Geno Smith?

I'll go on record saying I fully believe Geno will have a "good enough" preseason, followed by a GREAT game at home against the Browns week 1.

After that is where I get nervous . . .

In all fairness he did play very well vs Green Bay in week 2. Unfortunatley, our then head coach called a bone headed time out as Geno threw a sweet TD pass to JK to tie it up.

Geno has the tools to be a dynamic QB this year. Excellent WR's. RB's by committee. Improved O-Line and an offensive system that fortunately doesn't allow him to think as much and will utilize his arm for the long ball.

I feel Geno will have to prove he is worth to be this new regimes starter as Maccagnan has already drafted his potential replacement in Bryce Petty. Make no mistake, Bowles will not hesitate to pull the plug on Smith if he continues to regress. Geno's back is to the wall and I think that's exactly what he needs in order to mature into the leader this team desperately needs at the position.

This training camp will be very interesting. (6weeks and counting)

Actually, that week 2 game is EXACTLY why I'm so nervous.

Geno has proven to play well when things go his way. When they don't, he implodes and ends up on the bench.

So either we need a Cinderella season where everything comes up roses, or we need a QB who can withstand adversity and come out standing on the other side . . .

Geno got off to a great start in that game in GB -- 8-10 & a TD on the first three drives, but then 8-22 with a pick the rest of the way. After a great start, we did nothing on offense over the last two+ quarters. Playing very well means playing well for 4 quarters, which Geno did not do at GB.

Former Jets backup QB Michael Vick praises Geno Smith

Unlike David Garrard, who offered a less-than-effusive evaluation of Geno Smith in a television interview last month, Michael Vick stayed on the high road when questioned about his former New York Jets teammate.

"I think Geno just has to stay the course," Vick told the NFL Network's "NFL Total Access" on Tuesday night. "I think, without struggle, there's no progress, and I think he's been through that part throughout the first two years of his career.

"I think Geno just has to stay the course," Michael Vick said of Geno Smith. Al Bello/Getty Images
"I watched him mature a lot down the stretch throughout the course of the year last year, and he started to get it," Vick continued. "I think some guys, it takes longer than others. I think going into Year 3, Geno can go in with some confidence, feeling good about the way he finished up last year and have an opportunity to go out there and show his teammates and show the Jets nation that he has it, he has what it takes and they're waiting to see it.”

Vick is right about one thing: Smith finished on an upbeat note.

Consider: In Weeks 1 to 12, Smith compiled a 27.6 QBR -- 31st in the NFL.

From Weeks 13 to 17, his QBR was 49.8 -- 19th over that span.

A 49.8 QBR is the definition of average, but, hey, it was an improvement, right? Smith showed resilience, rebounding from a three-game benching. Which brings us back to Vick.

If Vick had created any semblance of a spark during his three-game stint, it might have been enough to keep Smith on the bench for the remainder of the season. Maybe Vick wouldn't be unemployed right now. Maybe Smith wouldn't be going to training camp as the first-team quarterback. Maybe Rex Ryan still would be ...

Oh, never mind. Let's not go that far.

So either we need a Cinderella season where everything comes up roses, or we need a QB who can withstand adversity and come out standing on the other side . . .

We have to see if it clicks between the ears with Geno in year three. He has playmakers and vocal teammates in that huddle to steer him in the right direction. Lets face it ], the guy was raw out of West Virginia. He had no business staring week one in the NFL in '13. The game was too fast and he needed to sit on the bench until the middle of last year. Yet, when he was RUSHED, we get fans such as "me", proclaiming the guy is a bust because we as fans have absolutely no patience with young QB's.

Yes, you are 100% correct that the guy has shown to crumble when things don't go his way, but let's analyze his surrounding his first two years:

*Coming from a Collegiate spread offense he's forced to learn the West coast offense and start day one. Steve Young once stated it was easier studying for law school than learning Bill Walsh's play book.

*Geno had no receivers year one. He had a head case with Holmes. The wide outs never got separation from DB's. You had Mr. dropsies in a one dimension Stephen Hill.

