2015 Jets can make the playoffs if the QB doesn't blow it

I know this sounds crazy coming off a 4-12 disaster, but this team was not bereft of talent in the first place, only in certain areas while other areas were strong, and we've really gotten a lot stronger in those areas that needed to be strengthened, to the point where what were weaknesses a year ago can now be classified as strengths, and we still have the #6 and #37 Picks to add an impact player and a significant contributor, and later some more quality depth.

For example, last year were were terrific against the run. Our problem was that we had no pass defense. Now our secondary, at least on paper, looks every bit as good as our front seven, and the front seven might get a whole lot better too if we were to snag an elite edge rusher with that 6th overall pick. We also have a HC who is noted for his exotic blitz packages, schemes and coverages, who might be even more aggressive and creative than Rex Ryan who was also noted for his creativity and aggression. So we could (should) be looking at a defense that challenges for the #1 ranking.

Offensively we added a legit BIG #1 WR, which allows Decker to operate as a #2 , a roll he really excelled at in Denver. Make no mistake about it, while Decker was miscast as a #1 , he's about as good a #2 as you can hope for now that we have an authentic #1 . That alone takes the skill positions to a whole nother level. Add in Amaro coming into his second year, so hopefully his game takes a big step forward, and maybe we add another RB in the draft, and the offense should be a lot better provided the QB doesn't blow it.

And then there is the most important factor of them all, a schedule so soft (on paper) that its hard to find more than six losses even if you're a pessimist. I mean look at this thing, I know the game is not played on paper, but right now thats all we have, and you'll have a much harder time finding seven losses from this schedule, taking our improvements into account, than you will finding ten wins.

For arguments sake lets say we split with the division home and away, that makes us 3-3 in the division which is not at all unrealistic or even overly optimistic.

That leaves 10 Games, five home and five away, from which we need to win at least seven to give ourselves a really good chance at making the playoffs.

That said, I think we'll be favored in every one of these home games, so its fair to say they are games we're supposed to win. I understand how the NFL works, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, there's no William & Mary's to beat up on in this league, but they are five home games we should win. Losing any one of these games at home would be pathetic in my view. We are significantly better than all five of these teams and we're home in all five of these games, so I have us running the table.

HOME

Jaguars
Titans
Browns
Eagles
Redskins

That takes us to 8-3 with five road games to play, and all we need is two wins out of these five to give ourselves a real good chance at securing a wild card. More than two and we are making a run at the division title, but more than likely all we need is two to make the playoffs.

AWAY

Texans
Colts
Raiders
Cowboys
Giants

There's no reason why we shouldn't dismantle Oakland, so thats one.

That leaves the Texans, Colts, Cowboys and Giants.

Of those four, only the Colts and Cowboys were playoff teams last year, and IMO both are flawed teams we can beat. We're probably underdogs in both games, but I view both as winnable games if we play up to our talent level, and again, if the QB doesn't stink. So in fairness I think you can figure a split in those two games, and that takes us to ten.

Now we're looking at the Giants and Texans, two teams who are not as good as Dallas and Indy, but good enough where they will probably be slight favorites at home, about a FG favorite just for the HF advantage. I think its fair to predict a split in these two games as well, and that would take us to 11 Wins, which is a lock to make the playoffs and a possible run at the division title if the Pats come back to the pack due to their significant losses in free agency.

Lastly, even if you want to project us slipping up in one of those five home games we should win, as the Jets inevitably do in at least one home game they should win in their sleep, this still gives us a one game margin for error with that home loss taking us back to 10, which again should be enough to make the playoffs.

Now if you accuse me of being too optimistic, thats fine, I ask only that you explain how, exactly where and how am I being overly optimistic here? Which analysis or prognostication would you call outlandish in the homeristic sense?

As with rexs first year, you can turn a team around in a year in today's nfl. Our defense can neutralize even the best qb's, something we lost with revis leaving and Cromartie getting hurt and leaving.
That leaves us with a simple question, can our qb not suck, just enough, for us to win?

Depends on how fast we can dump Smith.

Haha I am laughing cause you start with a comment that this might sound crazy... But seriously there isn't an NFL Coach, GM, Expert out there right now thinking if the Jets get avg QB play they are a playoff team, Above Avg they can do serious damage a Great QB Super Bowl Contender.. An Elite QB possibly a favorite...

There isn't a position other than QB and maybe TE where we aren't solid to great right now...

