Jets rookie defensive end Leonard Williams found his first NFL game to be exhausting.

Williams said his biggest issue against the Browns on Sunday was his conditioning.

“I don’t feel like I played to my best abilities to be honest,” Williams said. “I think part of it is just conditioning. I feel like in college we did a lot of conditioning. It’s kind of like up to myself now to take care of that on my own like after practice.”

Jets coach Todd Bowles said Williams likely felt tired because he was too amped up for his debut.

“I thought he got winded because I thought emotionally he was too high,” Bowles said. “You come out and you’ve got spit on the side of your mouth and you’re slobbering and you’re in warm-up in pregame. That is typical to happen to a rookie the first time out. They come out hyperventilating.”

Williams said that may have played a role in it, as well as not playing a full game in the preseason.

“They had a few long drives,” Williams said. “I just noticed I was getting pretty tired on those drives. I was coming out of my stance slow and kind of raising up and not staying low. It was just from being tired.”

I thought he played well. Would love to see some pass rush from him but that will hopefully come with time.

What Bowles said sounds like he's rationalizing it, but it actually makes sense.

When I was young I did some boxing and I'll never forget the first time I sparred in the gym, lots of nervous energy and excitement. By the middle of the second round I hit a wall and I was spent, totally exhausted, which was a scary feeling because the other guy is trying to hurt you and you feel defenseless, but at the same time you have too much pride to quit.

I remember feeling helpless and just hoping the round would end, then I could say I'm out of gas, but I couldn't quit in the middle of the round like a dog.

When the round ended I turned to the trainer and told him I'm spent, totally out of gas, and it ended. But I was really confused because its not like I just walked in off the street and said I wanna box. I trained for over a month before I sparred that day and I was running up to five miles at that point, without feeling tired, I knew I had endurance and stamina, so I couldn't understand how I completely ran out of gas like that in the middle of the second round, it didn't make any sense, so I asked the trainer about it, told him I'd been working hard and was running five miles with ease, and you know what he told me, exactly what Bowles said about Leonard Williams, he told me I was too amped up, too excited, and you can't box that way, it will sap you of all of your energy, its counterintuitive, but you have to calm yourself down before you get into the ring, take some deep breathes and make a conscious effort to stay relaxed, its the only way to maintain your stamina.

The next time I sparred, which was only a few days later, I took that trainers advice, made a conscious effort to stay calm and was so much more relaxed when I got into the ring, and that time I went three full rounds without feeling exhausted, able to function and compete for all three rounds, so I know there's a lot of truth to what Bowles said here.

The adrenalin reason makes a lot of sense, but I like what I hear from Williams. I thought he played pretty well considering the Browns OL is very strong, but he's not satisfied with just playing well. I think he is going to be very impactful for us, particularly against the likes of Brady and other less than mobile QBs who hate the inside pressure.

Great Point, I love that he's not satisfied to just be okay. He wants to be a difference maker, an impact player. I love that thats what he demands of himself. I wish Quinton Coples had some of that attitude.

Agreed, i was keying on Coples on a a lot of plays and what i really don't see is any desire. It looks like he is just going through the motions. The only play of note is his fumble recovery.

Which was really just "right place right time" after Reilly stripped the ball (another guy who won't settle for less than his best).

I'm not down on Coples the way some here are, but you gotta wonder if/when the intensity of his teammates will ever rub off on him . . .

If Coples doesn't have a good year, he's probably toast. No excuses this year.

And that would open the door for Reilly, who I really like. Guy busts his ass out there. He earned that roster spot.

I thought he played great. So if he was tired, I can't imagine the animal when he's not tired?

Yeah, he's definitely very good thus far. But as Elias already mentioned, and I agree, would really love to see pass rush from him. I am sure he has the ability. Could be that he didn't generate much in the browns game because the Browns have such a good OL.

He's very impressive thus far, but the Jets need to see more out of him and that would be pass rush.
