Official 2022 New York Jets NFL Draft Thread

It's very rare for Centers to get drafted top 10-top 15.

You say I know nothing about what NFL experts expect at an NFL level?

Then please explain to me how and why every single mock draft has Tyler Linderbaum going top 10 and no later than top 15?

I'm pretty sure a Center who cant absorb a bull rush doesn't get drafted 1st round.

Tyler Linderbaum is the #1 Center and a top 3 overall Offensive Lineman coming out and for good reason too.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt any of the mocks are done by NFL scouts. Most are done by desk jockeys like you and me.

Anchor Ability: The skill set here is modest given he doesn’t have the heavy hands to offset blows and you don’t get too many chances to see him sit down against full rushes given that the Iowa offense likes to run the football at a high clip and their passing game features plenty of play-action and screens. But when he’s forced into true sets and challenged with power, his ability to sit down is above average and his recovery ability to reset his base is very good.

Hand Technique: Linderbaum has got clamps for hands. Despite a lack of ideal reach and wingspan for the prototype, he’s a one-handed striker (snap hand is his right hand) and clearly showcases his wrestling background with the activeness in his hands and ability to continue to work and reset.

PFN
Although Linderbaum demonstrates excellent play strength, he could use a little extra weight. The addition of a little extra bulk would help him combat the few instances of him being taken to the ground during the play.

Having only taken to the position two years ago, there is some rawness to his game. He needs to iron out some technical inconsistencies, such as the timing and placement of his hands. However, this is to be expected at such a technically nuanced position. With another year of development, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Linderbaum consistently play at the highest level.

B/R
— Can get a little overzealous at the second level and overrun his target to open up the backdoor.
— Overly reliant on two-hand strikes in protection that shrink his margin for error; needs to vary his strikes and include more independent hands to keep rushers guessing.
— Marginal weight and girth causes him to be tardy to anchor when bigger rushers knock down his hands, get into his frame and bull-rush.
— Vulnerable to getting knocked back off his levels with the guards and picked off when defensive tackles spike and slant inside.

NDB
Needs to Improve
  • Stronger pass rushers can get under his pads and steer him aside.
  • Finesse blocker with average arm length who doesn't use his hands well to win at the point of attack.
  • Not physically imposing and has average overall strength and a little small for the position. Upper body gets over his feet too often and he easily loses his balance.
  • May need to put on a little weight to dominate at the next level
  • Loses leverage battles and plays with high pad level. Can be late off the snap.
SCOUTING REPORT: SUMMARY
Linderbaum currently is considered the top center in the 2022 NFL Draft class. However, whether he can crack the first round is yet to be answered as he does have size limitations and may be regarded as high floor low ceiling kind of player by NFL scouts. We currently have him pegged as a solid second-round pick who will likely end up as a starter in the pros.

the questions are not what he does good, it where he lacks and all these reports from credible scouting departments state that he has limitations due to his size, among other things... you can like him but he does NOT fit the ideal of what the Jets are looking for in an OL and if we take him he will struggle...

I feel as though he would a good fallback position if we don't grab Ikem in the first, but Ikem is clearly #1 option.
another option comes out of the Pac 12 like AVT a left tackle at Washington who is deemed to kick it inside Jaxson Kirkland right now as a tackle he is a third round but some say if he kicks inside he improves his draft stock to mid second...

bottom line, JD has some nice options to fill the spot.

last two of three mock drafts posted yesterday has Linderbaum going outside the Top 10...
only one has him going at 5 to the Giants but even the Giants won't select him there...

yes he does...
now @Old#15 correct me if I am wrong what do you look at when looking at a scouting report?

all the drooling positives
or
negatives (areas for improvement)

because to me areas for improvement is more concerning on if that is something they can overcome at this level...

i read an old report on him, and was worried about him being too light. He is a beast. 6'6'...325.
Size, strength, relative athleticism
When you think of offensive linemen, you think big nasties, particularly on the interior. Mays checks all these boxes.

At 6’6″ and 325 pounds, he has the requisite size to play guard or tackle in the NFL. He also plays the game with nastiness, looking to put his man on the ground at any opportunity. He’s demonstrated strength in multiple ways. Mays is more than capable of taking a man out of the play with one powerful punch. Cade also showcases impressive grip strength when he gets his hands on his man. Once he’s engaged, it’s rare to see his opponent break free from his vice-like grip. Mays also uses his lower body strength to anchor well when he gets set in pass protection.

