O'FALLON, Mo. • New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson was charged Thursday with resisting arrest and various traffic violations in connection with an apparent high-speed road race on Highway 40 (Interstate 64) on July 14, authorities said.

St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohmar said Richardson, 24, a St. Louis native and former University of Missouri star, was driving a 2014 Bentley Silver Spur that was clocked by police as going as fast as 143 mph.

He said as officers attempted to stop Richardson's car and the other vehicle along the highway, Richardson increased his speed, drove off the highway, and sped through a traffic light to try to get away.

Officers ended up arresting him when he pulled into the driveway of a home in a nearby neighborhood. Lohmar said Richardson then complied with the officers' demand to get out of the vehicle.

Two other men and a 12-year-old child also were in Richardson's car; they were not charged.

Richardson already was in trouble with the NFL before this incident. The league announced July 2 that he had been suspended without pay for the first four games of the upcoming regular season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Lohmar said resisting arrest is a misdemeanor which carries a potential penalty of up to a year in jail and or a $1,000 fine.

Court records said Richardson also is charged with exceeding the speed limit, following too closely, failing to use lights and failing to obey a traffic signal.

Court records listed Richardson's address as in the 200 block of Fairway Green in O'Fallon.

Authorities did not say whether the other driver in the apparent road race was arrested.

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – A former standout on the Mizzou football team and NFL first-round draft pick is facing charges of resisting arrest and other traffic violations for allegedly street racing on Interstate 64.

Less than two weeks after being suspended by the NFL after testing positive for marijuana, New York Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson was arrested in St. Charles County on July 14.

The St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said officers with the O’Fallon Police Department noticed two vehicles in what appeared to be a road race on westbound I-64. The vehicles were clocked on radar three times at speeds of 122, 135, and 143 miles per hour.

Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, at which time the driver of a 2014 Bentley Silver Spur increased continued speeding to avoid citation. The driver got off the interstate, sped through a red traffic signal, and turned off its vehicle lights.

The driver then turned into the driveway of a home in a nearby neighborhood to avoid detection, but police noticed the brake lights and pulled in behind the car.

Officers identified Richardson, an O’Fallon native, as the driver. Two other men and a 12-year-old child were also in the car.

A fully loaded handgun was found beneath the driver’s seat. Everyone in the car also smelled of marijuana.

The passengers were not charged with any crimes.

Richardson, the 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year, was selected sixth overall by the Jets in the NFL Draft. He will have to appear in St. Charles County Circuit Court in late October for his arraignment.

Hoping there are other inaccuracies in the story other than this one.

The Jets may not have to worry about this guy's contract, at the rate he's going he'll be out of football before his contract is due. I wonder how many more games he'll miss because of this

Jets' Sheldon Richardson says he's 'not a dope fiend'

July 30, 2015 5:49 PM
By LAURA ALBANESE laura.albanese@newsday.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Sheldon Richardson can say no to drugs, and he fully plans to.

"I'm not a dope fiend," the Jets defensive end said Thursday about his four-game suspension for marijuana use. "I can say no. I just chose not to. I was in a depressing time in my offseason and that's just it. It's just that simple. There's money on the line and my money is worth more than some weed."

The NFL announced Richardson's suspension earlier this month. At the first day of training camp practice on Thursday, Richardson worked with the second team, while the first team spot was given to rookie Leonard Williams. He said he never considered appealing the decision.

"There was no reason to appeal it," Richardson said. "I take full accountability for my actions. ... I apologized to my teammates and my organization and I told them they don't have to worry about my name being in the news again."

He said he especially regretted how his decisions affected his family.

Richardson said he was "a little disappointed and embarrassed, for my parents' sake. When an NFL player messes up, the whole world knows about it. The family goes through a lot. People at work don't know how to talk to them anymore. Little things like that that get to them."

THATS IT, I'm now officially considering this idiot a lost cause, our version of Josh Gordon and Justin Blackmon, which is to say, I'm not even thinking about this guy having an extended career with the Jets, too me its entirely possible he never plays another game for the Jets because he's obviously a moron in full self-destruct mode, so I'm treating it like he's off the team and he's not coming back ... and if he does come back, plays well, and keep his nose clean, I'll consider it a pleasant surprise and a welcome addition, but I'm not counting on it and IMO Bowles shouldn't be counting on it either, he should get Leonard Williams ready and act like Sheldon Richardson no longer exists.

Seems like he also had a gun in the car

Don't think we have to worry about him getting suspended. Considering the speed 143 MPH, he had a 12 YO in the car, ran from the police, and he had a gun.

This boy belongs in jail

He had a 12 year old kid in the car!?

Going 143 miles an hour!?

I'm surprised there aren't more charges against him.

There's a good chance we won't see him again this year, and at this rate he may never take another snap for the Jets.

I'm being dead serious when I say he's dead too me as a player. I don't anticipate him ever playing for the Jets again. If it happens, it happens, but its not something I expect, mentally I'm moving on without him, like he no longer exists, not like a savior I'm waiting for to come in and save the day, and IMO the team needs to approach it the same way, they need to act like we've seen the last of Sheldon Richardson, and if by some miracle he stays out of trouble and plays for the Jets again, at that point we can view it like a new addition.

Not to mention, this was done way after his announcement so it appears he hasn't learned from his prior mistake. His talk with the media that flgreen posted is a load of bull.

What a complete moron. I chose to defend this idiot on him smoking weed as i have my reasons, but there is absolute no defending this asinine act.

If the guy gets another chance this year to play, ya trade his ass and get a 3rd for him if that. IMHO, the guy being this dumb belongs off the field, off the streets and in jail. He's bound to do something else.

Fellas, this is where Todd Bowles may well place his stamp on how his locker room will be handled. This isn't Rex's free all be all mind set. This team is in the process of veering away from that way of football life. The Jets should discipline his ass as well.

I'am done with this brainless waste of a talent. TRADE THE FAT F^%!