*Geno Year two Rex demonstrated that any player including the QB can lead by disgust. Missing team meetings. Flipping his own fans the bird. Chaos was permissible without any discipline. Turn overs were allowed without any confrontation. Hell with this environment, Geno's life was easy.

This is where I honestly feel Geno will make a strong push to show case his maturation in year 3:

*Going from the west coast to a familiar system in which he flourished in college may come second nature to him.

*Geno has legit threats if he fails early in Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is familiar with the system and will practice his ass off to dethrone Geno from the Starting QB position. Not to mention, Geno's potential replacement is on the bench in Bryce Petty.

*Geno will have every chance to succeed as he has amazing talent at his disposal.

*The most important above all is that he has a coach that will change his environment to possibly take the next step. Todd Bowles has learned from the best of Head Coaches. He's been around subpar QB's & HOF QB's that have won superbowls.

It's time to see if he truly gets it. He has everything around him to become the QB that may surprise every one.
If not, then Mac & Co. will move on to the next QB of the future.

From NFL.com. I am skeptical, but hoping they are right about Geno in 2015:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...no-19-jets-qb-geno-smith?campaign=Twitter_atn

For the third straight year, the Around The NFL crew will document the players we believe will be "Making the Leap" in 2015. This could be a player emerging from no-name status to a quality starter. Or it could mean an excellent player jumping to superstar status.

Geno Smith showed more last December than Derek Carr or Blake Bortles showed all season. He torched the Dolphins in a nearly flawless Week 17 game, but nobody noticed because the Jets' season was over in November. Nobody noticed because 'Geno' is already a four-letter word in New York.

There are different types of Making the Leap candidates. There are diamonds in the rough like Charles Johnson. There are guys like Le'Veon Bell last year, a great young player that we believed could develop into a true superstar. And there are guys like Geno, just trying to improve to 'acceptable'.

Though he is only 24, it feels like the book has already been written on Smith because of his propensity for big mistakes under pressure. But after being viewed as a punchline for two seasons, Geno is now in a perfect position to develop into a midlevel starter who survives a full 16-game slate. After a brutal start to his career, that would be quite a leap.

What changed in December

Geno's lowest moment as a pro was the last memory most folks have of him. In an ugly Week 13 loss to Miami on Monday Night Football, Rex Ryan was so afraid of letting Smith actually play quarterback that the Jets only attempted 13 passes compared to 49 rushes. Rex told a national audience that he'd rather set offensive progress back 40 years than allow Smith to do his job.

And then suddenly Geno started to do his job quite well. In the last four games, Smith completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,001 yards, six touchdowns, and two picks. He averaged 9.2 yards-per-attempt over that stretch, tied for best in the league. By the time the Jets played Miami again in Week 17, Geno was virtually flawless:

I re-watched each Smith snap on the coaches film from Game Rewind to see how he pulled off this turnaround. Here are my biggest takeaways:

1. Geno excelled over the final month because of his decision-making. His biggest issue as a pro has been panicking when under duress and throwing passes up for grabs. He's prone to the brain freeze. In the final month, Smith calmly found the open receiver. When no one was open, he made plays with his legs or got rid of the ball.

2. One huge reason that Smith made good decisions: He had time. The Jets protected Smith very well over the final month, which allowed him to show off his strengths. Smith has a strong arm and methodically goes through his reads better than plenty of his young contemporaries. A big question: If protection isn't so ideal in 2015, can he still excel?

3. Geno got me fired up enough to write this because he owns skills that are difficult to teach. He has excellent pocket movement, buying time to attempt passes. Some quarterbacks never get that sixth sense in the pocket; Geno has it. He is not afraid to make difficult throws, aggressively pushing the ball down the field. He looks off defenders. The play below is an example of him stepping up in the pocket and taking a hit before delivering:

4. The Jets didn't ask Smith to do too much. He ran the offense and didn't take too many chances.

5. In Weeks 14-16, Smith played solid midlevel starter football. He mostly stayed out of the way. But in the season finale, Smith put together one of the best games by any quarterback all season, throwing for 358 yards on only 25 attempts. He threw receivers open and even his incompletions were on point. The game showed off his big arm and his touch.

