Report: Randall Cobb expecting more than Packers offer of $8-9 million a year

The Packers opted not to use the franchise or transition tag on wide receiver Randall Cobb earlier this week, a decision that pushed Cobb closer to the open market.

It also appears to have pushed him closer to the exit. Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers have told Cobb’s agent Jimmy Sexton that they are willing to give Cobb a five-year contract worth between $8 and $9 million a season, which is less than Sexton believes Cobb will receive on the open market.

Cobb had exactly the year you’d want to have with free agency in the future as he played in every game for the first time in his career while setting personal bests for catches, receiving yards and touchdowns. McGinn believes that Cobb could top the $9.763 million per year that Jordy Nelson is set to make under the terms of the extension he signed last year and the presence of teams like the Raiders and Jaguars with big money to spend makes that seem like a real possibility.

The Packers drafted three wide receivers last year and they’ve replaced key offensive contributors without missing too many beats in the past, so there’s not much reason to think that they’re going to get into a bidding war for Cobb’s services. Right now, that gives the strong impression that Cobb will be in a different uniform pretty soon.

Tyvon Branch beginning his free agent tour with Colts

It’s almost like the Colts want to do the Bob Sanders thing again.

According to Conor Orr of NFL.com, the Colts are bringing former Raiders safety Tyvon Branch in for a free agent visit.

When he’s well, Branch is a very good safety, the kind of guy who would represent an upgrade over their last free agent safety by (the just-cut LaRon Landry).

Only, it’s hard to count on Branch being well, after he’s played just five games the last two seasons. A broken leg and a broken foot might not be connected, and might not be a sign of future events.

But still, it’s hard to gauge what his market will be, and how any team is willing to invest in a guy with so little tape the last two years.

Andre Johnson asks Texans to release him

The Texans recently gave receiver Andre Johnson permission to seek a trade. Johnson won’t be doing that.

Johnson’s agent, Kennard McGuire, tells PFT that he has asked the Texans to release Johnson.

The impasse arose when the Texans recently informed Johnson he’d have a reduced role in 2015. Johnson responded by saying that he won’t be happy with a reduced role, so it would be better for him to be elsewhere.

The Texans responded by granting him permission to seek a trade. McGuire believes deliberately leaked to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle the notion that Johnson asked for a trade in an effort to minimize local criticism of the franchise for its treatment of a player who has been with the Texans for all but one year of the team’s existence.

“After 12 years of being a model citizen, an ambassador, and the face of this franchise, he deserves more than a mishandled P.R. campaign that showcases only one side of the story,” McGuire told PFT on Wednesday morning. “After 12 years, he deserves to be sent off in a better way.”

Indeed he does. The Texans know that no one will pay $11.5 million to a receiver who’ll turn 34 in July. At most, a trade would have happened with Johnson doing a new deal. So instead of doing a new deal elsewhere as part of a trade, he should have been cut and given the chance to do that new deal elsewhere.

The ball is now back in the team’s court. The only right thing to do at this point is to thank Johnson for his 12 years of loyal service and release him, giving him a six-day head start on the unrestricted free agency market.

Eagles may have interest in Mark Ingram

So who will the Eagles turn to at running back after they’ve traded away LeSean McCoy? One option could be soon-to-be free agent Mark Ingram.

Ingram, who becomes a free agent when his rookie contract with the Saints expires on Tuesday, appears to be on the Eagles’ radar. Lyons Yellin of WWL-TV has heard rumblings about the Eagles being interested in Ingram, whose straight-ahead running style may be more to Chip Kelly’s liking.

If the Eagles were to sign Ingram, it would be the second straight season that they took a running back from New Orleans. Last year they acquired Darren Sproles in a trade with the Saints.

The Saints, however, don’t want Ingram to go, and coach Sean Payton has identified Ingram as a player he’d like to keep. That’s easier said that done because the Saints simply don’t have much cap space, and the Eagles have a lot of cap space. If it’s a matter of money, the Eagles can pay Ingram a lot more than the Saints can.

Ingram is the No. 3 running back and No. 38 player overall in our list of the Top 100 free agents.

Randall Cobb - WR - Packers
A league source told Packer Report's Bill Huber the Raiders are considering offering free agent Randall Cobb "a blockbuster deal."
The same source said Jacksonville is "prepared to make a run" at Cobb. The source claims Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie -- an ex-Packers personnel man -- is willing to offer Cobb $11 million annually, a price Green Bay GM Ted Thompson almost certainly wouldn't match. Cobb would replace James Jones as the Raiders' slot receiver. His fantasy outlook would take a huge blow in Oakland.