Mays has impressive reps as a pulling guard or tackle and has some extended play at center. He moves well across the back of the offensive formation and routinely delivers a blow before his opponent has the opportunity to disrupt the play. Cade also gets out to the second level well in the run game.

Areas for improvement
His timing and placement of his initial punch are often off, allowing his opponent to get the better of him. While his grip strength is good, the above timing issues mean that he routinely doesn’t get hold of his man. This allows him to be beaten inside with disturbing regularity.
Mays is guilty of some immature penalties that will need to be eradicated from his game. Additionally, he’s missed time with injury in almost every season during his college football career, which may cause a red flag.

Final Conclusion (my own)
His areas for improvement makes him a depth guy early but because of his varied versatility can play all five positions gives him upside. But the main key of him being able to play center and knows the responsibility how to communicate and what to communicate makes him an intriguing center prospect for Benton and the Jets to look at... Figure this he may not start right away but his nastiness and run blocking ability along with his size and aggressiveness could anchor the line for years...

Area of improvement is always high on the list for where my eyes go first on scouting reports.

some people drool over the positives not realizing those inefficiencies might hamper said team...

Where are you getting them reports from?

Are they from actual NFL scouts? If so, which NFL scouts?
there is my point you don't even know who those initials belong too...
Bleacher Report
The Draft Network
Pro Football Network

those are online access points to said fans seeking information

there are other people like me that actually take the time to break down film and do write ups

but I must be a joke even though I have been doing it for 20 years during my free time

My biggest concern is injuries for Mays, when available I thought he was very good but the inside may be his best spot at the next level.

Draft Tyler Linderbaum and cut Connor McGovern while saving $9M and that is a gigantic O-Line upgrade.
ok Joe so you saying you fucked up giving Connor McGovern that contract?
c'mon dude a former OL in college, worked with Ozzie Newsome who is known for building the OL and DL of his team, yet you are saying we should get rid of someone who finished the year on an up tick for a player who may be worth a Top 10 pick... But his areas for improvement are few and far between and not what our TEAM needs at center...

Ok and those same sites all have Tyler Linderbaum going top 10/15 at the latest so obviously they love him as the Country's #1 Center coming out.

He would not struggle as a Jet (as you claim he would) because he'd become our Kevin Mawae/Nick Mangold Vol. 3.

I've watched Jets Football with my own two eyes for going on 30 years now. And after years of Kevin Mawae and Nick Mangold? I'm sorry but watching the Jets with mediocre Connor McGovern doesn't even feel like I'm watching Jets Football anymore.

Draft Tyler Linderbaum and cut Connor McGovern while saving $9M and that is a gigantic O-Line upgrade.

Mawae...number 52 to the Seahawks.
Thor...#29 to the Jets

Buyer be aware of an interior lineman in the top 10 of any draft. He better check EVERY STINKIN' BOX, and some you don't think of.

"If" you take Lindy at 10, you almost have to reconcile yourself to the fact that you're taking a RG high too, because at least in Lindy's first year, he is going to get mauled.

See his combine...if he benches 225 40 times, that might change things. But for right now, gotta pass this year.

Keep calling me (as one of your passionate posters) "Joe Douglas" and it just lets me know how much of a disrespectful person you are in real life.

You're insulting me and calling me Joe Douglas and all because I disagree with you about some aspects about Football?

1.) i think he was/is speaking to JD via your handle/posts when he does that to illustrate JD's rationale...I could be wrong, but if that were done to me, that's how i would read said retorts.

2.) If he was/is calling you JD, that's not a bad thing. JD is the closest thing we have had to a talent based GM in decades. If i were you, and in this example, my retort would be...

"robert, we're cutting Mc to save 9 million off the cap...that was my plan when i signed him; 2 years & done. my plan is to take the best line anchor and that's Lindy at 10. I am going to follow that with Ikem after i trade 4 to 15 with a second and third. That's my plan coach".

@DefenseWinsChampionships, you're a passionate Jet Fan. Stay that way...just learn your audience. I, for one, like your thoughts! you make sense to me.

but that buyer has watched football for 30 years and says he is the best center to come out in a long time... so he must have checked every box lmao
