Smith's comment about the day of the punch. "I don't regret anything. I don't think I did anything wrong. You can't go back in time."
The correct answer is, " I am not proud of my behavior, but I don't think I did anything that deserved a physical response."
The gaps in the this guy's character get more apparent every time he opens his mouth.

This guy is such a petulant child. Again, IK should be the Jets mvp.

Geno is a f*cking punk. I kind of figured it before this incident. But the incident itself, just confirmed everyone's suspicions.

I hope the Jets cut this A$$hole once and for all at the end of the season. If his behavior wasn't bad enough, his play will give the CS all the reason they need.

Geno Smith was, is, and always will be, a punk. Saw it on draft day, and he hasn't done a thing to make me think any different.

...But I believe he will never see the field as a NY Jet again anyway unless something happens to Fitz.

This wasn't meant to be a trash Geno thread. Just an observation.
I believe people can change, under the right conditions

Not trashing Geno....... but I think his days here are over. We can play this year and next with Fitz.... then let Petty take over. I wouldn't be surprised to see Geno traded (Texans maybe) before the season is out......

But the better question is.......

Do you believe GENO can change and become a better person???? For me the answer is NO. If he hadn't learned a higher sense of responsibility over the last two seasons, he never will.

Good conditions or no, some people are genuine A$$holes. They're greedy. They're cheap. They're belligerent. They're irresponsible. Those are just a few adjectives to describe Geno Smith.

So the fact is, Geno IS in good conditions and he has CHOSEN to be a piece of sh*t. That's on him. It closely resembles the kind of person Ryan Leaf turned out to be.

i believe (some) people can change under the right conditions as well..

apparently the busted jaw that cost smith his job as the jets starting QB was not enough for him..

i hope the dope never takes another meaningful snap for our team ever again..

The clincher for me is that he has had plenty of time since the incident to read articles about how someone who is a leader should have reacted and then what he should have said in his first interview after the incident. The fact that he still says stuff like this shows me he has no willingness to learn from his mistakes. And that is a fatal flaw for any person, muchless a supposed leader of a team.

Great point! If Geno was going to "learn a higher sense of responsibility in the last 2 seasons" it would be with Rex Ryan as hes coach.

to a large degree this is not smith's fault, IMHO..

he's absolutely physically gifted enough to be a legit NFL starting QB..

his issues are a complete lack of character & leadership skills..

*sigh* i believe him when he says he doesn't think he did anything wrong as far as getting dropped by IK..

Geno has his issues, but so far it doesn't include marijuana or domestic violence, drunk driving, illegitimate kids or things like that...and these comments he made won't prevent the Jets from making him the backup when he's ready to go.

I think we can all agree that the character of a QB is a key element to the success of the player. Physical ability and a high football IQ is a given.
What qualities in a QB's character are beneficial:
  • Overconfidence
  • Good communication skills
  • An ability to thrive under pressure
  • An ability to make other players think that he will make them better
  • Modesty about his individual achievements
  • Lead by example on and off the field
Have I missed anything?
When I look at the list, it looks like the beginning of a list for good parenting skills.

The fact he hasn't progressed as a QB and the fact that a QB has to have maturity as well as leadership skills to be effective in the NFL and Geno has neither is why he may not come back as the backup... Petty can probably play up to, and in my opinion, even above Genos capability right now.. Along with showing maturity and leadership that Geno still cannot demonstrate adds to why Geno maybe the #3 guy when he comes back... I think Geno comes back as the backup only because this Front office is smart.... Play Fitz and if he stays healthy no worries cut Geno at the end of the year.... If he gets hurt Geno has the shortest leash and no backlash if the Jets go to Petty cause Geno plays as I would expect he would. And if by some reason Genos light turns on and he plays well, great.... Every scenario is a win win... Cause if Petty winds up the starter Mid-season than he gets the game experience he will need.

Has anyone else noticed that in terms of character and physical ability, Fitz and Geno are polar opposites.

I do believe this will be Geno's last in NY, but that he will be the backup when he is healthy. He lacks maturity and leadership skill but so far he hasn't shown himself to be a pot head, or a guy who drinks and gets behind the wheel, or a guy that hits women or other stuff that many players have shown themselves to be...like Shelson Richardson, and others around the league.
I also think he is younger than Petty even after 2 years in the league...he has time to turn it around, probably won't be with the Jets.

His lack of common sense is shocking and only exceeded by his immaturity and his ego... Try to rehabilitate him and then trade him at the end of the season if that is even possible.