Haloti Ngata - DL - Ravens
ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley predicts Baltimore will release LE Haloti Ngata.
GM Ozzie Newsome has been trying to work on a new deal for Ngata in order to lower his $16 million cap hit, but nothing has materialized to this point. Ngata is refusing to kick money down the road after he had a strong season. The 31-year-old would be highly sought after if he hit the open market. Hensley mentions the Colts as a possible landing spot, reuniting Ngata with coach Chuck Pagano.

Greg Hardy - DL - Panthers
ESPN Bengals reporter Coley Harvey predicts Cincinnati will sign free agent DE Greg Hardy.
This isn't the first time we've seen Hardy linked to the Bengals. The fit makes sense. The Bengals are in dire need of some pass-rush juice up front opposite LE Carlos Dunlap, and Hardy's price will likely be low after his off-field issues this past season. Cincinnati has never shied away from players with character concerns. From 2012-2013, Hardy registered 26 sacks and played elite run defense.

Jared Odrick - DL - Dolphins
ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker believes Miami will let free agent DT Jared Odrick walk.
This doesn't come as a huge surprise. The two sides haven't engaged in contract talks, and the Dolphins seem poised to make a serious run at free agent Ndamukong Suh. Odrick will still have a healthy market after Suh and Terrance Knighton sign their deals. Odrick could command north of $6 million annually as a scheme-versatile lineman who can play 4-3 defensive tackle or 3-4 end.

Cary Williams - DB - Free Agent
Free agent CB Cary Williams is drawing "heavy interest," according to his agent.
Take this with a grain of salt, of course, but Williams' agent says a dozen teams have contacted him since Williams was released by the Eagles on Tuesday. Williams was mostly a disaster during his time with Philadelphia, but he finished last season strong. A weak cornerback market should also benefit him. Titans beat writer Jim Wyatt reports Tennessee has "kicked the tires" on Williams.

Mark Ingram - RB - Saints
Lyons Yellin of WWL-TV in Louisiana has "heard rumblings" the Eagles have interest in free agent Mark Ingram.
Whereas Shady McCoy was an at-times improvisational east-west back, Ingram is a north-south runner whose addition in Philadelphia would constitute a changing of the guard. There were rumblings late in the year that coach Chip Kelly was displeased with McCoy's tendency to freelance in his running game, which also led to Bryce Brown's ouster last offseason. A more assignment-sound runner than McCoy, Ingram's fantasy stock would skyrocket in Philly.

Andre Johnson - WR - Texans
ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley considers Baltimore a potential landing spot for Andre Johnson.
Hensley notes GM Ozzie Newsome's history of success with "old" wide receivers -- Derrick Mason, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Smith Sr. -- as well as the need if free agent Torrey Smith walks. The Ravens are an annual playoff team, which will appeal to Johnson as his career winds down. Baltimore is currently strapped for cap space, but could make cuts and restructure deals to create room. Hensley sees Johnson as an "ideal fit" in new OC Marc Trestman's offense.

Jay Cutler - QB - Bears
ESPN Bears reporter Michael C. Wright reports $10 million of Jay Cutler's 2016 base salary becomes guaranteed if he's on the Bears' roster next Tuesday.
As Wright puts it, the Bears would be committing to Cutler, not only for 2015, but also for 2016 if they decide to keep him. To this point, neither coach John Fox nor GM Ryan Pace has come out and publicly backed Cutler as the team's quarterback. All the two have said is that they planned to sit down with Cutler in the coming weeks. The Bears really don't have any better options than Cutler.

Ryan Mathews - RB - Chargers
XTRA 910 Arizona's Mike Jurecki reports the Cardinals are in the market for a "big" running back.
We chose to do this blurb under Ryan Mathews because he qualifies as a "big back" at 6'0/220 and hasn't been the topic of many rumors thus far this offseason. The free-agent market starts with DeMarco Murray, whom the Cardinals have been linked to, and is followed up by Mark Ingram and Mathews. The latter two make the most sense for Arizona. They'd be able to handle early-down and goal-line duties, allowing Andre Ellington to remain in a third-down pass-game role.

Not too bad. He's no Ed Reed and I prefer Jarrett to Pugh based on potential but I wouldn't be completely against him...as a backup.

prob just bodies bowles knows how the injury bug hits from last year in arizona plus he blitzes alot so the more players he can rotate the better, so unlike in rex's case where the defense would be tired towards the end esp in the 4th quarter.

This hurts. If Cobb is really expecting that much I don't think the Jets should pay him like that. Dex or Demarious of course, even Maclin I would say yes but Cobb or T.Smith I don't know. Definitely not Harvin!
