Good morning fellas, i scoured every thread on this website to get a pure Geno Smith topic and of course i found it on the last page after a good 20 minutes. I thought it would be appropriate to continue on this headline as it underlines Geno Smith with a huge question mark on it.
Ok, here goes (and no i didn't smoke before writing what im about to write...maybe i should have though)
I have been maybe the most critical Geno Smith Jets fan that i can recall by reading many of the posters here (and the old site). Sure there are anti-Geno fans, but i feel i have bashed the hell out of him ever since John Idzik selected him in the 2013 2nd round draft. I bitched and yelled like no other. I'll tell you why:
He was a project QB (with alot of talent) going onto a team that was headed by a great defensive minded coach who had no idea how to develop a QB. Hell, it was ground and pound all day, even if we were down by 25. Though if the team tried to throw (Marty's M.O), there would be some sort of division, in which there was.
Geno IMHO was thrown into the fire and seemed lost as soon as the game began to speed up. As soon as the game plan began to become convoluted. As soon as the game became tight. There was no one grooming him. It was all on him, such with Mark Sanchez. Fans turned on him faster than a witch hunt (i being one of them).
Now comes the new regime. They preach what there predecessors here with the team preached: "Competition". Though, Rex really gave QB's a pass with this rule. Signing Vick last year was supposed to ignite Smith to play beyond his capabilities and see what he has to maintain the starting job. Yet, week after week as Geno continued to fail, he was still kept in the starting line up. This can only mean one thing:
YOU CAN DO WHAT EVER YOU WANT, EVERYTHING IS PERMISSIBLE. MISS TEAM MEETINGS. THROW 3 PICKS IN ONE QUARTER. ITS OK, YOU HAVE NO THREAT ANY ONE WILL TAKE YOUR JOB.
In essence, there was absolutely no discipline to steer this kid in the right path. Now, lets fast forward to the new regime. Todd Bowles has been around some average to great QB that have excelled under, the right system, the right tutelage and the right environment. Environment being, DO YOUR JOB OR NEXT MAN UP.
Redskins: Doug Williams & Mark Rypien. These are no hall of famers folks. But Joe Gibbs had a formula and that is what Bowles is bringing with him.
49ers: Joe Montana & Steve Young: These are hall of famers folks. Though Bill walsh/ George Seifert knew to place these leaders in position to have their respective talents flourish, not wither them ala GROUND AND POUND.
Jets/Cowboys/Cardinals: Vinny Testaverde/Chad Pennington/Drew Beldsoe/Tony Romo. Your average stud QB folks. Bill Parcells knew that sometimes a veteran must pave the way for a young gun to over take the throne. If merited.
Geno Smith is finally in a position to prove the nay sayers (such as i'am) wrong under this environment. The Jets brought in a QB in Ryan Fitzpatrick who is very familiar with Chan Gailey. Maccagnan drafted a potential replacement for the future in Bryce Petty (friggin "A"!). The table is set for Geno to either:
Fall flat on his face as many of us think he will with the kind of competition he hasn't seen since, hell maybe high school in which everything has been given to him.
OR
Prove 99% of the football world that the environment that he is currently under will discipline him in being a QB that will be dependable, serviceable and most importantly, RELIABLE into a winning QB.
IMHO, as a die hard Jets fan, i'am pushing for this kid to scratch and claw in becoming our stud signal caller for years to come if it all clicks.
Lets do this Geno!
