Jets star DL Muhammad Wilkerson is not reporting for start of the team's offseason work today. Might not be around for a while. Stay tuned

Didn't want to see this. Wilkerson has been more then patient waiting for his payday. Now he's sitting there watching them hand out all this big money.

Show the team that excellence is rewarded within. Get it done Macc

There is an existing Wilkerson thread, just fyi.

There is already an existing thread since November on almost everything Jets' related. His taking a stance and not showing up for OTA's is turning the heat way up.

IMO it is thread worthy.

I think a deal will get done after the draft. I'm not concerned just yet. Sucks that he's not here getting to know his new coach. As long as it doesn't effect him later on this season where he's out of shape and leads to an injury.

No more Mr. Nice Guy.

For the first time since his contract became an issue a year ago, Muhammad Wilkerson is putting himself ahead of the team by deciding to skip the start of the New York Jets' offseason program. He has every right to feel this way. It's a miniprotest, a justifiable message to the Jets' front office that he's not happy with the glacial pace of his contract negotiations.

Wilkerson was a good soldier last season, saying he considered it unbecoming of a team leader to stage a contract holdout. He showed up and played for a below-market salary ($1.2 million), never whining about how he wanted a new contract. He showed his commitment to the organization in December when he returned from a painful turf toe injury with only two games remaining in a lost season. It would've been easy to shut it down, especially with his contract situation, but he insisted it's not in his DNA to sit out.

So now he's entering the final year of his contract, wondering when (if?) he will get a long-term extension. Wilkerson watched last year as other defensive linemen in his draft class, J.J. Watt and Robert Quinn, landed big-time deals with their respective teams. Former general manager John Idzik, who guarded Woody Johnson's money like a sentry at the U.S. Mint, never showed urgency to get a deal done.

New GM Mike Maccagnan, the beneficiary of Idzik's frugal approach, has no choice but to spend money, per the league's minimum-spending requirement -- and he's throwing around some serious cash. The Jets have doled out about $90 million in guaranteed money, including an obscene $39 million to Darrelle Revis. So Wilkerson, loyal Jet, is wondering, "What about me?" They still have $12 million in cap room, including Wilkerson's $6.969 million salary. In other words, there's enough space to make Wilkerson happy.

Maccagnan said as recently as last week that Wilkerson is a valued member of the team and that he intends to focus on the contract after the draft. He's right; the priority should be the draft. When it's over, the Jets will have nearly three months to negotiate before training camp.

So Wilkerson's no-show isn't cause for panic. It's important to remember these workouts are voluntary, so he can't be fined by the team. The first mandatory team activity is June 9, the second minicamp.

Take a deep breath, folks; this isn't Revis-ugly, circa 2010. But at the same time, it's a fairly loud statement, one of the best players on the team deciding to skip the start of the new coach's offseason program. Wilkerson's absence is the first blemish for Todd Bowles. Welcome to the big office, Coach.

Chances are Wilkerson will get a new deal by the start of the regular season, assuming both sides are willing and fair. Maccagnan doesn't have much of a track record, but he certainly comes across as a GM who wants to keep the fan base happy -- and the fans want to see Wilkerson in green for a long time. He's one of the top 3-4 defensive ends in the league, a vital piece in the team's future. He deserves to be one of the highest-paid defensive linemen in the league, probably just south of Watt ($16.7 million per year) and Quinn ($14.2 million).

The worst-case scenario? Wilkerson plays out the final year and gets slapped with a franchise tag next year. Actually, the absolute worst-case scenario is everything falls apart and the Jets put him on the trading block, traveling the Revis road once again.

That's a long way from happening. It's only April 6, and Wilkerson isn't missing anything of significance. But Big Mo, a man of few words, is saying plenty with his absence.

That's cool. I'm just used to the Scout forums where common thread titles were merged to avoid such a large amount of threads that we have to sort through. But your point is understood. It's a new chapter to the Wilkerson situation.

We agree. I'm not crazy about posters who start a new thread every time they have a new thought. As you said it's a new chapter, and one I didn't expect

Got to say I agree with Cimini. I sure hope this gets resolved quickly, I really like MO and don't want this to move on to the franchise tag. Don't agree that his salary should be just below Watt's. Hope his agent doesn't have him thinking that way

JMO even though it is thread worthy there will still be a lot of duplication on this one point in both threads

Let's just hope Macc handles this correctly so it doesn't leave a bitter taste in our players mouths.

I think Macc will do all that he can do and that is over Wilkerson the best contract the team can afford which I am sure will be a fair offer. Then the ball is Wilks court just how high does he value himself?

I said, before we traded Revis, that you don't let your elite players go. Mo will never be on the level of Revis, but he is still a player we need to sign

The past Revis situation and the Wilkerson situation, are entirely different. Revis was unwilling to fulfill contracts he agreed to once he had the guaranteed money. I had no problem when the Jets traded him. As a businessman I know not fulfilling a contract doesn't fly in the real world.

Wilkerson has sat quietly. Now the Jets are handing out over a hundred million dollars to the likes of Revis (who I am glad is back) and still nothing. Yes there are priorities, and Wilkerson is one of them

And also in the real world, you're not risking permanent brain and body damage for the rest of your being. Players have the right to make every cent they can, for the short amount of time they have to play. Just like billionaire owners can cut them, any second they feel like. So if you're dealing in a cut throat business, you take the same approach.

All the Jets accomplished by not retaining Revis was losing the best player they ever drafted, and winning the Pats a Super Bowl

Jets still being punished for Idzik's failures as a GM.

This one I'll agree with you on. A lot of the other things Idzik gets singled out for involve needing a cohesive relationship with his HC(a Hc he never got to choose). This is on Idzik. He should've gotten this done last year. No excuses. Having said that, right now, it's only strength and conditioning with no actual football activities. Mo can do this with his own trainer. He most likely will miss the April voluntary mini camp before the draft(which will stink), but I think this will be resolved before the mandatory mini camp in June. I can't compare this to Revis, because he and his reps chose to make things acrimonious with the team including faking a hamstring injury during mini camp. Mo's just taking the advice of his agent, and I think this will be resolved by Macc post draft.

I think Mac is doing the right thing. He needs to be 100% focused on the draft. The next couple weeks he will be fielding calls for "if this guy land at 6, would you take.... So we could move up." Most trade scenarios with franchises are done well before draft day, they just may change their mind as scenarios in front of then unfold.

Mac needs to concentrate on the draft then focus on Wilk.

Last year, Idzik should have done the same thing after the draft. He had all offseason then all season to work with his agent to get the deal done; according to Wilk, those talks never happened.

Idzik handled his own players the same way he handled free agents, disrespectfully. Idzik didn't even join free agent visits (even Decker he only joined for dinner). So glad he's gone.

Idzik should’ve extended Wilkerson last summer. Instead, he let the Watt and Suh deals happen first and reset the market. #Jets

Corey Griffin @CoreyGriffinNBC · Apr 6

Jets will likely end up paying Wilkerson $2 million more per year than they would’ve if they did a deal before those contracts.

Corey Griffin @CoreyGriffinNBC · Apr 6

Still, I’d be stunned if a deal weren’t done by camp. Wilkerson will miss a couple workouts and Jets will start talks after draft.

Corey Griffin @CoreyGriffinNBC · Apr 6

Timing of this report is no coincidence. Wilkerson’s agent knows GM is locked into draft and talks will come after. It’s no-lose PR ploy.