The Gailey effect

December was fun and all, but Smith wouldn't make our list if not for the arrival of Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. In previous stops, Gailey has turned Tyler Thigpen into a starting fantasy option, helped Ryan Fitzpatrick get a $60 million contract and coached a Jay Fiedler-led Dolphins team to finish eighth in points scored.

Gailey accomplished all of the above by getting mediocre quarterbacks to play smart and get rid of the ball quickly. Smith has plenty of talent, and he certainly has the supporting cast. The Jets receiver posse -- Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, second-round pick Devin Smith and tight end Jace Amaro -- form one of the deeper groups in the league.

Gailey has cooked up numbers with far less talent. His best offenses are similar to the one that Smith excelled in at West Virginia. It's almost like the Jets had a plan here.

Expectations

We aren't making the case that Geno Smith will be a Pro Bowler. We do believe he has the skills to be a competent starting quarterback that holds off backup Ryan Fitzpatrick all season. He can be the type of guy that finishes in the top 20 of our year-end QB rankings. Those guys have plenty of market value.

To put it another way: Geno, like Alex Smith in Kansas City, will no longer be the guy to hold the team back. The Genocoaster in 2015 should more closely resemble a Swiss train, staying efficiently on schedule.

It would be nice if this were true. However, it appears, like most such puff pieces, to be based primarily on game 16 in Miami, the meaningless game against a tanking opponent that did nothing but drop our draft position to 6.

In 2013, Smith had a similar terrific performance in the same last week in the same Miami in the same Tank Bowl...

That one got us to 8-8 and saved WRECKS for a year. And Geno used that one as a "springboard" to lead the Jets to 3 wins, a 0 QB rating in one game, pulled after 3 picks in the first quarter, missed meetings because of forgotten time zones and cursing out the home fans

Thankfully, MacBowles are not dumb and not tied to Geno. In fact, Maccagnan traded for his 2015 replacement in Fitzpatrick and drafted his 2016 and after replacement in Petty

He's the starter for "now"

The leash is rightfully short. For the first time in 6 years we have a viable alternative

If this article is not a fairy tale and our sows ear turns into a silk purse, I will be the first to say I was wrong about Smith and be out there rooting for him 100%

with a loud Go Geno Go Jets

Unlike "some at this board" I am able to admit when I am wrong

Was waiting to your response to this one, SG3. And for the record, I am much closer to you in my opinion of Geno than I am to the author of the article.

As far as Geno, since he wears a Jets uniform, I am rooting for him to play well, but I am firmly in the camp of I will believe it only if I see it. And one meaningless game at the end of the season is not enough to change my mind.

At this point no one is right or wrong, and we all want is the same thing - the Jets to be competitive for a championship. IF Geno turns out to be pretty good, look how good a situation this team is in. We have a cheap QB for another year or two, a reliable backup and A kid who can develop at a decent pace. I'm rooting for that to happen. Go Jets!

At the time that Idzik made the pick for Geno I was ecstatic simply because he was NOT Mark Sanchez. Now I will be ecstatic if Fitz starts only because he's NOT Geno.

You see what I am saying?

The Jets have not had even a whisper of good QB play in a very long time. Probably since Favre in 2008. It's time for the Jets once and for all to get a plan to develop a young QB into something franchise worthy. Furthermore, it's time for the Jets to figure a good, sustainable system under we can develop QB's into anything other than garbage. Because make no mistake about it, that's all that we've had for many years now.

I really have faith in Gailey being able to create a system our QBs can thrive in. He made Kordelle Stewart (spelling?) a pro bowler.

Has anyone noticed some analysts seem to be jumping on the Geno bandwagon??

Yup, saw this comment from Baldinger today:

Wish I had as much confidence, I would probably be thinking about selling short.

Yes you are right and should have fact checked before writing that.

Having said that, he was his pc his first year and built an offense around Stewart and he was pretty successful.

Geno is really impressing me lately. I am sure this is probably nonsense but on Instagram it's nothing but pics and videos of him working out.

All other jets players I follow are just pics of them hanging out, especially Pryor. He does nothing but drink and look drunk in his photos. Kind of worrisome.
