Didn't several experts call him the best pure passer in the draft? How bad an arm can he have?

Wait, wait, wait....I was wrong Geno would be the starter and you were right he'd be cut by this regime by September...
Sorry, as I explained to Ham, discussing ANYTHING with you is a waste of valuable time.

I think we're talking apples and oranges.

I think Petty has a pretty deep ball. I think he throws a very good deep pass.

However, he doesn't throw with much velocity. Think of it this way, Chad Pennington, Danny Weurffel, and McElroy threw the ball with more velocity when tested than Petty.

It's one thing to be able to drop the ball in the bucket 40 yards out, its another to get the ball down field with some zip behind it. He doesnt have the arm to stick throws, but throws a good deep ball.

That's what the scouting report and test at the combine measured. He had one of worst velocity behind his ball the combine has ever seen..

Look, he has the Gaily seal of approval so far, but it is another area to watch. Did you read 51's TOJ post? It had a good breakdown of him...but essentially tells jets fans, dont hold your breath....and I dont know a bigger homer site than TOJ...

His velocity is inconsistent. At the pro level with smaller passing windows it could be an issue.

Funny they compared him to Locker and Manuel, both guys I considered to have strong arms in college (especially EJ), but then discovered also they could throw the ball down field well, but didnt have zip on the down field passes. They struggled with the same thing at the combine...

Perhaps. But if he had consistently a fastball, he'd be bashed for having no touch.

And generally, I agree with TOTJ, but I'm not sold on this. It seems like everyone raved about arm strength.

Valid point. I know how a lack of velocity can be fatal against NFL secondaries.

So he has greater range with the long ball, but not much velocity. I'm not sure of the physics behind that, or how that happens, but I understand the general point.

Why haven't you ignored me? Im compelling. Admit it. If I wasn't, you wouldn't be glued to every post...and if you weren't glued to every post...why do you keep responding?

It's okay to admit. Hell, how could you not love me? if you didn't, you would have hit ignore by now.

Trust me, I see what's going on here. I have some ex-girlfriends that won't stop calling, emailing, hitting me up on facebook...behind my back they may talk like you do on this site..."he's good for nothing, so what he has a great job and makes lots of money, lives in a nice house with just him and his daughter...I don't still love him." But the texts and emails say something different...just like your obsessive need to keep responding.

It's okay. I know you love me. But I'm sorry, man. I just don't feel the same way.

Half the time, I think it's all bluster.

But half the time, I think 55 actually believes what he says about himself.

It will be cool to watch in the preseason.

This kid has so much going against him, yet to overcome what so many in the NFL havent been able to, and if Gaily gets the kid to look as good as Ham and Dan thinks he will be, put that man (Gaily) in the HOF.

I really cant wait to see what Gaily has in mind with him. The kid has some tools and a high IQ. I really look forward to watching his development. Even with everything negative, he'll be more fun to watch in the preseason than Simms, Brunell, and McElroy.

I do want to see how Gaily and team works him into our offense.

He is stepping into almost an ideal situation. An upgrade at OL would make it ideal, but with the ground game and the defense, and an OC who is versatile in making it work with all sorts of QBs, he will have nobody to blame but himself, assuming he is allowed to grow and not rushed into the starting role.

As long as im not like that joke AJ McCaron. Ill never forget the day before the draft when he said he was going between 20-32 in the draft...after not participating in the senior bowl or throwing at the combine because he was "a lock top 10 pick."

I pick my name drops carefully. ;)

I will go out on a limb and say I have a gut feeling Petty eventually becomes a stater for us and that he does well enough to keep us at the top of the division. I have nothing to back it up other than my gut and don't know how long it takes to happen.

I can understand the argument that Petty has A LOT to learn, totally valid argument, but for TOTJ to suggest he's not a plus thrower of the football, I won't even waste my time reading the column. Thats absurd. Even Jon Gruden marveled at his arm talent when they did their film session.

Ham, I hope you are right about Petty. He needs work and looks willing to put that work in. For the sake of all Jets fans lets just hope he is "the one".

I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen not bc I've seen him play and consider myself a talent evaluator but bc of where he was picked. Seems like he had flaws. If he was that good he would have been taken earlier in my opinion. Of course players fall through the cracks all the time but those are rare.

Hahahahahahaha

yes, because his arm strength was measured by a machine at the combine...the same machine the combine has used for over 10 years...

...but me, the machine, and the combine, and the scouts that evaluate the arm strength at the combine...all wrong.

But you're right because of youtube videos. Good point.
Its not just youtube videos, I watch college football religiously and I've watched Baylor close to ten times over the past two years. I've seen more of Petty than Winston or Mariota and I saw an awful lot of those guys too. I don't know who measured what or how you measure arm strength, I go by what I see, and I guarantee you nobody will be questioning Petty's arm strength once they see him in a few preseason games, not if the coaching staff lets him air it out. Lastly, I do trust my eyes when it comes to arm strength, I've seen enough football to know the difference between a strong arm and a weak one. I know what a spiral looks like and I know what it looks like when someone can spin it with velocity. To compare Petty to guys like Danny Wuerful is laughable. I won't say Petty has a cannon, that would be a stretch, but his arm is about the same as Geno's and both guys can make every throw in the book, including the toughest throw of them all, the 15 to 20 Yard Out, thats the real test and I guarantee you Petty will have no problem zipping the out.
