. Sanchez worried me a lot more then Darnold. Seemed like a lot more of a reach on him. This kid here I didn’t do much research on at all really but I hear nothing but great things about him. Turnovers are correctable as long as his hands aren’t to small to hold onto the ball. His hands at 9 and 3/8 (I believe) which is average they say so it should be correctable. Sanchez hands were over 10 inches and he couldn’t hold onto the ball to save his life. So this all has to do with can the player train himself to learn then and hands size I’m guessing. Overall, I’m feeling very good about all of this just as I would if we drafted Rosen. Mayfield and Allen I would of had a lot more concerns about.

Many of us including me would have loved either Rosen or Mayfield as they're young QBs who wear their emotions on their sleeves. They're the epitomy of the "ra-ra" leader many of us like to see. Hell, even the media would have smelled blood in the water to pounce on both of these young kids.

Enter Sam Darnold, the guy seems very quiet and robotic if you ask me. Though in the grand scheme of things, especially that young is probably the best way to be to survive in this new york market. Guys like Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, Brian Leetch excelled in not giving into the bait of the beat writers and just have a stoic way of life .

Also, for those on the cliff about to jump due to Darnolds junio season collegiate turnovers; here are Matt Ryans numbers at BC

So yea, with the right work ethic, the right coaching and the right drive to get the most out of ones potential, its correctable.

I love Darnold's attitude. I want my QB to not let emotions get in the way of the task at hand. In NY, that kind of attitude is needed. I have never been confident in any pick the Jets make, but they hit a SB homer on this pick. Hope is all I wanted and I have hope.