WR - Great Marshall, Decker and Kerely make a great 3 any
OL- We have some issues there but thanks to Mangold still playing Elite and Brick still above Avg and recent Acquisitions still an Avg group
RB - No Home Run threat but the Combo of Ivory and Powell care a good tandem
TE - Well Amaro has promise need him to step up this year

and the D

DL - Great nuff said
LB - Above avg and will perform better under Bowles (i.e you won't see them in Coverage)
CB - Great Nuff said
S - the acquisition of Gilchrist and the use of Pryor, along with the CB's taking the pressure off the S. thiswill be the 2nd biggest upgrade on our D because of Bowles Scheme...

If this team doesn't win 10 Games it'll be for one of 2 reasons. Maybe both..
1 the QB play was below average or
2 Bowles isn't the coach we thing and hope he will be...

I expect neither.. I think Qb play will be avg at bare minimum
and Bowles and his staff will be very good.

I'm all for optimism, but there's a few over-the-top characterizations here I have to take issue with...

There isn't a position other than QB and maybe TE where we aren't solid to great right now...

WR - Great Marshall, Decker and Kerely make a great 3 any maybe very good...not great. Kerely is okay but really just a step above JAG although he may do better with more talent around him. Draft could change this though.
OL- We have some issues there but thanks to Mangold still playing Elite and Brick still above Avg and recent Acquisitions still an Avg groupno...this is where we are suspect. this OL is average on its best day but barring injuries, might maintain average
RB - No Home Run threat but the Combo of Ivory and Powell care a good tandem
TE - Well Amaro has promise need him to step up this year

and the D

DL - Great nuff said
LB - Above avg and will perform better under Bowles (i.e you won't see them in Coverage)I have no idea what you see to call this above avg. I think it's below avg. Not necessary to be great for the defense to be successful but there is no scary talent in this unit whatsoever. On another team they could be a glaring weakness but between this DL and secondary, they'll be okay.
CB - Great Nuff said

I have been thinking that where there is such a thin line between the good and bad teams, we could easily make the playoffs. Then I think about specifically this Jets team and see a team that already does some good things. They have the makings of a great defense, they just did not have corners that could cover. Revis and Cro guarantee that will be turned around. So I believe this defense can easily be top 10 in the league.

We can also run the ball rather well. Chris Ivory is definitely a guy this team can lean on this season.

However, this is all predicated on the QB not f*cking us. We could make the playoffs if only our QB did nothing to hurt this team. That's not saying he did anything to help us win. Just that he protected the ball. Geno does not know the first thing about it.

So if we continue to do the things we did well in the past, our QB starts to play much smarter, then I still think we needs a few more items in the draft:

1) FB - I want to add to an already good running game. The last time we made the playoffs we had a great FB and I believe that would pave the way for our QB to play mistake free football.

2) LB - We are still missing that linebacker that can rush the QB.

3) OL - We may have blocked well in the running game but our pass blocking was something entirely different.

If we hit on all of those things, and it will not be easy, but if we do hit on this, the Jets are most certainly a playoff team.

I have not written off the playoffs. Teams can turn things around quickly and I like what we have done so far.

Well according to most on this site, if Geno is our QB then we will only win 3 games max. If its anyone else then I guess we are SB contenders. SMH!

Real answer, if this team can gel together correctly, quickly and stay healthy, they can definitely be a playoff team. Biggest concern is the QB ofcourse. Unless we draft Winston, Geno will most likely be the starter. Mariota may be able to beat him out. Otherwise, unless there's a dark horse rookie that isn't projected a first or second round pick then we may be stuck with Geno. So hopefully he steps up this year and we have a shot. Notice I didn't add Fitz in there because I don't see him winning the starting job.

Yup and well become a dynasty and win 5 SBs with Fitzbustard.
I give up.

Your love affair with the worst QB in the NFL two years running has blinded you to any possibility of intelligent discussion.

I couldn't agree more. With Fitz as a Starter, he can be serviceable to lead this talented team back to the playoffs. With Va'Geno, the season as we've witnessed these past two seasons will be mediocre at best. Any where from 4-12 to 8-8, no better than that.

Have we gotten better? Definitely.

Have two other teams in our division gotten better? I don't see how we could deny it.

Like it or not, we were bottom feeders last year. We needed to get better just to catch up to them, so if they also improved there's a good chance we're still behind.

To me it all comes down to coaching. If we can get a leg up there it will make a WORLD of difference in the outcome of the season.

If we can't, then we'll likely improve in record, but not in standing . . .

Dude, I thought we were ending this unintelligent conversation? What's your point, your not going to convince me of your argument and I'm not going to convince you of mine so let's just dead this conversation. Its pointless really. Let's just agree to disagree and move the f$ck on!

He insists on having the last word so he can appear as the winner. I'd suggest you let him have one more "intelligent" response so we can all rest. He had one thread locked yesterday, this nearly made it two. I see a pattern of behavior and will again alert the mods to watching posters like this. I'm sure he'll complain about that too.
